Tennis doubles for Power Jacks after second Wimbledon contract win Specialist engineering business Power Jacks has secured another ace contract… supporting the installation of a second retractable roof at the home of tennis.

The contract has been awarded to Power Jacks by roof engineers SCX Special Projects after a competitive tendering process. The Scottish-based business provided key components when a roof was famously established over the Centre Court at Wimbledon in 2009. Now Power Jacks has been selected again to manufacture and supply roof-locking actuators as part of a major project to install a roof over No.1 Court. Marketing Director Bruce Hamper says: “It’s a huge honour for Power Jacks to be selected to support such a high profile and prestigious project at one of the greatest venues in world sport. “It is testimony to the talent and commitment of our people, and the proven quality of our solutions, that those behind the project have

again made Power Jacks their provider of choice for elements of the construction.”

Andy Whitworth, Projects Director at SCX Special Projects, says: “SCX Special Projects prides itself on delivering innovative engineering solutions that are precise, reliable and safe, but never short of that all-important wow factor. The Wimbledon roofs are prime examples of our expertise in kinetic architecture, and these feats of engineering are made possible through the involvement of partners like Power Jacks.”

The electric linear actuators provided by Power Jacks will lock the closed roof in place after it has been moved into position. The fully retractable and weatherproof roof itself takes the form of a framework of steel trusses between which sit a series of bays of structural fabric.

Power Jacks – based in Ellon in Aberdeenshire – is scheduled to supply the components to SCX in early 2017. They will be installed, tested and fully operational as part of an off-site roof assembly later next year, with installation scheduled for October 2018. The retractable roof will be fully operational for The Championships 2019.The deal replicates Power Jacks’ involvement in the Centre Court roof project, which attracted worldwide attention when it was first completed.“We’ve collaborated with SCX on several occasions, including the Centre Court development, and it’s good to be working together again on such a prominent project,” adds Bruce Hamper.“We’ve applied the same bespoke technology used in the original

Wimbledon contract to ensure we meet the very precise specifications and quality standards required. It underlines the diversity of application of our product range, which is used today in industries ranging from energy and transport to defence and civil applications.

“It’s great to know that Power Jacks technology will be helping even more people enjoy the tennis at Wimbledon, regardless of the weather!”

Maintenance-free chain helps provide long term flood controlThe expertise of chain drive specialists at Tsubaki UK is being called upon to help manage winter water levels, particularly in low lying parts of the country. The aim is to control river flows and reduce the instances of flooding which is becoming increasingly important as climate change is leading to warmer, wetter weather.

Close up of water gate lifting chain and sprocket, showing corrosion and dry/unlubricated condition, before it was replaced with Tsubaki chain.

The Tsubaki Neptune coating is ideal for corrosion protection in harsh environments. The lubrication is fit for the life of the chain and therefore no maintenance is required.

View down onto the top of the water gate, showing chain with extended pins.

Tsubaki supplies high performance chain for operating lifting gates in water level control centres. These centres are used to regulate the volume of water in rivers so that they don’t burst their banks and flood towns, villages and valuable farmland in areas like the Somerset Levels and the Norfolk Broads, which would otherwise naturally flood almost every year.

Greg Sharp of Tsubaki explains: “These lifting gates basically have a summer setting to hold back water for crop irrigation and a winter setting to open up and release potential flood waters, so typically are usually operated only a few times a year. The chain has to be strong enough to cope with the high loads applied when lifting the gates.”

“However, the real issue is that they are usually in remote locations, so receive little or no maintenance, yet are expected to function perfectly over a lifetime of twenty years or more. Traditionally there has been a problem in that the chains can become stiff and difficult to articulate due to wear and corrosion brought about, in part, by lack of lubrication. This can cause the gates to jam in mid-travel, or even lead to chain failure.”

Tsubaki’s solution is to produce retro-fit chains that will connect to existing gate fittings and mounts, to make upgrading a simple process. The wide range of chains include standard and bespoke roller chains and cranked link chains which are

complimented by upgrade options.

