It is amajor festivalin Hinduism, and thisfestival issolemn and marks aremembrance of“overcoming darknessand ignorance” in lifeand the world. In KashmirShaivism, the festivalis called Har-ratri orphonetically simplerHaerath or Herath byShiva faithfuls of theKashmir region.

Maha Shivratri or theGreat Night of Shiva

Cannabis is alsosmoked to mark thisfestival, especially incountries like Nepaland India. MahaShivaratri is one ofthe most significantfestivals dedicated toLord Shiva. The dayhas many interestingMythological storiesbehind it. Accordingto most of the legends, the day of MahaShivaratri is associat-ed with Lord Shivaand many cosmicevents related to Himtook place on the verysame day.

Maha Shivaratri iscelebrated during thenight and day thatcomes just before thenew moon. ManyHindus celebrate with

It iscommon to fast duringMaha Shivaratri andto stay up all night ata place of worshipsinging hymns andverses of praise anddevotion to LordShiva. Many devoteesoffer special food thatis made from thefruits of the season, vegetables, andcoconuts. People whofast only break theirfast the next morningto eat the prasad - thefood offerings thatwere offered to Shiva.

Married womenobserve the fast ofShivaratri and prayfor the well being oftheir husbands andsons, while unmarriedgirls observe the fast

A very famoustradition associatedwith the shivratricelebrations is drink-ing thandai, which isa drink made of bhang- cannabis, sweetalmonds and milk.Lord Shiva is a majorHindu deity, thedestroyer, who is oftenrepresented in deepmeditation or dancing

Quality of traffic control aids:Cause for concern

In the past few years the vehicular population in Navi Mum-bai has grown manifold. The modes of transport have multipliedand the vehicular density is increasing exponentially with everypassing year. However the quality and quantity of the road net-work and traffic control aids have not kept pace with the demand. The traffic discipline has deteriorated and there seems to be norespect for the traffic rules and the traffic authorities. Rather theyoung generation seems to enjoy flouting the traffic rules andseems to take pride in driving fast but rash imitating Bollywoodmovies. Many of them take pride in driving vehicles even beforethey attain the mandatory qualifying age of 18 years, to be eligi-ble to possess a driving license. They do not have even the slightestinkling that by their behavior they are not only playing with theirlives, but are also putting to risk the lives of other commuters. Itis very unfortunate that the statistics for the road accidents areincreasing at an alarming pace, matching the pace at which thepeople are driving these modern machines. The gravity of thesituation has forced the government to direct its attention towardsroad safety measures and to seek solutions to the problem. Cel-ebrating “Road Safety Week” every year is a feeble attempt inthat direction.

While a number of factors are responsible for road accidents, prime reasons are blatant flouting of traffic rules and most im-portantly primitive and inadequate traffic control aids. Traffic sig-nals are effective means of regulating traffic. However if theseare installed before proper survey, they can become a nuisancefor the motorists and pedestrians alike.

Adequate street lighting, smooth riding surface, properly func-tioning of traffic control aids, traffic markings are some of theways of reducing road accidents. Since a large number of acci-dents involve pedestrians, it is necessary to devote attention to-wards their safety. An adequately designed and encroachmentfree pedestrian pathways are essential for segregating the ve-hicular and pedestrian traffic and they can provide the much de-sired sense of safety and protection to the pedestrians. Specialattention should be given towards lighting pedestrian cross walksand junctions.

An effective way of controlling and curbing accidents is thestrict implementation and enforcement of traffic rules. The driv-ing license should be issued only after rigorous examination pro-cess. While helmets should be made compulsory to the riders oftwo wheelers and fastening of seat belts should be made manda-tory for the drivers of four wheelers. By imposing other legisla-tive measures like introducing fines for flouting rules, imprison-ment or endorsement on licenses for reckless driving, road acci-dents can be minimized. The other field which needs immediateattention is traffic planning. It is today a very specialized fieldand cannot be designed by thumb rules as is being done today bythe authorities. It needs understanding of the subject besidesstudying the traffic behaviour and the psychology of the commut-ers in a particular region / city. So there is immediate need tohave the traffic study carried out by professionals and long termplanning done with futuristic approach, for Navi Mumbai, to opti-mize the infrastructure and to have easy and speedier and safecommuting.

Lubdhaka climbed abael tree for safetyand shelter for thenight. The growls oftigers and wildanimals scared himand in order to stayup all night heplucked one leaf at atime from the tree anddropped it whilechanting the name ofShiva. The nextmorning, Lubdhakarealized that he haddropped thousands ofleaves onto a Shivalingam and due to hisdevotion to Shiva,Lubdhaka wasrewarded with divinebliss and safe passagehome.

