Hahn is one of Europe’s leading manufacturer of vacuumed casted transformers in the power range of 0.5 to 200VA. Hahn has a totally manufacturing capacity of approximately 150, 000 transformers per day, divided into three factories, two in Germany and one in Ukraina. With 35 years of experience, Hahn is in the front edge of product development, quality and delivery precision. Hahn has a stock of more than 500 different standard types for immediately delivery. But if none of these 500 standard types doesn't fit to your application also customer specific types are very much welcomed from quantities of 100 pcs per shipment. Approvals Most of the internationals approvals inclusive the new European standard EN61558, which fully complies with IEC950. By default, Hahn is manufacturing all transformers for use in ta 70.

BV20 Very small power transformer with the sizes (l*w*h) 21.7*22.6*15.0 mm (0.35VA) or 21.7*22.6*19.0 mm (0.5VA) with input voltage at 400V or less. EI30-EI96 EI30 to EI96 are standard designs of core type EI. The most common series is EI30, has the size (l*w*h) 32.5*27.5* h mm where h is related to the power rating. 0.5 - 3.2 VA correspond to 15.2 - 33.8 mm. EI38 – EI96 has a power range of 3.2 to 200VA. The EI series are available as PCB mounted, with flat pin connectors (RAST5) or screwed connection. Input voltage up to 500V.

GENERAL TECHNICAL INFORMATION

Thermal energy in transformers The heat is a transformers enemy no1. Too much self generating heat and to high ambient temperature can seriously damage the transformer and lead to short circuit and voltage breakdown. Hahn’s transformers are designed with these problems in consideration. To increase the heat dissipation capability and dielectric strength the transformers are winded with a heat-resisting copper wire (180°C) and casted with heat resistant epoxy resin (135°C). To guarantee a non-porous casting and a one hundred percentage adherence of the epoxy resin to the copper wire, the winding are casted in absolute vacuum in a three-stage process To reduce the self-heating procedure, the EI-series core is welded, which will lead to a 40% increase of power within a specific core size, versus ordinary snap-core. Before delivery, there is a 100% test of the primary and secondary voltage at no load and at rated load, no load current, isolation voltage and footprint.

Standard and low-profile design Standard design, series EI, is generally cheaper to produce than the low-profile series, UI, this because UI-series has two bobbins instead of one. The price difference is 50 to 80 %. The UI-series has a lower design then EI (see the overview table). Normally there is an isolation advantage with two coil formers (series UI) instead of one (series EI), but in case they are vacuum casted both series complies 100% with the class II isolation. Standard or customer specific Hahn’s stock of standard transformers is located close to Frankfurt, Germany and contains over 500 different types. We need five days to delivery from this stock to your doorstep. Beside this, ELFA is stocking a large number of these types in Sweden. Hahn’s productions equipment can easily be setup to produce customer specific transformers. So they can easily produce transformers with other demands then standard, when ordering at least one hundred transformers. Fore example two secondary winding with different voltage, higher isolating demands or 500V primary voltage. The customer specific transformers has a delivery time of six weeks and don’t have any considerable extra cost.

Isolating-classes Most of all electronic equipments today are manufactured in so called class II design, which means that no protective earth is needed. To accomplish this, the transformer needs satisfactory isolation between the primary, secondary and the core. EN61558 demands that the transformer shall withstand a test voltage at 4kV. On account of Hahn’s excellent cast technology, all transformers are tested at 6kV, only to give an extra safety margin. Further demands are that the air- and the creepage distance are larger than 8mm. With Hahn’s cast-technology the core will be considered as a homogeneous mass without any internal air- and creepage distance.

Approval Hahn’s transformers comply with the requirements of EN61558 and IEC950. Most of the transformers are approved by a third part certification by VDE/KEMA and UL/CSA and have the right to be marked with ENEC and UL. The material and the design are the same in all transformers and therefore it is easy to get approvals in new applications. Temperature classes The temperature class ta 40/F and ta 70/F indicate the maximum ambient temperature in degree Celsius at max load. Most of Hahn’s transformers are classified to T70/F. At max load, the self-heating is abut 30-40°C, with gives a total temperature of 100-110°C. All of Hahn’s transformers can manage a self-temperature at 130°C without cause any damage. Short-circuit proof Up to 3,2VA all Hahn’s transformers are inherently short-circuit proof. Which means that the transformer is designed so it can manage the short-circuit temperature during at least 8 days without getting damaged. The temperature must not exceed 175°C according to EN61558. This means that no fuse is needed on the primary side. For larger transformers (3.2 up to 10VA) we recommend that PTC resistor is used instead of glass tube fuse. No load voltage No load voltage for short circuit proof transformers is normally 40-85% higher then the nominal voltage. This because the high internal resistance on the secondary side. The high resistance is needed to limit the short circuit current so that the temperature rise at short circuit not will exceed the allowed limit. The maximum allowed temperature rise at short circuit is 135°K for T40 and 105°K for T70 transformers. That means that the T70 internal impedance is greater then the impedance on a T40 transformer, and the no load voltage is higher at T70 then a T40. Non- short circuit proof transformer has a no load voltage that is 20 -30% of the nominal voltage.

Over-load protection As a protection against overload we recommend the use of PTC resistors. If the transformer only has one secondary winding the PTC resistor can be connected to the primary side. In cases with more then one secondary winding, one PTC resistor must be connected to each secondary winding. In the table below they are columns for Imax depending on the ambient temperature (@ta25 and ta70). If the ambient temperature are between 25˚C and 70˚C all values between can be interpolated. For currents out of range, a glass-tube fuse can be used.

CALCULATION EXAMPLE The calculations example below should be considered as approximations and serve as a guide to specify the transformers URMS and IRMS. In all formulas we have taking consideration to a ripple of maximum 2VP-P. Further we have provided that the capacitance of the capacitor “CL” is 3000µF per A load current for circuit 1 to 3, and 8000µF per A load current for circuit 4. As will be seen from the formulas below, circuit 1 is far more efficient than the