“Our recently upgraded Neptune coating is ideal for corrosion protection in the harsh environment. There are also standard options to coat the chain in high adhesion wax based lubrication coatings, benefitting both wear and corrosion resistance,” says Greg. “The lubrication is fit for the life of the chain and therefore no maintenance is required.”

Tsubaki is able to offer a wide range of attachments, so that chain can be customised to particular applications. For the water control gate extended pin attachments are part of a fail-safe system, which is designed to catch the gate if it should fall and hold it in position until a repair crew arrives.

In a similar water industry application, Tsubaki also supplies a variety chains for water processing and treatment plants. Although usually out of sight and out of mind, water treatment works are a vital part of modern society and must work reliably at all times. Once built, they will typically run constantly for 100 years or more and are a cornerstone in the public health strategy for the region they serve. Chains are used as part of the processing and protection of the water processing plant.

In such an application a standard chain would have a very short life due to the combined effects of corrosion and chain elongation. Tsubaki supplies many treatment works with a long life chain reducing wear and corrosion. This leads to several benefits for the site: the overall amount of downtime required for maintenance is reduced and thus the processing plant is better utilised, which in turn generates an increase in efficiency. Also chain replacement costs drop, releasing funds for other uses.

Drive Lines attain new quality management standard

The new requirements place more emphasis on management-lead procedures that are designed to promote continuous improvement. They also encourage the use of risk assessment techniques that highlight potential problems before they arise.

“Drive Lines has been ISO 9001 approved since 2002, so have been through the 2000 and 2008 revisions,” says Ian Carr, Drive Lines Managing Director. “We see the revisions as a driver for us to review the internal procedures that define our quality standards and service levels and ensure that we continue to offer the highest performance levels to our clients.”

Drive Lines’ internal re-evaluation process was deliberately designed to be rigorous and included a review of their complete quality management system: procedures, audits and assessments. It has led to an improvement in the company’s already high standards of quality and transparency.

“We think that by taking a positive attitude towards standards and compliance we maximise their benefit to us – and hence our clients,” concludes Ian.

the revisions as an opportunity to review its quality management and ensure that it remains ahead of the curve within its industry.

ISO 9001 is a quality management system standard that has been adopted around the world. Rather than simply defining procedures and expectations, ISO 9001 is designed to be a business improvement tool that encourages continuous reviews, streamlining and costs reduction. It helps businesses work effectively, both internally and with other organisations, become resilient and demonstrate their strong corporate governance.

Drive Lines Technologies has become one of the UK’s first mechanical power transmission companies to be approved to the new, revised ISO9001:2015 standard for quality management.

JVLs MIS23 and MIS23 Quickstep series delivers more torque

Now available in the UK from Mclennan, JVL Industri Elektronik´s newest range of NEMA 23 integrated stepper motors offer unprecedented configuration flexibility - and with its closed-loop control and optional rare-earth hybrid stepper motor technology can deliver up to 40% higher torque output than open loop versions. With the potential to significantly reduce machine size through its superior power density factor the new MIS23 Quickstep series joins JVL´s larger and more powerful MIS34 version which is based on the NEMA 34 stepper motor.

The well proven integrated motor concept that JVL has pioneered over several iterations includes a stepper or servo motor plus a built-in drive with an optional programmable motion controller and a wide choice of field bus and communication interfacing possibilities. The MIS Quickstep series builds upon previous stepper motor based designs with an absolute encoder and a novel microstepping technology that can provide a resolution to 409600 counts per rev for exceptional levels of precision, smoothness and resonance-free operation. Furthermore its closed loop design offers a torque mode control feature for stall-free operation as well as high acceleration and high speed. For the MIS23 (NEMA23) version with its options of standard or rare earth magnet technology and various motor stack lengths, nominal torque output is from 1.1 to 2.5 Nm with peak torque to 3.5 Nm and speeds to 3000 rpm. Speed precision is to 0.01 rpm whilst acceleration precision is as low as 1 rpm/sec.