Maha Shivaratri isone of the biggestfestivals of Hindus.Devotees offer water, milk, dhatura, bhaang, akwanflowers to Shiva’s idolor Shivalinga andworship the HinduGod of destruction.Shiva is consideredthe ideal husband andunmarried girls andwomen pray for ahusband like him. InHindu mythology, every day in thecalendar holds somesignificance and thestories often vary from

different regions andcommunities.

According to alegend in the ShivaPurana, two of thetriads of Hindu Gods,Brahma and Vishnu, were fighting toestablish who’ssuperior between thetwo. Horrified at theintensity of the battle, the other gods askedShiva to intervene andhe assumed the formof a huge column offire in betweenBrahma and Vishnuto make them realizethe futility of theirfight. FROM THE CAMPUS Your views on graffiti on city walls? By Ryhea George

Question for next week: Should there be career counselling

session in Colleges for further studies?

I think creative and colourful graffiti on the street wallsof the city add a charm to the city. It sometime defineswhat the city is all about and it stays to be an uniquepiece of art. I would also like to say graffitis addressingsocial issues are a great initiatives as they attract a lotof people’s attention and also spread awareness.Kenny John, SYJC, St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai

I believe that for an artist the walls are stage wherethey can show their vision of how they see the world.Graffiti speaks louder than the artist itself do becausewhen people are looking at the wall with graffiti theyare looking at the creativity and not at the wall. Thisjustifies the saying that let them stop and stare.Himani Kaur Bal, SY BMM, Pillai HOC College

In this age, where “freedom of speech” remains just inour textbook and not in practice, especially with regardsto the people in power, I believe Graffiti on the city wallsact more as a political speech along with being a beauti-ful form of art. And that’s important since art has amajor impact on the people that witness it. Plain citywalls are boring. I love coming across graffiti by TylerStreet Art. It adds to free speech and makes the city

visually interesting. I guess using city walls to educate and elevate one’smind doesn’t hurt anyone, right?Prathiksha Shetty, Ty BMM Journalism, SIES Sion

Okay first of all I’m a person who loves to roam aroundin the city. I have come across a lot of grafitti on the citywalls and honestly I love them. Those walls are any-ways from old buildings they look dull and these grafit-tis add colour and life to these walls. Being a photogra-pher, a person who loves to click the city life, these wallsjust add more personality to my pictures. Also they holda certain kind of message or tell a story which anothergreat part of it. So yeah I do love the grafitti on the city

walls until and unless they are not some freaky ads.Pravin, TY BMM, Advertisement, Pillai College

Graffiti is writing or drawing made on a wall or othersurface. The purpose of graffiti can be to tell a story. Itcan be to tell you about a specific moment in time whereeverything either went bad or good; it can be to tell youabout people, politics, culture, art, places and society ingeneral it can be to express yourself. In modern times, spray paint and marker pens have become commonlyused graffiti materials, and there are many differenttypes and styles of graffiti. It is a rapidly developing art form.Akansha Pandey, TY BMM Journalism, Pillai College

In a city like Navi Mumbai what would be the best wayto make art reach its people or make the people come tothe fascinating art, other than by putting it out there onits streets. As people become more accepting of street artand wall graffiti, these cities in India are on the fore-front when it comes to pioneering this movement that isset to transform them into a creative resort of sorts. Becoming mother isone of the greatest expe-riences of a woman’slife. The moment childenters in one’s life; itbrings the eternal feel-ing of bliss, happiness, and lots of responsibili-ties which mother loveto bear, breastfeedingbeing foremost in this.In addition to the emo-tional benefits it confers, breastfeeding has arange of benefits on of-fer for the overall well-being and proper devel-opment of baby both inshort term and longterm.

At the turn of themillennium, most of thewomen belong to edu-cated families and there-fore are moving to oth-er cities thereby livingin nuclear families andwith no much supportfrom the elderly mem-bers of the family. It iseven more important fornew mother’s to knowhow to breastfeed andavoid some of the mis-takes which in returnwill affect the health ofthe baby. UNICEF esti-mates that if moremother’s breastfed ex-clusively for at least 6months (preferably fol-lowed by at least 2 yearsof breastfeeding withcomplementary foods),over a million livescould be saved everyyear. Currently, only39% of babies worldwideare breastfed exclusive-ly for at least 6 months, which is why efforts tonormalize breastfeedingand support lactationeducation is essential.

