Hall of famers can be human E ach year when the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame stages its induc- tion shindig, we rock fans get all giddy. We wonder what sort of musical magic will unfold as the honorees strap on guitars and honey- coat their vocal cords to per- form during the now-tradi- tional concert and jam. Like the time Axl Rose and Bruce Springsteen jammed on the Beatles’ ‘‘Come To- gether.’’ Like the time Tina Turner joined Mick Jagger to sing ‘‘Honky Tonk Women’’ when the Rolling Stones were in- ducted in 1989. Like the time the Beatles were inducted in 1988 and the jam on ‘‘I Saw Her Standing There’’ found the stage elbows-to-butt-cheeks with the likes of George Har- rison, Jagger, Springsteen, Jeff Beck, the Supremes’ Mary Wilson, a morose- looking Bob Dylan and a doz- en other rockers, both roy- alty (Brian Wilson) and court peons (Journey guitarist Neal Schon, Paul Shaffer). Like the time the Lovin’ Spoonful were inducted in 2000 .... Those moments and many more — except for the Spoonful gig — are captured on the just-released, nine- DVD box set ‘‘Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Live.’’ Along with 125 perform- ances spanning the 24-year history of the museum, the set also includes backstage footage and the induction speeches of stars lauding stars. But this monster box set ignores one of the most re- markable performances dur- ing the rock hall ceremonies. It was, Lovin’ Spoonful bassist Steve Boone told me during a phone interview in 2006, ‘‘a rather horrendous induction performance I’d like to forget about.’’ During rehearsals, when vocalist John Sebastian ‘‘got up to sing, you could hear a pin drop — or a jaw drop,’’ Boone said. Age had ravaged Sebastian’s voice. ‘‘It was obvious John couldn’t sing the leads,’’ Boone said. ‘‘The feeling in the room was like ‘Oh God, this is bad.’ You don’t want to be the jerk who makes waves and refuses to go up there.... It was one of the most embarrassing nights of my life in public perform- ance.’’ While that performance isn’t on the DVD, ironically there are plenty of moments when the cameras catch these musical gods and god- desses being all too human. Few of these stars appear confident addressing an audi- ence with a podium rather than a guitar in front of themselves. Aerosmith’s Joe Perry, inducting Led Zeppe- lin, comes across like a ner- vous third grader reading a class book report. Even more ironically, it’s the star-powered jams that make these rock gods seem human. Speaking at the induction of Cream in 1993, Eric Clap- ton said he was against the idea of a rock hall: ‘‘Until re- cently I didn’t believe in this institution.... It seemed to me that rock ’n’ roll should never be respectable.’’ Then Clapton noted he was reuniting with ‘‘two people I love very dearly (his Cream mates Jack Bruce and Gin- ger Baker). Yesterday we played together for the first time in 25 years.’’ And, as the trio performed ‘‘Sunshine of Your Love,’’ they looked like giddy school kids who were making noise in their first garage band. That same carefree glee — of discovering (or rediscover- ing) that youthful, even inno- cent rock ’n’ roll fire that first ensnared these artists 30, 40 or 50 years ago — plays across the faces of these aging music titans again and again. And we fans are grateful that these stars chose to em- brace Danny and the Ju- niors’ ‘‘Rock ’n’ roll is here to stay’’ mantra rather than the Who’s ‘‘Hope I die before I get old’’ credo. F anboy here for the latest in pop culture . . . is that a boy in a balloon? Yeah I know, I’m sick of hearing about it, too. But the fact is that little Falcon Heene and his kooky, hoax-producing parents have brought up an in- teresting question. We’ve long talked about the blurred line between news and entertain- ment but with the Heenes us- ing every major news organization as their own per- sonal publicists, has the line gone from blurred to simply nonexistent? The Larimer County Sher- iff’s Office in Colorado has al- ready announced that Richard and Mayumi Heene may be charged with ‘‘falsely reporting that their 6-year-old child had drifted away in a large home- built helium balloon to drum up publicity for a reality TV show.’’ Now Sheriff Jim Alderden says there might be a co-con- spirator in the charges, a me- dia outlet. Could it be that a network may have been in cahoots with these amateur storm chasers? According to Robert Thomas, who worked with Heene on several ideas, the couple appar- ently wanted to star in a show about the Heenes working on a range of weird experiments. And if it is found that a net- work helped pull off this hoax, are they more or less responsi- ble than the parents who were OK with teaching their kids to lie ‘‘for the show’’? PPP TV theme song composer Vic Mizzy has died at the age of 93 in his home in Bel Air, Calif. While you might not know the name, Mizzy was behind two of the most well-known theme songs of all time, ‘‘Green Acres’’ and ‘‘The Addams Family.’’ ‘‘I sat down; I went ‘buh-buh- buh-bump [snap-snap], buh- buh-buh-bump,’’ he recalled in a 2008 interview on CBS’ ‘‘Sunday Morning’’ show. ‘‘That’s why I’m living in Bel Air: Two finger snaps and you live in Bel Air.’’ PPP The next film in Ben Stiller’s ‘‘Meet the Fockers’’ series got a couple of new stars this week. Laura Dern and Jessica Alba will join the cast of the tenta- tively titled ‘‘Little Fockers.’’ Dern will play the headmistress of the elementary school that the Focker children attend. PPP ‘‘American Idol’’ contestants Adam Lambert and Allison Ira- heta have announced the titles and release dates for their debut albums. Lambert, last season’s run- ner-up, will release ‘‘For Your Entertainment’’ on Nov. 23. Ira- heta’s album drops Dec. 1 and will be called ‘‘Just Like You.’’ ‘‘Idol’’ winner Kris Allen’s al- bum comes out . . . who are we kidding? Does anyone care? (It’s Nov. 17.) PPP Jackie Haley, who made a name for himself as Rorschach in ‘‘Watchmen,’’ will play hor- ror icon Freddy Krueger in the ‘‘Nightmare on Elm Street’’ re- boot due out in April 2010. Now comes word that Haley will star in another geek classic: ‘‘Green Lantern.’’ According to various outlets, Haley is in talks to play the vil- lain Sinestro in the superhero film. This news was paired with a rumor that Superman, yes, the character, may appear in the film as well. PPP It seems like every week we’ve got some more cool ‘‘Glee’’ news. This week is no ex- ception. Some of you may know that Lea Michele, who stars as Ra- chel on the hit series, got her start on Broadway in the musi- cal ‘‘Spring Awakening.’’ Well now her Broadway co-star, Jon- athan Groff, will be joining the show for five or six episodes as the male lead of Vocal Adrena- line, the group’s show choir ri- vals. Groff’s character might also be a potential love interest for Michele’s Rachel. In other Gleek news, director and nerd icon Joss Whedon is confirmed to be guest directing an episode of the Fox series.
