Origin

Tea is an aromatic beverage commonly prepared by pouring hot or boiling water over cured leaves of the Camellia sinensis

Tea originated in China as a medicinal drink about 4750 years ago during Tsen dynasty in form of Green Tea

Cantonese/Mandarin – Portuguese – Cha

Ming/Fujian – Dutch – Te/Tea

The Britons started to serve tea as a drink of status on and from 1650

Black tea :90 °C (194 °F)2-3 Minutes

Green tea : 80 to 85 °C (176 to 185 °F)

1-2 Minutes

Flowering tea : 100 °C (212 °F)

4-5 Minutes

Premium or delicate tea : (100 °C or 212 °F) +/- 5 Minutes

Plantation

Temperature: 21°C to 29°C is ideal for the production of tea. High temperature is required in summer. The lowest temperature for the growth of tea is 16°C.Rainfall: 150-250 cm of rainfall is required for tea cultivation.Soil: Tea shrubs require fertile mountain soil mixed with lime and iron. The soil should be rich in humus.Land: Tea cultivation needs well drained land. Stagnation of water is not good for tea plants. Heavy rainfall but no stagnancy of water, such mountain slopes are good for tea cultivation.

Tea Gardens & Workers

• 12 day basis where daily wage is Rs.90.50/- irrespective of gender. • The rate of school drop-out is high due to poverty.• The medical facilities are also not satisfactory. • land holdings is very small. • They use firewood for cooking at the cost of environmental degradation.• They enjoy PDS facilities from both Tea Planter and Government side but have to compromise the quality of the food items and subjective only to Permanent labors for himself/herself only. • They do not have proper sanitation facility and water supply facility.• They live in an unhygienic environment without basic amenities.
