Legal Definitions in Scotland
Homicide: A term which refers to the act of one human killing another human. Homicide will not always result in a criminal conviction, a death can be caused with no intent or by accident but if there is criminal responsibility for the death then this can be seperated into murder and culpable homicide. Murder: Involves the physical act (actus reus) of killing deliberately by criminal intent or wicked recklessness, that is to act with such recklessness that the perpetrator will have been aware that it was likely that the victim would die through their actions. It is important that the recklessness is deemed "wicked", if not culpable homicide is applicable. Culpable Homicide: When the actus reus is present (the homicide) but that the accused did not have the mens rea (mental act) for murder, that is that they did not intend to kill. Culpable homicide can also occur where the accused did kill the victim with intent but there are mitigating factors such as provocation or diminished mental responsibility present, a factor which means they cannot be convicted of murder but at the same time cannot be acquitted.
Legal Definitions in FloridaCriminal Homicide:
"Section 210.1 of the U.S. Model Penal Code defines criminal homicide as follows: 1. A person is guilty of criminal homicide if he purposely, knowingly, recklessly or negligently causes the death of another human being. 2.Criminal homicide is murder, manslaughter, or negligent homicide.” (Davies, 2008) Murder:“According to the Model Penal Code, murder in the first degree (also commonly known as aggravated or premeditated murder) is the ‘(1) unlawful killing of (2) one person by another (3) with malice aforethought, and (4) with deliberation, purpose, design, or premeditation’ (Klotter, 2001). Murder in the first degree may further be divided into murder and voluntary murder as follows: Murder is the (1) unlawful killing of (2) one person by another (3) with malice aforethought. In contrast, then, voluntary murder is the (1) unlawful killing of (2) one person by another (3) intentional killing with adequate provocation and committed in the heat of passion.” (Davies, 2008) Manslaughter:"Manslaughter is the unlawful killing of a human being without premeditation. ‘It is not a degree of murder but a distinct offense, although sometimes it is referred to as third-degree murder’ (Klotter, 2001)” (Davies, 2008)

Daniel Reid- Individual Report on Wiki Project and Experience
Group Position – SIO(Senior Investigating Officer)
Experience: This has been my second experience on a wiki project and I have to say is one in which I would love to be given the opportunity to undertake again. When we were first told about the wiki and that we were working with students from Florida University I was extremely excited as it is not everyday you get to participate in such projects. I have found the wiki both enjoyable and challenging at some points and I now believe that this has allowed me to further my knowledge on understanding the criminal justice system both in America and Scotland. Throughout the 6 weeks there has been numerous challenges given to the group and as a team I believe we worked extremely well which made for a more enjoyable experience all round.
Role: I was nominated as SIO for the project which at first seemed a very daunting task however at the same time I was extremely privileged to be given such an important role. I was able to guide the group through the weeks as best I could and although at some points it proved to be difficult to deal with all the information we were given I managed to improve my skills and learn to time manage in order to make sure the group stayed on track. As role of SIO this has given me the stepping stones to further my team leadership skills after university and with doing a past graduate in law when I leave I feel this will be extremely beneficial.
Overall the experience was one in which I will not forget and I believe was an ideal project for final year students as in many ways is a nice change from the norm of essay writing and also provides new challenges to undertake and gain new skills from as well.

Experience: This was my first time ever using a Wiki and I really enjoyed getting to work with the students from Scotland. I think this project has really taught me to stay focused and made me realize just how difficult a task such as solving a murder can be. This project has been fun as well as challenging. I’ve enjoyed the learning experience and most of all the chance to work with the other students.
Role: I was the Medical Examiner which I found to be very interesting. This project also made me realize how important it is that everyone works together on investigations because I would not have been able to successfully fulfil my role without the information provided by officers in other roles such as the investigations team
