The Road to Loan Collection

4

Rhea Lewis, Past President

First of all, many of you may have heard about the Professional Photographer’s Association (PPA) “Loan Collection”, but don’t really know much about it. Before last year, I was in the same category. I knew that this was a prestigious honor and that it represented the best

of the best photographers in the world. I looked at it as a beautiful book for inspiration by the best photographers in our industry today. To be honest, I had never seen one in person. I had heard it mentioned in certain circles and that Marathon press produced this beautiful book every year. I certainly didn’t know anything about what it took to get published in it. Let’s just say it was a real learning experience all the way around. Like most of my fellow members, my experience with image competition has been mostly at the Guild level and maybe at FPP a few times. I used this info to help hone my skills and improve my work for my clients. However when I won Best of Show at the

last Guild competition, one of the judges suggested that I take my images to District competition and that it had the potential to “Loan”. To be honest, I had no idea how or what that really meant or what I needed to do next, but I was up for the challenge. So I set out to unravel the “Loan” mystery. I must say, that it indeed was a mystery. Unfortunately there is no road map that I could easily follow. The first thing I realized was that if I waited to go to the state level competition at FPP(Florida Professional Photographers), I would miss the District (SEPPA - Southern Professionals Photographer’s Association) and International (IPC – PPA’s International Photographic Competition) deadlines. So I needed to go straight to Districts, SEPPA . I found out that I was automatically a member of SEPPA since I was a member of FPP. This was a nice surprise, since I knew that you needed to be a member of the organization to enter their competition. Which I figured would be another expense, but it wasn’t so that was good news. I also found out that SEPPA has it’s own convention in Atlanta Georgia. Not that I was considering going, but I now knew it existed, and maybe in the future it will be something I would attend. Then I found out that if your images “seal” at SEPPA (receiving a score of 80 or better – like a merit) when you enter them in PPA’s International Print Competition (IPC) you receive 1 PPA merit towards a PPA Photographic degree. However, I also learned that you can submit whatever images you want to IPC, you don’t have to go through Districts if you don’t want to. But I figured I should find out if they were worthy before I go to IPC. The other cool thing about Districts was that they offered judges critiques in a little video where you could listen to their comments and learn how you can improve your images. This was invaluable to me since I used this info to tweak my “sealed” images before I submitted them to PPA’s International Competition. When I submitted my images to IPC, I again asked to receive the judging critiques so that I could learn from what they had to say too. Thesw videos were also very helpful to me in educating me abut what the judges look for in an image; what they like and what they don’t like. So you can submit up to 4 images to IPC. Two of mine merited; one made it to General Collection (merit) at IPC and one image was accepted into the “Loan” collection. Holly molly, I did it! This was a true honor and confirmation that all of my hard work was starting to pay off in the eyes of my peers at the highest standards. As a self-taught photographer who came into this field as a second career, it was a very proud feeling. It was also very humbling and surreal to achieve this status on my first try. Just to give you an idea over 5000

5

images are submitted to IPC, 1800 are selected for General Collection (merited) and just 682 were selected for the Loan Collection (about 7 percent). What a journey, I learned so much along the way, not only about how to improve my images, but how the process works. I also familiarized myself with PPA’s degree programs since now I have some merits towards these degrees. I am now highly motivated to achieve these goals as well. Competing with your images takes a concerted effort, and it is not inexpensive. However, the payoff is that you become a much more seasoned and well-rounded photographer. You will be much more critical of your work, and the level of you work will improve dramatically. Competing also allows you to see what the entire world is doing and be inspired to continue to create beautiful imagery, and have your work stand-out amongst the constant barrage of newbie photographers.

Photography as an Antidepressant

6

It is easy for me to wake each morning with a smile and be full of energy. To see the good in life and the beauty in the hectic world that surrounds us. When I am stuck in traffic, I tell myself to take advantage of the downtime, turn off the radio, and have a conversation with my children (or with myself ). These things are all easy for me. But that is not the case for others.

I know some people that struggle on a daily basis with the simplest joys. Smiling can be so hard to do that they walk about all day with a serious stare and their heads hung low as if there is nothing to be seen and no need for interaction. They don’t reply when you pass them at the 7-11 and say “good morning”. Instead they change the direction of their gaze and speed up their pace.

I often wondered why they would allow themselves to be stuck in such a sad state. And then, one day, I figured it out. It’s really quite simple. They hate their lives. They hate their jobs, their spouse, their car, their mattress, the shoes on their feet, the coffee in their mug, the sound of the blinker when they are changing lanes on the interstate. There is very little that surrounds them that they do not hate.

The good news is that the solution is just as simple. I challenge each of you to find the joys in your lives. Eliminate the negative things and people that are keeping you down. Focus, instead, on the positive things and people that surround you. Then, pick up your camera and REALLY focus on them. Take photographs on a daily basis of the things that make you happy. The things that put a smile on your face. Whether it is a tinny flower that is beginning to sprout in your garden or your child’s paint filled fingers. Our days really are filled with wonderful and extraordinary things if we can just slow our minds long enough to see them. And if we can dig up the energy to photograph them as further proof that they exist, we will then have tangible evidence that there are things worth rejoicing over. Next, I want you to edit those photos with all love in your heart and post them on Facebook, Twitter, & Instagram for the world to see.