Common Breastfeedingmistakes

Breastfeeding is themost natural thing inthe world, but make nomistake: Nursing is alearned art for momsand babies. Lactationconsultants are trainedto teach mothers how tofeed their baby. Theyhelp women experienc-ing breastfeeding prob-lems, such as latching

difficulties, painful nurs-ing, and low milk pro-duction.

Have you experiencednot being able to fullybreastfeed your baby? It’s painful. And perhapsyou secretly wish that itwon’t happen again withyour next baby.

But, have you ana-lyzed what has gonewrong? What mistakesdid you make, or thingsthat you can fix to make‘next time’ better? Hereare some of the tips forsolving these commonbreastfeeding mistakes, and you’ll be successful-ly nursing your newbornin no time.

(a) Mis-manage-ment during the firstweek: An average of 30% babes may not be suc-cessful in effective suck-ling between 72 to 96 hrsof their first feed. Themothers tend to provideartificial milk because ofmis-management ofbreastfeeding during thefirst week that leadsthem into ‘lactation fail-ure’. Recommendation toprevent lactation failureis, for mothers to expressher milk every 3 hourstill her baby is able toeffectively suckle.

(b) Feeding baby atmother’s conveniencebased on regular/fixedtiming. This can lead tobaby to early weaning.Solution: Feed on de-mand any time of the dayor night.

(c) Providing paci-fier to the baby. : Thiscan lead to ‘breast feed-ing failure’. Solution:Avoid pacifiers.

(d) Not surroundedby supportive spouse /family OR they have noidea how to give correctsupport : Your familyloves you and your babyso much. I can assurethat for sure. They alsorespect your decision tobreastfeed the baby. Butwithout knowledge, howwould they be able tosupport you the correctway.

Pay attention to yourfood and drink. A newmother should have asnutritious food as possi-ble to nourish your body, and subsequently your

baby. Stay hydrated anddrink enough liquid.Water, juice, milk, what-ever. A normal adultneeds in average 3 litersof water to drink per day.And now your body isworking hard to produceprecious milk for yourbaby. So, drink evenmore! Don’t let yourbusy schedule of takingcare of your newbornprevent you from havinghealthy meals. BreastAbscess is very painful, causing swelling andpressure on the milkducts. This can lead toa surgical procedure.

Parents: Here arethings to know aboutBreastfeeding

Being a parent is adaunting task in itself, and being a mother sure-ly intensifiesthe panickedanticipationsby tenfold. While you con-jure possibleitineraries tomake sure yourbaby gets thebest care, knowing every-thing aboutyour changingbody should fea-ture on the topof that list.

Often lack of knowl-edge and guidance leavesa new mother helplesstackling this breastfeed-ing issue which is so cru-cial for the healthygrowth of the baby. Nurs-ing a newborn also de-mands certain skills andtechniques to providecomfort and satisfactionfor both the mother andthe child.

(a) Early skin toskin contact: Soon afterthe delivery, baby shouldbe handed over to themother for skin to skincontact. This will helpthe baby to suckle effec-tively within the firsthour of the birth. Earlynursing improves bond-ing and attachment be-tween mother and child. This will also reduce hy-poglycemia (low sugarlevel) and hypothermia(less than the normaltemperature) for thebaby. The skin to skintouch will increase the

oxytocin hormone level, which will help themother to bring herpulse and blood pressureto normal levels. Ithelps the mother tocalm down and feel com-forted. This will causeincrease in milk produc-tion also.

(b) Golden hourfeed : The breastfeedingneeds to be initiatedwithin an hour of birth. This is known as the‘golden hour feed’. If ba-bies are not allowed tosuckle at the breast dueto medical issues, al-teast ‘colostrums paint-ing’ should happen.Taking few drops of firstmilk of the mother andapplying it on the lips ofthe newborn is knownas colostrums painting.

The ‘goldenhour’ momentof the breastfeeding isa c h i e v e dthough the in-fant is not per-mitted to suckdue to unfortu-nate medicalcondition. Thisc o l o s t r u m sprovides need-ed immuno-logical factors.

(c) Correct posi-tioning and correctlatching : Lack of knowl-edge to position andlatch the baby to thenipple will lead to pain-ful feeding. This willalso lead to cracked nip-ples and these crackswill lead to mastitis.(Breast infection).

