Pottsboro is a great place to live, raise a family, and do business. Our rich heritage dates back to 1876 when James A. Potts donated land for

a town and right-of-way so that the Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railroad would extend its tracks west from Denison. In 1880, Pottsboro was incorporated as a town.In 1944, the construction of the Denison Dam was complete and in 1957 the waters of Lake Texoma rose above the clear cut line. According to the Lake Texoma Visitors Guide, Lake Texoma is the tenth largest lake in the US. With an estimated six million visitors each year, Lake Texoma is one of the pre-mier get away destinations of the Southwest.

Pottsboro has benefitted greatly from the tourism that has accompanied Lake Texoma. Many who have come through the years to play eventually choose to come stay because they have experienced the friendly folks and beautiful scen-ery of Pottsboro. The Pottsboro Area Chamber of Commerce is a resource for newcomers to tran-sition to our community. Over 300 members have joined the Chamber of Commerce in order to take advantage of the networking opportunities that the Chamber provides. We want to assist businesses in being successful. In 2012, a Business Advisory Council was developed to assist businesses, large and small, by providing opportunities for training and dialogue. This year we are working to launch the Leadership Institute of Pottsboro. It is a program that will system-

atically train citizens of Pottsboro to be prepared to be responsible and effective leaders for years to come. Our Chamber of Commerce has a cutting edge website designed to attract the attention of individuals and businesses that are looking to learn more about our community. There are opportunities to purchase advertising space on our web-site to promote your business. We also have a beautiful printed directory called The Source that is distributed throughout North Texas and Southern Oklahoma. There are ongoing networking events throughout the year that allow you to meet and connect with other individuals and businesses. The Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Center is conveniently located on FM 120 at the entrance of Friendship Park. Regular office hours are Tuesday through Friday 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. Rosemary Hall, Manager, is available during those times to assist you in any way. The Chamber office number is (903)786-6371.These are exciting days for Pottsboro. Our annual Pottsboro Area Chamber of Commerce Banquet is a great time to celebrate. Join us Friday, February 1 at 5:30 at Tanglewood Resort. Cost is $40 per person or $70 per couple. Full Agenda is the band that will be providing the entertainment for the evening. We will present awards to the Volunteer of the Year, Citizen of the Year, and the Business of the Year. Get connected. Get involved. 2012 was an interesting and memorable year for Pottsboro and the Pottsboro Area Chamber of Commerce. In June, we finally had the opportunity to officially begin the construction of our new Brookshire’s Grocery Store by conducting a ground breaking and welcoming luncheon. Over a dozen Brookshire’s executives and 70+ local residents stood in the middle of an empty field with shovels and smiles to signal to the world the Brookshire’s has arrived and is here to stay. When asked if he was happy with the ground breaking, Rick Rayford, CEO, simply said that in all his years with Brookshire’s, he had never witnessed a ground breaking with so many community supporters in attendance. It made him wonder if they should have planned a bigger

store. They are well along on the construction and their new Store Director, Paul Blake, says they are shooting for a mid-March opening.It was the year we saw the return of a weekly newspaper to our area. Thank you to Roger Palmer for bringing the Pottsboro Sun to our community and finally giving us an effective communications media in the 75076 area. Early in the year we launched the Business Advisory Council consisting of several Chamber members whose objective is to “Identify and implement what additional services should be added so that we may better serve our commercial members.” The first project identified was to design and construct a multiple merchants directional sign on the corner of Hwy 289 and 120 that will notify north bound motorists of the services available just to the East. We are continuing this council into 2013 and have several more ideas in the formative stage.One of the primary reasons individuals and businesses join the Chamber is for the opportunity to network with other individuals and businesses. During 2012 the Chamber organized and conducted 10 monthly Mix & Mingles with an average attendance of over 30 companies/individuals, Frontier Day with over 100 vendors and 500+ attendees, Tickle-Your-Ribs barbeque featuring the best, all-you-can eat barbeque ribs in North Texas. Over 125 folks enjoyed the food, music and frolicking on the shores of Texoma. Two multi-chamber meetings gave members the opportunity to share their stories with members of the Denison and Sherman Chambers. New in 2012 was a Hwy 82 Garage Sale which provided members with a chance to dispense of their unwanted items and buy their neighbors unwanted items. This annual event brought in dozens of folks for Lake Texoma and beyond and was a resounding success.Working with Tanglewood, we brought the Red River Bike Rally to Texoma Land from Sherman. Several hundred dollars were raised and donated to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Pottsboro, Sherman and Denison. According to their organizer, the Sherman Kiwanis, the ride was so successful they intend to continue holding this event in our area. This event not only helps the Boys & Girls Clubs but brings hundreds of

