In Kosbad during the monsoonsthere are so many shades of green

your mind forgets other colours.

At that timeI am seventeen, and have just started

The poem of Sujata Bhatt talks of a situation that helps the poet to understand creative talents in writing poetry. When she was seventeen

years old she met the eighty nine years old Swami Anand.

He become her guide and Guru. The poem tells that the Swami is very

healthy and walks over the mountains of Himalayas without any help.

Swami Anand is eighty nineand almost blind.

His thick glasses don’t seem to work, they only magnify his cloudy eyes.

Mornings he summons me from the kitchen

and I read to him until lunch time. One day he tell me

‘you can read your poems now’.I read a few, he is silent.

Page 10: Powerpoint the himalayas

Thinking he’s asleep, I stop. But he says, ‘continue’.

I begin a long onein which the Himalayas rise

as a metaphor.

Suddenly I am ashamedto have used the Himalayas like this,

ashamed to speak of my imaginary mountainsto a man who walked throughthe ice and snow of Gangotri

barefoota man who lived close to Kanchenjungaand Everest clad only in summer cotton.

He become one with nature because the ice and show did not stop him

from moving around or the weather created any problem for him. Even

though his physical disabilities create some problems, there was no

problem in their learning relationship.

She was always confident to bring him in to her

poems and read out for his opinion.

He is silent a long while, then, he says

‘there’s nothing I can tell youexcept continue’.

Page 15: Powerpoint the himalayas

Each time she reads, he has the same remark for her when she asks, and that was “to continue”. This was a tremendous encouragement for her

to do the mental climbing and face the adventurous process in creative

writing.

In short, Sujata Bhatt hints that writing is nothing but a

mental mountaineering attempted by artists.