(d) Front Milk :Every mother shouldknow that one breasthas to be emptied at atime. This will help ingood weight gain for thechild. Emptying thebreast will avoid thebaby drinking only frontmilk which is also called‘foremilk’ that containsvery less fat and protein. The hind milk contentis high in fat. This hindhelps the baby to gainweight.

(e) S w i t c h i n gBreasts: Lactose intol-erance may occur in in-fants when the motherswitches breast due tothe non-feeding breast

that leaks often. Lactoseintolerance arises whena baby only feeds‘foremilk’.

Breastfeeding helpsprevent postpartumhemorrhage. Researchhas shown that skin-to-skin contact and breast-feeding after birth hassuch an effect on post-partum bleeding thatwomen who did not haveskin-to-skin breastfeed-ing immediately postpar-tum were almost twice aslikely to experience post-partum hemorrhage.Benefits of Breastfeeding

Breast milk containsantibodies that help yourbaby fight off virusesand bacteria. Breastfeed-ing lowers your baby’srisk of having asthma orallergies. Plus, babieswho are breastfed exclu-sively for the first 6months, without any for-mula, have fewer ear in-fections, respiratory ill-nesses, and bouts of di-arrhea.

(a) Early and fre-quent breastfeeding: Oneof the outcomes of re-search is the ‘early andfrequent breastfeeding’technique. This benefitsthe mother in manyways, such as, uterinecontractions, expulsion ofthe placenta and modu-lates blood loss.

(b) Early removal ofmilk through nursingdiminishes maternalbreast engorgement andstimulates breast milksynthesis

(c) Early breast-feeding also helps theneonate to a powerfulsuckling reflex. It pro-vokes peristalsis (move-ment in the intestine) inthe newborn’s digestivetrack. This is importantfor the removal of hae-moglobin by-productsand reduce the risk ofJaundice.

(d) Counselling aNew Mother : The lacta-tion consultants’ prima-ry role in assisting thenew mother is to teachthe new skill of nursing.

(e) Breakthroughin number of ‘BreastAbscess’ : A steep fall inthe last 3 years from 20%to 3 % of surgical proce-dures for breast abscess

have been seen duringmy period of consulta-tions at Clould 9 Hospi-tals. This is due tocounselling and teachingthe mother about ‘goodpositioning’ and ‘correctlatch’ techniques.

(f) Encouraging‘breast crawl’ soon afterthe birth of the baby willhelp the baby to sucklewell at the breast early.Research say, that thesebabies are breast fed forlonger periods.

A Weekly guide for -Breastfeeding Mothers

Breastfeeding can bechallenging at times, especially in the earlydays. But it is impor-tant to remember thatyou are not alone. Lac-tation consultants aretrained to help you findways to make breast-feeding will work foryou. In addition, whilemany women arefaced with one or moreof the challenges but atthe same time manywomen do not struggle atall! Also, many womenmay have certain prob-lems with one baby thatthey don’t have withtheir second or thirdbabies.

• Week 1 : Babyshould be breastfed with-in 2 hours and on de-mand. This will help toreduce ‘new born’ Jaun-dice and will increaselost weights. This ‘fre-quent feeding’ helps themother to reduce fromengorged breast and toincrease the lactation

• Week 2 – 6 weeks :Baby is fed only on de-mand and sleeping pat-tern can run to 4 to 5hours in a stretch. At theend of the week 1, milkwill be ‘mature’.

• After 6 weeks to 6months : The feedingtime and suckling timeof babies will reducegradually. Expectedweight gain should be700 gms to 1 kg permonth during this peri-od.

Evolving business models of co-working in IndiaConducive and pro-

ductive workspaceshave become the need ofthe hour when it comesto providing the rightenvironment to employ-ees and helping themfoster growth. With theintroduction of cowork-ing spaces and their ex-pansive acceptance inthe country, the indus-try has changed notionsabout what a typicalworkspace is and whatthe functions of ahealthy work environ-ment should be. Whereearlier the industry wasless agile to the chang-ing market and demo-graphic forces, it is nowunderstanding and in-corporating elementsthat can expand andcontract operationsquickly and give a rangeof options to its work-force.

The coworking seg-ment in India has seenimpressive growth inrecent years and is nowa catalyst of sorts formodern workspaces.Growth has been wit-nessed in the number ofoperators as well as theflexible space take-up intop seven cities of India. The growing popularityof coworking spaces canbe seen by the spike inshare of coworking intotal office leasing. Theshare of coworking intotal office leasingspiked up to 14% in2019 from 8% in 2018.