The feature rich MIS Quickstep series includes a built-in ´MacTalk Nano´ PLC as standard that can take care of a wide range of motion control functions using a proprietary graphical programming environment. With high speed position capture, maths functions and electronic gearing possible, and with a complement of digital and analogue IO, the MIS 23 can control simple single-axis machines in its own right. An RS485 port or optional CANopen interface provides other simple control opportunities whilst a choice of six Ethernet based protocols including EtherCAT, Powerlink, Ethernet/IP and SERCOS III make the integrated stepper a compelling choice for distributed multi-axis motion

control applications. Furthermore the flexibility extends to Bluetooth™, ZigBee or WLAN wireless control as well as ActiveX/OCX drivers for integration into high-level programming languages. A Safe Torque Off (STO) input is also specifiable for disabling the energy to the motor under emergency conditions.

The durable MIS23 can be supplied with optional IP65 rating with Ethernet and wireless electronics mounted inside the motor in a closed section with protection up to IP67. Mechanical options include double shafts, electromechanical brakes and electrical interfacing via M12 industrial grade connectors can be oriented on the top or the back face of the motor housing.

Mclennan supports JVL´s MIS23 and 34 Quickstep series integrated motors with compatible planetary or spur gearboxes and other power transmission components. With distribution partnerships and its own comprehensive design and build service available, Mclennan provides stepper and servo motor based automation solutions from single components to complete mechatronic assemblies.

THIS IS HAVING A FINANCIAL IMPACT

With power companies under pressure to ensure reliability, one in five incurred costs of over $1 million from unplanned downtime attributed to incorrect equipment lubricationPower companies are incurring significant costs from errors in equipment lubrication, according to a study by Shell Lubricants . Companies admit that around six in ten incidences of unplanned downtime in the last three years were likely due to their incorrect selection or management of lubricants. This is having a financial impact – 26% of companies estimate that these shutdowns cost their business at least $250,000 and one in five (18%) state that costs have exceeded $1 million.

The international study of power companies across Asia, Europe and the Americas commissioned by Shell Lubricants reveals that companies are underestimating the potential cost savings and productivity gains from effective equipment lubrication. Many companies do not realise that lubrication can significantly influence equipment reliability, with 60% of companies stating they wouldn’t expect higher quality lubricants to result in a reduction in unplanned downtime.

Marcelo Goldberg, Shell Global Sector Manager for Power, said: “In power, every day is critical. When people flick a switch, they expect the power to be there instantly. This places power companies under immense pressure to ensure reliable, efficient operations and avoid costly unplanned downtime. However, companies tend to

underestimate the potential impact of equipment lubrication, often due to a lack of understanding. Shell Lubricants has a team of technical experts who work closely with customers to help ensure they select the right lubricants

and, importantly, manage them correctly. In doing so, we have delivered millions of dollars of savings.” Two of the major barriers preventing companies from maximising the cost-saving potential of their lubrication

procedures are insufficient employee expertise and a lack of process. 59% of those surveyed think they don’t conduct staff training on lubricants as regularly as they should, and only 43% of companies have all the correct procedures in place to manage lubricants effectively. Misunderstandings around lubricants are also evident. Only half of companies (52%) understand how lubrication management can help reduce maintenance costs, and 41% understand how lubricants can deliver cost savings through improved wear protection.

Marcelo Goldberg commented; “Companies do recognize the potential for savings, but underestimate the opportunity. While 58% of companies recognise that selecting the right lubricant could reduce costs by 5% or more , only 1 in 4 think that savings could exceed 10%. But with a gap in staff expertise on lubrication, and only 25% of businesses making use of regular visits from their lubricant supplier’s technical staff, most are not well equipped to take action. One of the services our technical experts offer is to work with customers to help coach their staff in effective lubrication management procedures.”

Shell Lubricants has released a whitepaper to address some of these issues and show the tangible business benefits that can be achieved through correct selection and management of lubricants.

Precision combined roller bearings and mating steel profilesWhen we talk about ‘precision’ in this context we are not here talking about a tighter set of tolerances relevant to the internal *construction of the full complement cylindrical roller bearing but rather the tightening of the external running tolerance between the outside diameter of the combined roller bearing and the ‘mouth’ of the mating steel profile.

