About Spain and Portugal
AIST Tour of Spain and Portugal: Here is some additional information on the cities you will visit on this tour.
More details can be found online at www.frommers.com.
Lisbon: Bathed in pure Atlantic light, crowned by the storybook St. George's Castle and straddling seven hills,
Lisbon is one of Europe's most visually striking capitals. Looks aside, the city will surely win you over with its
genuine friendliness and blissfully laid-back pace. At once nostalgic and progressive, Lisbon's charm shines through
in everyday life -- listening to the mournful fado songs in the Moorish Alfama's alleys, indulging in custard tarts in
gilded Art Nouveau patisseries and living it up at a Bairro Alto street party.
Things to Do: Nothing says Lisbon like a ride on century-old tram 28, which trundles past stately plazas, Estrela
Basilica's graceful dome and the Romanesque Sé Cathedral. Jump off at hilltop St George's Castle for a rampart
stroll and views reaching to the Tagus River. Just steps away, the Moorish Alfama quarter's mazy lanes are full of
laundry billowing, neighbors gossiping and melancholic fado songs. Down by the river, Jerónimos Monastery's
fantastically ornate Manueline cloisters whisk you back to Portugal's Age of Discovery.
Costa Brava, the so-called "Wild Coast," is a 153km (95-mile) stretch of coastline -- the northernmost
Mediterranean seafront in Spain -- beginning north of Barcelona at Blanes and stretching toward the French border.
Visit this area in May, June, September, or October, and avoid July and August, when tour groups from northern
Europe book virtually all the hotel rooms.
Girona is one of the most important historical sites in Spain. Later, it became a Moorish stronghold. Later still, it
reputedly withstood three invasions by Napoleon's troops (1809). For that and other past sieges, Girona is often
called "the City of a Thousand Sieges."
Split by the Onyar River, this sleepy medieval city attracts crowds of tourists darting inland from the Costa Brava for
the day. For orientation purposes, go to the ancient stone footbridge across the Onyar. From here, you'll have the
finest view. Bring good walking shoes, as the only way to discover the particular charm of this medieval city is on
foot. You can wander for hours through the Call, the labyrinthine old quarter, with its narrow, steep alleyways and
lanes and its ancient stone houses, which form a rampart chain along the Onyar.
Barcelona: A Gothic and Modernist marvel on the Mediterranean Sea, Barcelona is quirky, cosmopolitan and
effortlessly cool. This city breathes life: from chefs foraging for fresh produce in La Boqueria Market at the crack of
dawn to partygoers leaving El Born's pulsating clubs around the same time. Pause for a minute, and discover
Barcelona's real charm in small details -- the hidden courtyards of Barri Gòtic, the light catching Sagrada Família's
wax-like turrets -- all coming together to make the Catalan capital one of Spain's most livable and loveable cities.