The growth in thesector is attributable tothe rapid scaling up ofexisting players and en-try of new ones with in-

novative business mod-els. There has beenadoption of innovationand hybrid offerings bythe coworking operators.Their networkingevents, community ini-tiatives and creative de-signs promote a sense ofcommunity and encour-age collaboration. Theflexibility intertwinedwith superlative amen-ities and a communitydriven ecosystem areattracting occupiers tocoworking spaces. These spaces offerunique facilitiessuch as gymnasi-ums, creche servic-es, food courts etc.that is makingthem popular.Who all are occupy-

ingthe available space?

Apart fromSMEs and start-upswho look for cost effec-tive and flexible options, coworking spaces havebeen gaining tractionamongst large corpo-rates too, due to the pos-itive impact of suchworkspaces on employ-ee productivity. A surveyby JLL showed that 40-45% of coworking de-mand emanated frombig corporates, followedby SMEs which contrib-uted to 35-40% and 15-25% demand came fromstart-ups.

Several corporatesare now moving into co-working spaces to pro-vide an appealing workenvironment to theiremployees and flexibleleasing, along with add-ed membership benefits

that reduce the expens-es of running an officespace by approximately15-20%. Coworkingspaces provide a holisticapproach which con-sciously and cost-effec-tively aims to addressthe employee engage-ment and real estateneeds of all companies, big and small, as wellas real estate ownersand landlords.

Slow but gradualacceptance

It is interesting tonote that the global sen-timent with regard tocoworking has had alimited impact on thegrowth of this segmentin India so far. Cowork-ing business models inIndia are evolving con-sidering the altering re-quirements of the pro-spective occupiers. Op-erators are shiftingtheir focus by offeringmore closed office spac-es and fixed seats as op-posed to hot desks tocater to corporate’s needfor privacy and businessperformance. The trendis gaining popularity asthe majority of the de-mand from occupiers isfor cabins or closed spac-es that have dedicated

areas exclusively for thecompanies who havetaken the space fromthe operator.

Hybrid spaces are awin-win concept for allthe stakeholders as thismodel is benefitting boththe operators and theoccupiers. Co-workingoperators get the advan-tage of securing rela-tively longer term com-mitments on leases andtherefore create a morestable ecosystem for

their businesses. On theother hand, occupiersenjoy dual advantage ofthe flexibility of a co-working space alongwith private offices anddedicated spaces.

Another conceptthat is gaining popular-ity is the built-to-suitcentres in which cust-omised office space asper the requirement ofclients is being devel-oped. The trend of ‘Man-aged Offices’ is gainingpopularity. In this mod-el, the co-working oper-ators undertake real es-tate planning for theirclients by searching asuitable space for themaccording to their re-quirements, refurbish-ing/developing the space

as per their specifica-tions and managing thespace entirely for theirclients. The operatorsmeet all the real estaterequirements of the oc-cupiers including man-aging cafeterias, recep-tion & concierge servic-es, conference rooms, in-ternet lines, power back-ups, security etc.

Co-working opera-tors are adapting theirspace according to theneeds of occupiers. They

are providing multipleoptions to occupiersranging from entirebuildings dedicated toco-working spaces to co-working offices withinconventional work envi-ronments. As the co-working players havestarted to lease largerspaces, the average sizeof transactions in theco-working segment in-creased from 52,000 sq.ft. (2018) to 69,000 sq.ft. in 2019.A new kind of expansion

is already underwayMoreover, cowork-

ing operators are notlimiting themselves tooffice complexes but ex-panding their horizonsbeyond and venturinginto shopping malls,

hotels and metro sta-tions, as well. The hugepotential of this sectoris attracting institu-tional investment andthis in turn is further-ing growth. Invest-ments and acquisitionsare not just driving geo-graphical expansion, but also aiding techno-logical augmentation, upgradation of ameni-ties and an increase inthe client base.

Landlords and de-velopers have also rea-lised the potential of co-working spaces as re-puted brands workingout of such spaces alsoadd to the value propo-sition of the building.Companies are nowchoosing to opt for co-working spaces as theyare having more flexi-ble lease terms, con-temporary ecosystem, lower deposit require-ments, absence of capi-tal expenditure andhelp in overall cost re-duction in case of thecompany’s cash flow.

The positive impactthat co-working spaceshave had on employeeproductivity for corpo-rates and the health ofcommercial real estatefor developers cannot beignored. Co-working asa segment is expectedto expand significantlyacross several indus-tries and sectors due toa multitude of leasingoptions and an ocean ofchoices that are madeavailable, tailored to in-dividuals as well assmall and large organ-isations.