This is achieved by accurately milling the ‘mouth’ of the hot rolled steel section, which of course increases the dimension of the mouth, and

This is useful for a designer to know:The tighter running tolerance between the bearing and the rail makes it suitable for applications requiring higher positional precision, whilst still offering the high load capacity of the combined roller system and the cost benefits over many other linear motion systems.

For example: A horizontal ‘drawer’ system carrying ISO tooling for machine tools where pick-up positon it critical.

A horizontal sliding pick and place system that cannot be economically built using machine tool type sliding systems.

Other lower accuracy robotic systems, packaging, palletising, de-palletising pick and place.

*(Please note both Euro-Bearings standard and precision combined roller bearings are made to ISO ‘Normal’ tolerances for radial bearings)

Atlas Copco introduces airLET: Compressed air on demandAtlas Copco has launched airLET, a new pay-as-you-go compressed air scheme. airLET embraces the latest energy efficient air compressors and predictive maintenance technology, backed up by full after-sales service support, to provide end users with a guaranteed and reliable compressed air supply under a flexible agreement. It is designed specifically for customers who may experience periodic extra usage demands or have limited capital reserves.

Paul Clark, UK Business Line Manager, Atlas Copco Industrial Air Division, commented: “This represents a completely new offering for our customers. With an airLET agreement, customers only pay for what they use. A monthly fixed service charge and a variable compressed air usage fee, measured by our SmartLink remote monitoring system, enable users to plan and manage their operational

costs according to current needs and budgets.”

An airLET agreement covers all the equipment needed for a complete air solution: GA VSD+ (Variable Speed Drive) rotary screw compressors that provide average energy savings of 50% compared with fixed-speed alternatives, dryers, filters, air receivers, condensate drains, oil-water separators and AirNet compressor room aluminium pipework.

The airLET scheme also includes installation, as well as parts, service and breakdown cover during working hours within the fixed monthly fee. This eliminates any unexpected or hidden costs for unforeseen repairs. On-time preventive maintenance by expert engineers using genuine Atlas Copco parts assures uninterrupted performance at optimum efficiency.

The simple and flexible airLET agreement includes upgrade or downgrade options after 12 months that enable users to adapt compressed air production with consumption, based on the production levels registered by the SmartLink remote monitoring system. Equipment can be upsized or downsized where necessary, with the option to exchange for alternative capacity units; or even return them at the end of the contract.

airLET offers a different value proposition for Atlas Copco’s customers in the UK. No major investment in capital equipment is required and the scheme offers flexible, energy efficient installations that can be changed as needed; offering the best performance with a reduced level of risk in times of uncertainty. In addition, end users benefit from the assurance of being

fully covered for any repairs and potential breakdowns; with after-sales service support provided in a guaranteed response time.

McKinnon & Forbes is a family-run authorised IVECO van dealership based in Paisley that also repairs and services HGV trucks, vans and private vehicles. The company employs 30 staff at its 14,000 sq. ft. headquarters, which is devoted to vehicle repair and body-shop operations, and serves many large fleet leasing groups in Scotland.

Compressed air is a vital utility for the company: supplying air tools and equipment within its three large service pits, post ramp and six standard repair bays; plus, a spray booth and two paint baking ovens.

A sales engineer from Atlas Copco approached McKinnon & Forbes to

magnet IPM motor. This technology has turned the compressed air industry on its head by redesigning the conventional layout of a typical air compressor. Instead of the normal horizontal configuration, the unit has an upright, vertical low footprint layout designed to save floor and work space while improving maintenance access even if placed against a wall.

Steven McKinnon, director of McKinnon & Forbes commented: “I would recommend Atlas Copco to anyone, even if they were not directly looking to change their compressor. The information I received helped not only to drive down my costs and save space, but also helped bring me right up to date with the latest legislation regarding the treatment and disposal of compressor condensate.”

The small footprint and quiet operation of the compressor enabled it to be sited within the workshop, thereby overcoming the excessive condensation problems emanating from the externally located pipework of the old system. Furthermore, the point-of-use relocation meant residual heat from the new compressor could be used to provide added comfort to the working environment.

