I am officially admitting I am completely over ‘‘American Idol.’’ I’ve been watching reli- giously since season two and now in this ninth season, I be- lieve I’m ready to throw in the towel. Weird thing is, most of the people I know who watch are in the same boat. And that boat has jumped the shark. What’s wrong you ask? Ev- erything. Let’s start with the contestants. While I wasn’t a huge fan of Adam Lambert last season, every week brought a ‘‘what is he going to do now?’’ moment. This year, who is the go-to per- former week to week? Except for hippie chick Crystal Bo- wersox, there is no one I can think of. This year the cast is full of performers you could see at your local bar on any given Saturday night or the local theater production. I’m pretty sure I saw Casey James in Flagler Beach last weekend. And then you have the judges. First off, Randy Jackson has become the talking kewpie doll of broadcast television. Pull his string and he blurts out one of three different sayings: ‘‘That was hot,’’ ‘‘Yo’’ or ‘‘That wasn’t for me.’’ And all of these sayings end with the word ‘‘dawg.’’ Ellen DeGeneres has already worn out her welcome. There are only so many times I can hear someone use the word ‘‘adorable.’’ Obviously, she was brought on for her cute little jokes because it’s clear she knows nothing about music. And then there’s Kara DioGuardi, who I actually real- ly liked last season. This sea- son, from her catty moments with Katy Perry to her over- the-top tear fest after a Big Mike performance, she has proven to be a self-centered font of conflicting comments, telling contestants to take chances with songs and then shutting them down when they do so. With Simon Cowell, the only member of the panel who actu- ally makes accurate observa- tions, leaving after this season, these are the three we will be left with? I can’t think of a better time to abandon ship. C’mon, Sea- crest, there’s room for one more in this lifeboat. PPP According to the Los Angeles Times, Conan O’Brien is in talks with Fox to come back to late night television. Rumor is that key Fox execs, including Rupert Murdoch, are working with Coco and his peo- ple to finalize a deal before the network unveils its plans for the new fall lineup on May 17. Under the terms of the set- tlement O’Brien received when he left ‘‘The Tonight Show,’’ he is unable to launch a new show until September. PPP This week Animal Planet an- nounced that they are launch- ing a new series set to begin filiming this spring starring . . . Mike Tyson? And the show, currently titled ‘‘Taking on Tyson’’ is about . . . pigeon racing? This is why Tivo was invent- ed. PPP Good news, ‘‘True Blood’’ fans. HBO hooked us up with a sea- son three premiere date this week. Make sure you jot down June 13 at 9 p.m. in your plan- ners. And speaking of ‘‘True Blood,’’ Carrie Preston who plays Arlene on the show has signed on for a multi-episode arc on CBS’ ‘‘The Good Wife.’’ Could this mean the end for Arlene? PPP I usually don’t tackle celeb- rity gossip but we’ll make an ex- ception this week. According to the BBC, Kate Winslet and her director hus- band Sam Mendes have split up. Kate, if you need a shoulder to cry on, call me. [email protected] Accent writer Tom Iacuzio scours the pop culture uni- verse for the latest in enter- tainment news. Fanboy can be found online as Fanboy 2.0 at go386.com/fanboy T his mashup shtick has gotten out of hand. When all those B- team bluegrass dudes began churning out those ‘‘Pickin’ on the Beatles’’ and ‘‘Pickin’ on Zeppelin’’ albums years ago, it was cute (if not thrilling) to hear high lone- some versions of ‘‘Strawber- ry Fields Forever’’ and ‘‘Kashmir.’’ Those bluegrass guys weren’t the first. In 1978 a San Francisco rock band called Little Roger and the Goosebumps gleeful- ly merged the lyrics of the ‘‘Gilligan’s Island’’ theme with Led Zep’s ‘‘Stairway to Heaven,’’ creating the notori- ous, cheesy, cheeky ‘‘Stair- way to Gilligan’s Island.’’ (Zep’s management quickly trampled it underfoot, but you can find it on the Inter- net still.) In 1989 on the soundtrack for his movie ‘‘UHF,’’ Weird Al married Dire Straits’ ‘‘Money For Nothing’’ with the theme from ‘‘The Beverly Hillbillies.’’ The ‘‘mashup’’ concept hit its peak a half-decade ago, first in 2004 when Danger Mouse cleverly put a Vulcan mind-meld on the Beatles’ ‘‘White Album’’ and Jay-Z’s ‘‘The Black Album’’ and called it ‘‘The Grey Album.’’ The mashup went viral de- spite efforts to squash it by the Beatles’ record company, and the set appeared on the top 10 lists of numerous critics that year. A year later, Go Home Pro- ductions (the alter ego of English producer-deejay-re- mixer Mark Vidler) crafted ‘‘Rapture Riders,’’ an exhila- rating (and authorized) ma- shup between the Doors’ ‘‘Riders on the Storm’’ and Blondie’s ‘‘Rapture.’’ (Check out the worthy video ma- shup on YouTube.) It’s been downhill ever since. A Beatles/Wu-Tang Clan mashup, ‘‘Enter the Magical Mystery Chambers,’’ ap- peared a few months ago and just as suddenly disappeared from the Internet (given the tepid results, shout ‘‘Goo-goo- ga-joob’’ that it’s gone). And the band Beatallica, a Metallica-Beatles ‘‘bashup,’’ is currently touring behind their second and latest al- bum, ‘‘Masterful Mystery Tour.’’ (Are you beginning to notice a trend with these leech-the-Beatles projects?) Beatallica features the pre- dictable choking-Rottweiler vocals and Beavis-and-Butt- headian guitars as the lads cough up such fare as ‘‘The Battery of Jaymz and Yoko,’’ ‘‘Everybody’s Got a Ticket to Ride Except For Me and My Lightning,’’ ‘‘I Want to Choke Your Band’’ and ‘‘Fuel on the Hill’’ (the latter is available on YouTube, if you must). Now comes the band Rock Sugar with their debut CD, ‘‘Reimaginator,’’ which, ac- cording to the band’s PR, ‘‘combines the best-loved heavy metal riffs of the ’80s with the melodies of the world’s favorite ’80s pop clas- sics.’’ Thus Rock Sugar delivers such mashups as ‘‘Don’t Stop the Sandman’’ (Journey’s ‘‘Don’t Stop Believin’ ’’ mixed with Metallica’s ‘‘En- ter Sandman’’), ‘‘We Will Kickstart Your Rhapsody’’ (Motley Crue’s ‘‘Kickstart My Heart’’ merged with Queen’s ‘‘Bohemian Rhapso- dy’’ and ‘‘We Will Rock You’’), ‘‘Crazy Girl’’ (Ozzy Osbourne’s ‘‘Crazy Train’’ and Rick Springfield’s ‘‘Jes- sie’s Girl’’) and ‘‘Shook Me Like a Prayer’’ (AC/DC’s ‘‘You Shook Me All Night Long’’ chained to Madonna’s ‘‘Like a Prayer’’). Though Rock Sugar’s Web site wasn’t offering sound samples when I checked, there is evidence that the band is taking a refreshing, Spinal Tap-ish approach to the mashup game. Check out Rock Sugar’s tongue-in- cheeky bio at rocksugar- band.com . . . something about a hair metal band be- ing shipwrecked on an is- land in the 1980s with the record collection of a 13-year-old girl. But how long will it be be- fore some remixer does a mashup of Beatallica and Rock Sugar, or ‘‘Stairway to Gilligan’s Island’’ and ‘‘I Want to Choke Your Band’’? Somewhere John Lennon is crying — or maybe laugh- ing his arse off. Rick de Yampert is The Daytona Beach News-Jour- nal’s entertainment writer. He can be reached at rick.deyampert @news-jrnl.com Associated Press file Weird Al Yankovic, left, and Danger Mouse, above, are among those to create ‘‘mashups.’’ While Yankov- ic has worked this concept for comical effect, Danger Mouse melded The Beatles’ ‘‘White Album’’ with Jay-Z’s ‘‘The Black Album’’ to create the critically acclaimed ‘‘The Grey Album.’’ The Daytona Beach News-Journal Friday, March 19, 2010 3E GO 386: ENTERTAINMENT Hey ‘Idol,’ we’re through Tom Iacuzio FANBOY Robert Hughes CONTACT US Send GO 386 Calendar events to e-mail: accent@news- jrnl.com; fax: 386-258-8623; mail: Accent Dept., The Daytona Beach News-Journal, P.O.
