FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE February 24, 2010

INTERVIEWS: DEAN DEBNAM 888-621-6988 / 919-880-4888 (serious mediainquiries only please, other questions can be directed to Tom Jensen)

QUESTIONS ABOUT THE POLL: TOM JENSEN 919-744-6312

    Denish favored for Governor

Raleigh, N.C. Lieutenant Governor Diane Denish starts out favored to keep the NewMexico Governors office in Democratic hands, although it looks like it could be a closerace between her and Pete Domenici Jr.

Denish leads the son of the states long time Senator 45-40. She holds much widermargins against the rest of the Republican field- 48-30 over Allen Weh, 47-33 overJanice Arnold-Jones, and 46-32 against Susana Martinez and Doug Turner.

Denishs advantage comes in spite of significantly reduced popularity for Governor BillRichardson. Only 28% of voters in the state approve of the job hes doing with 63%disapproving. His 22% approval with independents and 7% with Republicans is notunusual for a Democratic official these days, but hes even in negative territory within hisown party at a 42/47 spread.

Denish is easily the best known of the Gubernatorial candidates with 75% of votersholding an opinion about her. They break down positively by a 41/34 margin. Aplurality of voters has no opinion about each of the Republicans. Domenici is viewedfavorably by 27%, followed by 17% for Martinez, 12% for Weh and Turner, and 8% forArnold-Jones.

Although Barack Obamas approval has slipped into negative territory at 45/48, both of the states Democratic Senators have solid 48/36 approval spreads.

Given Obama and Richardsons low levels of popularity Diane Denish is doing prettywell, said Dean Debnam, President of Public Policy Polling. But a contest withDomenici certainly looks like it could be competitive.

PPP surveyed 990 New Mexico voters from February 18 th to 20th. The surveys marginof error is +/-3.1%. Other factors, such as refusal to be interviewed and weighting, mayintroduce additional error that is more difficult to quantify.

Complete results are attached and can be found at www.publicpolicypolling.com.