visitors to the Texoma area directly benefiting local businesses. Organizing/conducting these events and helping orient new member requires a lot of man-hours. Although Rosemary Hall, Chamber Manager, works tirelessly in organizing our continuous activities, the key to success is having an effective group of support personnel that can be depended on to help orient new members and assist where required. We call these folks, Ambassadors. Thanks to Diane Connery, this group was reorganized and reoriented this year. Becoming an Ambassador is now a position members aspire to achieve. They may work hard but they are rewarded and recognized for their efforts.Members are the key to success in any Chamber and Pottsboro is no different. This year we added 45 new members to the roster and many of them have already contributed to helping the Chamber operate more efficiently. We are now 308 members strong most are always willing to help when called upon. I would like to thank them all individually but for fear of missing some, I’ll just say, thank you all for your hard work and support. The many accomplishments we had in 2012 could not have been done without you.

The Pottsboro Area Chamber of Commerce held their well attended 36th annual banquet Friday night at Tanglewood Resort & Conference Center. Entertainment was provided by Full Agenda and the master of ceremonies was Bobby Hancock. State Representative Larry Phillips presented proclamations and certifi-cates of appreciation from both his office and Senator Craig Estes to the winners of four awards. Special guests were recognized and outgoing chamber president Denis Boquist was thanked for his service to the chamber as president. Outgoing board of directors and current board of directors were also recognized during the banquet.The award presentation was kicked off by Dianne Connery who pre-sented the Ambassador of the Year award to Peggy Harlan. Connery explained that the Ambassadors spread goodwill, hospitality and are the face of the chamber to the pub-lic. The Ambassador of the Year is chosen on a point system calculated by points for service throughout the year. “Thank you, I am very hon-ored to serve the chamber.” Harlan said. It was mentioned that she had only missed attending two events last year.Three businesses were nominated for the Business of the Year award—Pottsboro Area Public Library, Family Pharmacy and Pamela A. Moore, D.D.S. Michael Tucker of Texoma Destinations pre-sented the 2012 Business of the Year award to Family Pharmacy owned by Mark and Sue Peippo. The Citizen of the Year was award-ed next to Bobby Hancock. The award was presented by last year’s recipient, Betty Roether. “What an honor it is to live in Pottsboro, I

thank God every day that he led my family to Pottsboro,” Hancock said. He thanked his parents for his work ethic, and a love of people and God. He also thanked his wife and thanked Georgetown Baptist Church for allowing him to work in the community.The final award for the evening was the 2012 Volunteer of the Year award. The 2011 recipients, Jerry and Sara Park and Sid Snedeker presented the award to Ann Murray for her tireless volunteer efforts in Pottsboro. She was described as organized, dependable and deeply

committed to improve Pottsboro. Among her various volunteer duties; she serves as the director of the Pottsboro Senior Center and provides Meals on Wheels three times a week. She also plans day trips for the seniors with various local activities. Special thanks were given to the Platinum Sponsors-City of Pottsboro and Tanglewood Resort & Conference Center; Gold Sponsors-American Bank of Texas, Bayless-Hall Insurance Co., Highport Marina and Landmark Bank; Silver Sponsors Brookshire Grocery Co.,

In addition to the sponsors, thanks were also given to Diana Williams and Jo Melbourne, chairwomen of the banquet committee, Jeanie Gallinger, Candee Myers, Helen Schoeck and Rosemary Hall. In addition to the sponsors, a special thank you was extended to Home Staging Unlimited for the table cen-ter pieces, Quick Sign Company for the banners, Red River Trophy and Tanglewood.
