With the increase competition in the workplace, the need to be explicit
in how we communicate with others superiors, colleagues,
subordinates and even external parties customers, suppliers etc
becomes very important. To be explicit in communication entails that
we take into consideration some factors in constructing our messages.
No matter the field of knowledge or profession you belong to, your
ability to communicate in the workplace is the most important factor
that makes you promotable. !ccording to the Harvard Business
Review, your ability to communicate is more important than ambition,education, and capacity for hard work. Thus, even when you are the
most read "in terms of educational #ualification$ in the world, or the
amount of hard word you put into the organisation is more than any
other person%s and very ambitious& without your ability to communicate
to'with others, your chances of being promoted is ()*+ limited.
Workplace communication is a shorthand term used to refer to all
forms of speaking, listening, relating, writing and responding in the
workplace "oodall and oodall, -/$. Workplace communication is
also another term for business communication. The actual work thattakes in the workplace amounts to nothing if no one knows about what
happens there. 0nowing what is happening there can only be possible
through communication with colleagues and the external world.
1owever, our concern in this programme does not include
communication with the outside party. We share dwell sorely on the
aspect of communication that is within the organisation. 2n

workplace, it carries with it some added advantages. These advantages

through speaking or writing. 2t is an important form of communication
in the workplace. 2n the course of the day%s work, an average worker
spends time interacting with colleagues, superiors and subordinates. No
matter the level or sector in the workplace, you have to verbally
communicate one way or the other3 either to re#uest for or defend
something apply for leave, re#uest for stationery, answer #ueries,
report a fault etc. (erbal communication entails putting your thoughts
into words through speaking and writing. 2n the course of expressing
your thoughts verbally, you may choose to say it or write it. 2n saying
or writing, you have to take into consideration the appropriateness of
the words you want to use to your audience and the context of the
communication. This is where the issue of formalityand informality
comes in.
