Canadian winters can be bitterly cold, so warm-ing up your car is essen-tial. Depending on where you live, 60 seconds might be all the time you need. According to Natural Resources Canada (NRCan), warming up your car for more than 60 sec-onds can be an expensive, ineffi cient and a harmful

waste of fuel. In cold weather, use a

block heater on a timer for two hours and then start driving easy and let the car warm up on the road. Letting your car idle in the driveway for more than 60 seconds, either by a remote starter or starting it yourself, wastes fuel and does not adequately warm up all your

vehicle components such as the transmission, tires or the catalytic converter. Driving your car “smooth and easy” is the best way to warm up your vehicle’s components. Of course make sure your windows are clear before you drive away.

If drivers avoided idling by just three minutes a day over the year, Canadians

would collectively save 630 million litres of fuel, and $630 million in fuel costs (assuming a fuel cost of $1.00/L).

Hybrid vehicles com-bine the internal combus-tion engine and fuel tank of a conventional vehicle with an electric motor powered by a battery. The combination gives motor-ists the driving range and convenient refuelling capabilities of a conven-tional vehicle, with more environmental benefi ts.

Hybrids achieve improvements in fuel effi ciency by using the electric motor to supple-ment engine power. Many hybrids can even oper-ate at low speeds using only the electric motor. Their batteries never need

to be plugged in and are recharged by a combina-tion of the engine and by recaptur-ing energy nor-mally lost when braking. Fuel consumption and emissions can be reduced by up to 50 per cent compared to a similar gasoline vehicle.

Many hybrids are most effec-tive in city driv-ing conditions because this is when the battery power is called

on to do some or all of the work. For instance, when

a hybrid vehicle is stopped or waiting at an intersec-

tion, the gasoline engine is usually turned off to elimi-

nate wasting fuel from idling. So if most of your driving is around the city, your fuel consumpt ion and costs with a hybrid could be a fraction of what you are now paying.

Many auto m a n u f a c t u r -ers in North America now offer hybrid m o d e l s . Furthermore,

as the market expands, the cost differential between hybrids and conventional vehicles is declining.

(NC)—If you’re plan-ning a road trip this holi-day season, try to avoid the temptation of speed-ing to get you there faster. Experts have proven that driving over the speed limit, even by as little as 10 to 20 kilometres an hour, is like throwing money out the window and results in minimal time saved.

According to Natural Resources Canada (NRCan), a 100-kilometre trip will take you 60 minutes at 100 km/hr and 50 minutes at 120 km/hr.

If the average fuel con-sumption of a vehicle in Canada is 10.6 litres/100 km - at $1.00/litre it costs $10.60 to travel 100 kilome-tres. Increasing your speed

to 120 km/hr will use 12.72 litres/100 km or $12.72 to travel 100 kilometres.

That’s like throwing a Toonie out the window every 100 kilometres or every hour! If your trip takes you 10 hours each way, there’s $40 you could be spending on something else.
