POLI/USP, GM, EDS, Sun Microsystems UGS Start New Partnership for Engineering Advancement

Partners for the Advancement of Collaborative Engineering Educaton

As the only institution in South America to take part in the Partners for the Advancement of Collaborative Engineering Education (PACE) Program, POLI/USP received worksta-tions and software to be used by engineering students to improve their CAD/CAM/CAE skills. Together with GM, the program is maintained by EDS, Sun Microsystems and UGS among others and has already invested more that US $3.3 billion in 32 universities in six countries during the last six years.

$514 Million PACE Contribution Provides Comprehensive Design Tools

São Paulo, Barzil ~ The Polytechnic School of the University of São Paulo (POLI/USP) is the latest institution – and the only one in South America – to be invited to join the Partners for the Advancement of Collabora-tive Engineering Education (PACE) program .The head of POLI/USP, Prof. Vahan Agopyan, remarks that the program brings the University closer to the most advanced technology available on the market.“Students will have access to tools and engineering resources that are currently used by car manufacturers with little or no cost to the institution”, said Prof. Agopyan. He emphasizes there is a reason to be proud since Brazil, through POLI/USP, was chosen by GM to be the fi rst country in S. America to be a PACE institution.

Largest initial contribution in PACE history and largest in-kind contribution in school history

Troy, NY – Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute recently announced an in-kind contribution commercially valued at $513,949,200 from the Part-ners for the Advancement of Collaborative Engineering Education (PACE). Rensselaer has been a pioneer in the use of computer-aided design, with programs that employ CAD/CAM across the spectrum of academic activities, from science and engineering to game design

and cognitive research. The comprehensive modeling and simula-tion tools from PACE will allow Rensselaer students to work with the latest software used by major corporations, enhancing their ability to design projects ranging from more effi cient factories and hybrid ve-hicles to the fl ow of blood through artifi cial heart valves. These tools offer exciting opportunities for Rensselaer students to collaborate on design projects at the intersection of multiple technology-based fi elds. At a celebration on the Rensselaer campus, Larry Burns, vice president, research & development and strategic planning for General Motors, announced that the commercial value of the PACE contribution to Rensselaer was the largest in-kind contribution in the school’s history.“As educators we must prepare students for the global economy. This visionary partnership combines the innovative curriculum at Rensselaer with the tools and talents of the PACE partners to create an even more technology-rich, multidisciplinary learning environ-ment for our students,” said RPI President, Dr. Shirley Ann Jackson.

The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) sponsors a Human Powered Vehicle (HPV) Competition each year in hopes of fi nd-ing an alternative method of transportation that people can use for everyday activities such as commuting to and from work or going to the

grocery store.Senior engineering students at universities and colleges across the country spend a year designing and building lightweight, aerodynamic vehicles that are put through their paces each spring in ASME’s offi cial competitions. For Widener University’s fi rst year in the HPV competition, engineering students there opted to compete in the single rider vehicle class. After coming up with a preliminary design (similar to our cumbent-style bicycle but with three wheels) and modeling it, the-Widener students decided to use fi nite element analysis (FEA) to predict how well their design would perform during the competition.Design geometry was imported into Femap® software, the world’s leading Windows-na-tive pre- and post-processor for fi nite element analysis.“Femap is easy to use. I had learned it previously in about fi ve to six weeks at my co-op job,” explains Lee Zambino, the senior student on the team who performed the analyses.

He used the Femap meshing functionality to convert the surfaces of the CAD model to plate elements for the analysis. A structural analysis of the frame, using NX™ Nastran software as the solver, simulated several worst-case loading scenarios.

Mesa, AZ. – General Motors (GM), UGS and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) are lead sponsors for the Challenge X: Crossover to Sustainable Mobility engineering competition. The OSU team fi elded one of only six functioning hybrid vehicles at the competition, and was recognized for various accomplishments, including:Outreach: 3rd placeTechnical report: 2nd place Trailer tow: 1st place The team received many compliments for the design and fi t and fi nish of the vehicle. The OSU team was the only team to have pre-served all of the cargo and passenger space in the vehicle, in spite of extensive modifi cations. The OSU team used NX extensively for packaging analysis as well as fi nite element analysis on the vehicle.

UGS is proud to sponsor three teams in the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition. This event joins engineers from sponsor companies with local schools to design and build a robot to compete in a high-adrenalin contest fi elding 2000 teams worldwide. The competition incorporates the excitement of a sporting event to introduce high school students to engineering. Team 158, UGS and Live Oaks Career Development Campus, in Milford OH just celebrated ten continuous years in the FIRST competition. UGS also supports award-winning Team 469 at the International Academy in Bloomfi eld Hills, MI and Team 1985 with Hazelwood Central High School in Florissant, MO.

Global opportunities inProduct LifecycleManagement (GO PLM)The UGS GO PLM™ Program was developedto address the essential business issues ourcustomers face, including the shrinking supplyof skilled employees as well as the gapbetween current worker skills and the levelof performance required in today’s globalmanufacturing market. The GO PLM initiativecovers five key education and communitydevelopment programs:Academic Partnership,Youth Development, Regional Productivity,Community Relations and PACE (Partners for the Advancement of CollaborativeEngineering Education). UGS views this effortas so important that we committed softwareand services with a commercial value of morethan $2B in 2005.

Developing a workforce experienced in bothinnovative thinking and efficient productionpractices is critical. Moreover, training in PLMtechnologies and processes can deliver theresults that concern manufactures mosttoday. UGS is proud of its industry leadershipin this area.Today we serve more than 8,400GO PLM Partners worldwide that collectivelytrain 860,000 students on UGS PLM softwareeach year. GO PLM is a sure sign anorganization is on the road to innovation. We encourage you to explore the ways GO PLM might benefit you.
