Lifetime Achievement AwardsMargaret Hughes

Margaret began her nurse training in 1969 following in the footsteps of her paternal grandfather and her mother. She qualified as Registered Mental Health Nurse in December 1972 and worked in acute mental health nursing – in her first months helping to set up West Bank – the first mental health day centre in the county. Promoted to ward sister in 1973 she worked on acute mental health wards until 1987 when she became a nursing officer for acute mental health wards. She was instrumental in reducing and then abolishing the use of seclusion within the service. In 1990 she became Senior Nurse and Service Manager for older people with mental health problems and worked with the Clinical Director to form the EMI Directorate – one of the first in mental health services across the region. She oversaw a number of longer stay wards transferring to the community hospitals and helped establish a strong service for older people in Shropshire and Telford and Wrekin.

Margaret has seen many changes in mental health nursing – from numerous inpatient wards of up to 50 patients, no privacy, limited medication, poor staffing levels, no access to psychological services and no community services. In Margaret’s own words she is pleased that there have been huge improvements in the range of treatments available to service users, significant increases in staffing and that mental health services now have a much higher profile.

Most recently, Margaret came back to the Trust from retirement to become the Operational Commissioning Manager for The Redwoods Centre.

I am sure you will agree that Margaret has had an immense impact on mental health services in Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin over 44 years.

Dr Keron Fletcher

Keron was described by his Chemistry teacher as a terrible student, who said he was “almost, but not quite, a mental cripple” A bit harsh considering he later graduated from the University of Birmingham in 1974 with a 1st in Biological Sciences. This was followed by medical training where he was first smitten by psychiatry. Keron then trained in General Practice in Germany with the Royal Air Force and was the Doctor attached to 31 Squadron, nuclear strike force Jaguars. A particular notable event in Keron’s service and psychiatric career was in 1991 when he flew to Damascus to collect and then debrief the first British hostage taken by Hezbollah in Beirut – John Mcarthy. He was then seconded to US State Dept for debrief of Terry Anderson, longest held American hostage. In 1994 Keron left the RAF to become the first full time Addiction Psychiatrist in Shropshire and here some of his career highlights have been:• Developing the first community alcohol

team in Shropshire.• Establishing supervised consumption

service in Shropshire which led to a reduction in methadone death rate in opiate dependent patients.

• Becoming the West Midlands Regional Representative for Addictions Psychiatry.

• Establishing the first Specialist Drug Service in Powys, mid-Wales.

• Becoming a fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatrists and given a National Award for Clinical Excellence.

• Developing clinical aspects of innovative technology to remotely monitor and support alcohol dependent patients at home who are prescribed medication to ensure abstinence

• and latterly providing clinic support to the charity Combat Stress, treating military veterans with post traumatic stress disorder.

Congratulations to Dr Fletcher on an outstanding lifetime dedicated to clinical care.
