What is Bullying?

• Bullying is when one person, or a group of people, make another person feel uncomfortable, upset or hurt.

• Bullying is intentional – a person who bullies hurts someone else on purpose.

• Bullying is persistent – it happens more than once.

Bullying can be:

• Physical – being violent towards someone, stealing from them or damaging their belongings.

• Verbal – name calling, saying nasty things about family and friends, making unkind jokes, threatening someone, saying nasty things behind someone’s back.

Bullying can be:

• Technological ( cyber-bullying)– sending nasty text messages, silent or abusive phone calls, sending nasty emails.

• Indirect – spreading horrible stories about someone, ignoring them, excluding them from a game or group.

What can we do if we see someone being bullied?

Bullying Scenario Worksheet

• Look at the bullying scenario and the list of possible things you could do.

• Put them in order with the thing you would be most likely to do at the top and least likely to do at the bottom.

• Which of the things do you think would be most likely to help stop the bullying? Why?

How do people get bullied in the playground?

• Pushed• Excluded• Teased• Fighting• Picked on• Gossiping

What can I do if someone says something nasty to me?

Use Humour - say something funny back.

made about you which you didn’t like.

• Think of a funny reply or comment you could have said in return.

• Practise saying these out loud – remember to use a strong and confident voice!

• Tell an adult• Tell your parents• Tell someone who is responsible

What else can I do if I’m being bullied?

• Use your body language – people “say things” even when they don’t actually talk. Appear confident by smiling, keeping your head up and looking people in the eye.

• Keep your voice strong – try to speak in a loud clear voice.

• Take reinforcements – if you need to go somewhere new or difficult, take a friend,or someone from your family.
