Area businesses and individuals were honored at the South County Chamber of

Commerce (http://www.southcountychamber.net/) Annual Awards Dinner

Thursday. Notable awardees include Dr. John G’Sell and Eva G’Sell for Business

Persons of the Year, Thomas O’Driscoll for Citizen of the Year and Kevin

Openlander with River City Casino for Outstanding New Member.

More than 200 people were in attendance at the awards dinner, which was held at

Royale Orleans on Telegraph in Mehlville. Nominees for the awards were selected

by the Chamber’s Board of Directors and then finalized by the awards committee.

Awards categories ranged from site beautification to community service to

leadership in education.

Husband and wife Dr. John and Eva G’Sell, who were given the Business Persons

of the Year award, operate a dentistry practice together. They were chosen for the

award because of their dedication to providing a positive customer experience and

their desire to go beyond what is required for service. Their daughter provided

testimony to their allaround excellence, describing how they’ve adopted

numerous families at Christmastime – and are still giving to those families over

two months later.

The G’Sell team was both excited and surprised about the award.

“We’re so proud that these people thought so much of us. We’re happy to be

recognized,” Eva G’Sell said.

Dr. John G’Sell shared his wife’s sentiments.

“I’m in total shock. I wasn’t expecting this […] We’re a communitybased business

so this award means more than any other award we could’ve received,” he said.

Thomas O’Driscoll, Citizen of the Year, was recognized for his determination to

help others despite his own setbacks. Injured in a hitandrun accident in 2003,

O’Driscoll has persevered and continues to operate his attorney practice while

being involved in the community and in the lives of his family and friends. His

daughter Maureen described the many ways O’Driscoll has helped people over the

years, saying “If they’re in need, no matter who it is, he’ll help.”

Kevin Openlander with River City Casino,

awarded Outstanding New Member, echoed

the sentiments of warmth and friendship

that other awardees discussed during their

acceptance speeches.

“The friendships I’ve made here are

absolutely great; and Pinnacle, the company

I work for, is very committed to the South

County area. We aren’t going anywhere,”

Openlander said.

Later, Openlander expressed his delight in

receiving the award. “I’m humbled by it …

I’ve never received any kind of award before.