When you require a low cost, efficient and reliable motor for applications in a sensitive environment, the Dynatork 3 air motor from Huco presents an optimum solution. Designed for efficient, spark-free operation, the Dynatork 3 air motor offers simplicity and high performance even under harsh duty cycles. Affordable, compact and easy to maintain - such benefits have seen Dynatork 3 air motors utilised in the wood, hydrocarbon, paper, paint, food processing and even stealth industries. The immediate benefit of selecting an air motor is that it offers spark-free operation without resorting to an expensive shielded ATEX-rated electric motor. In hazardous environments it’s important to reduce the risk of sparks wherever possible, so specifying a motor that operates entirely on compressed air is the recommended and most cost effective solution. As a result, the Dynatork 3 air motor is compliant for use in ATEX Zone 1 applications. The Dynatork 3 air motor incorporates Huco’s unique free-floating piston technology, which minimises air leakage past the piston. This ensures that the vast majority of the energy present in the compressed air is converted into motion, resulting in air consumption up to 80% less than an equivalent vane air motor. This of course translates into substantial energy savings for end users, even during heavy operation.Air is supplied at up to 100psi to each of the three pistons through an integral rotary valve, providing maximum torque from start-up. The motor can also be fitted with torque sensors to provide closed loop feedback for accurate position control without the need for expensive electronic controls. The advantage of such construction is obvious during operations that require stop/start applications under load. If an AC or DC motor is held by a brake, the motor risks burnout within a very short timeframe. However, an air motor will simply stop and then seamlessly operate again when the brake is released. With no components that can be damaged, an air motor can be started, stopped and restarted with no debilitating effects upon the device itself. These properties mean that the motor can be utilised in indexing operations, offering precision and control of motion required for such applications.Ease of maintenance and installation are also offered by Dynatork 3 air

Designed for efficient, spark-free operation, the Dynatork 3 air motor offers simplicity and high performance even under harsh duty cycles.

motors. The motor is lightweight, allowing it to be moved easily for installation and maintenance work. Disconnecting the device from the air supply is also straightforward, minimising maintenance costs and reducing downtime. Furthermore, due to its small footprint, the Dynatork 3 air motor saves space within the application area, especially when compared to an electric alternative that may require a bulky gearbox, enclosure or variable speed drive. The motor can be specified in aluminium, stainless steel or acetal versions. Stainless steel or acetal housings are particularly suited to environments where regular wash-downs are required, with its high resistance to caustic acids and chlorinated sanitizers acetal is perfectly adapted for use in food and beverage processing.Dynatork air motors can also be supplied using non-magnetic materials suitable for applications where magnetic fields and electro-magnetic interference are concerns. No electricity is required which makes the motor an ideal selection for MRI scanners, operations underwater or in stealth applications, where the minimising of signals is of paramount importance to avoid detection. For more specialist applications Huco recommends consulting with its engineering team to adapt a suitably evolved system.Flexible, reliable and cost effective – the Huco Dyntrok 3 air motor range offers a speed range between up to 800 rpm and torques up to 15Nm without gear reduction.

Stainless Steel Conveyor Belt for Plasma Treatment ProcessA major global provider of plasma treatment services for OEMs in a variety of industries – including power generation, consumer goods, and medical device production – recently contacted Belt Technologies for a conveyor belt solution. Their team was seeking a conveyor belt with a longer lifespan than the rubber belt they were originally using to move products through the plasma treatment process.

Rubber Conveyor Belts Fail in High Temperature EnvironmentsIn this particular application, thin copper components were being transported through a plasma treatment process on a toothed, rubber belt. However, the plasma treatment requires high temperatures, sometimes up to 400°C. The belt runs through a tunnel carrying a lead frame, where the products are plasma treated. Once complete, the products

and belt are washed with cold water to return them to room temperature.Extreme fluctuations in temperatures as well as exposure to high temperature will have a detrimental effect on rubber. The toothed, rubber conveyor belts would warp and break after a minimal number of cycles. The cost of replacing them, and the downtime required to make the switch each time the belts wore down, was creating an unnecessary drop in productivity.