When you photograph beautiful things, edit them with love, and post those images along with positive comments about your clients and your work, you will inevitably get new clients. Every emotion you put out, especially on social media, is a reflection of you, a reflection of your work, and a reflection of the experience your clients can expect to have if they hire you as their photographer. Make it a reflection that will attract the clients you are seeking!

12 Elements of a Merit Print

The Photographic Exhibitions Committee (PEC) of PPA uses the 12 elements below as the "gold standard" to define a merit image. PEC trains judges to be mindful of these elements when judging images to the PPA merit level and to be placed in the International Print Exhibit at the annual convention. The use of these 12 elements connects the modern practice of photography and its photographers to the historical practice of photography begun nearly two centuries ago.

Twelve elements have been defined as necessary for the success of an art piece or image. Any image, art piece or photograph will reveal some measure of all twelve elements, while a visually superior example will reveal obvious consideration of each one. They are:

1. IMPACT is the sense one gets upon viewing an image

for the first time. Compelling images evoke laughter, sadness, anger, pride, wonder or another intense emotion.

2. CREATIVITY is the external expression of the

imagination of the maker by using the medium to convey an idea, message or thought.

3. STYLE is defined in a number of ways as it applies

to a creative image. It might be defined by a specific genre or simply be recognizable as the characteristics of how a specific artist applies light to a subject. It can impact an image in a positive manner when the subject matter and the style are appropriate for each other, or it can have a negative effect when they are at odds.

4. COMPOSITION is important to the design of an

image, bringing all of the visual elements together in concert to express the purpose of the image. Proper composition holds the viewer in the image and prompts the viewer to look where the creator intends. Effective composition can be pleasing or disturbing, depending on the intent of the image maker.

5. PRINT PRESENTATION affects an image by giving it a

finished look. The mats and borders used should support and enhance the image, not distract from it.

6. CENTER OF INTEREST is the point or points on the

image where the maker wants the viewer to stop as they view the image. There can be primary and secondary centers of interest. Occasionally there will be no specific center of interest, when the entire scene collectively serves as the center of interest.

7. LIGHTING is the use and control of light- refers to how dimension, shape and roundness are defined in an image. Whether the light applied to an image is manmade or natural, proper use of it should enhance an image.

8. SUBJECT MATTER should always be appropriate to

the story being told in an image. 9. COLOR BALANCE supplies harmony to an image. An

image in which the tones work together, effectively supporting the image, can enhance its emotional appeal. Color balance is not always harmonious and can be used to evoke diverse feelings for effect.

10. TECHNICAL EXCELLENCE is the print quality of the

image itself as it is presented for viewing. Sharpness, exposure, printing, mounting and correct color all speak to the qualities of the physical print.

11. TECHNIQUE is the approach used to create the

image. Printing, lighting, posing, film choice, paper selection and more are part of the technique applied to an image.

12. STORYTELLING refers to the image's ability to

evoke imagination. One beautiful thing about art is that each viewer might collect his own message or read her own story in an image.

Photography as an AntidepressantMelissa Fuller, Secretary

Your camera is your baby. You make sure not to ding it, have a beautiful padded case to store it in and you wipe it down after a session on the beach to prolong the life of the camera. How about taking care of your body to make sure you have a long lasting career doing what you love most, photography?

We all, at some point, push ourselves and neglect certain signs our body tells us to take it easy or that something isn’t working right. I would like to focus on how to improve our health so that we can keep doing what we love most. All areas of the body are important to maintain proper function, the same as all the parts of our camera and its equipment.

Let’s start with the obvious……..THE EYES !!!!

Interesting Facts About The Eyes:

• You blink about 12 times every minute.

• The number one cause of blindness in adults is diabetes.

• The human eye can distinguish 500 shades of gray.

• The shark cornea has been used in eye surgery, since its cornea is similar to humans.

• It is impossible to keep your eyes open while sneezing.

Foods that help improve eye health: Kale, oranges, peanuts, kidney beans, salmon, whole grains, apricots, carrots, eggs and any type of berries.

Remember your mom telling you that reading in dim-light will hurt your eyes? Well, she was half right. While reading in dim light won’t ultimately damage your eyes, the straining might cause headaches. The same goes for sitting too close to the TV or computer monitor. Although, it is good to takes breaks occasionally if you plan on being in front of the computer for long periods of time.

Make sure to stay up to date on your routine eye exams. At any signs of blurred vision or flashes of light, you should see your doctor. If detected early enough, there may be ways to slow down, correct or even stop vision losses. Check your family history of any eye problems or hereditary issues. Also, those individuals that smoke or have nutritional deficiencies are at a greater risk for vision loss.