Heat-Treated Stainless Steel Lasts Longer Under Challenging ConditionsStainless steel has a low thermal expansion coefficient, which gives

it the ability to resist extreme temperatures without warping or breaking. The customer knew they would need to switch to a metal conveyor belt to withstand the heat of the

plasma treatment process but was seeking advice on the best material type for their application. Aside from a high temperature resistance, the new belt would need to be highly accurate and provide smooth, linear movement.

Trust the Experts at Belt Technologies for Custom Conveyor Belt Design SolutionsOur engineers recommended a simple solution of five solid stainless steel belts running in parallel. The belts are made from heat-treated

steel (17-7CH-900), which is able to withstand temperatures as high as 425°C. The new conveyors have been in service for several months with no reported issues. With less downtime spent on replacing burnt out rubber belts, the customer is able to maximize product throughput and save money on maintenance. They are very satisfied with the smooth performance of the new stainless steel conveyors.

Miniature Gearboxes reset performance expectationsPowerGear Miniature bevel gearboxes are compact yet capable of transferring considerable levels of torque, at high speed and with high efficiency. They are robust and designed to be maintenance free, so are ideal for applications that require high power density and/or excellent reliability. They are also lightweight, so suited to use in mobile applications.

The PowerGear range of miniature gearboxes is manufactured by MS-Graessner, which has been cutting gears and leading related design and development ideas for over sixty years. They are available in the UK through Drive Lines Technologies Ltd.

Ian Carr, Managing Director of Drive Lines is enthusiastic about them,

saying: “Dimensions, weight, and precision – the PowerGear Miniature sets new standards. Throughout the range, the compact design gives an incredibly small installation size and the aluminium housings make them ultra lightweight. Their performance resets user expectations in terms of both power and precision.

“The unique design of PowerGear Miniature is opening up a vast range of new applications. We expect them to become popular in areas such as medical equipment, food processing, packaging and specialist automation.”

Design features that set PowerGear Miniature apart from other gearboxes include a case-hardened bevel gear tooth system, a friction locked shaft

and bevel gear fit and an extremely lightweight aluminium housing. This ensures low backlash and high transmission accuracy alongside an energy efficiency of 98%. Lubrication is based on long life maintenance free synthetic oil.

PowerGear Miniature is available in three sizes. The smallest, P27 has a footprint of 27 square millimetres; it is offered with two ratio options, 1:1 and 1.5:1, with nominal output torque being 3.5Nm. The larger P33 and the P45 are both available with five ratio options, 1:1, 1.5:1, 2:1, 3:1 and 4:1 and they have nominal output torques of 5Nm and 16Nm respectively. Input speed for all of them is up to 7500rpm.

A Gleason gear tooth profile is used throughout the range. This optimises the contact pattern throughout the tooth to tooth engagement cycle so that the load is uniformly spread across the tooth, enabling the high speeds and high torque performance.

Carr again: “The Powergear Miniatures are offered in a standard range but are also suitable for customisation so that they perfectly match the needs of individual applications.”

Heavy-duty connectors for compact power transmissionIn modern machines and systems, the complexity and associated costs for networking and control technology are increasing, without more space being made available for them. With the reworked Heavycon D7 connector range, Phoenix Contact is offering power transmission in a compact design. The metal housings have been made around 40% lighter. In spite of their

small design, there is sufficient cable space for high-position cables or large cross sections. The conductive surface and conductive seals offer good EMC properties when combined with a suitable screw connection. The panel mounting bases are secured with four screws. This means they can handle extreme forces and speeds. Temporarily used interfaces can be reliably sealed with securely fastened caps.

A new feed-through housing can optionally be mounted from the front or rear side. It also provides you with IP and EMC-compliant protection on the connection side. The plastic housings have also been reworked. The integrated cable gland reliably seals small and large cable diameters. A large range of contact inserts ensures that signals and power of up to 40 A can be safely transmitted.
