Parallel Port/Printer Port/LPT Port (LPT=Line Printer Terminal)

• Port which allow one byte at a time.• 25 pin female port to connect printer, scanner & external

devices.

40 Pin Connector

• On Mother Board there are two 40 pin connector to connect Hard Disk(HD), CD-ROM Drive, CD-R/W Drive.

• Through single 40 pin connector, we can connect 2 devices.

CPU Socket/ZIF Socket(ZIF-Zero Insertion Force)

• CPU socket on motherboard is used to mount central processing unit this slot is also called ZIF. A ZIF socket contains a number on it which is asked to identify motherboard easily. According to CPU socket umber, we find out the type of Mother Board.– Socket7,8 - PI– Slot 1 - PII– PGA 370 - PIII– PGA423 & PGA478 - PIV– PGA418 & PGA611 - Itanium

RAM Slots

• Used to fixed the RAM card.• RAM is also called as work space or place of

CPU.• It also called a DIM slot. (DIMM=Dual inline

Memory Module Slots)

Expansion Slots• Expansion slots on motherboard are used to extend the advantage of PC. We can

mount add on cards like NIC. Mode and AGP card on motherboard. (NIC=Network Interface Card)

• It extended the capability of computers.

Power Connections from SMPS to Device

• There are two types of SMPS Power connections.– AT SMPS– ATX SMPS

• AT SMPS– Has 6+6 = 12 pin connector from SMPS to Mother Board.– The power supply connector having written P8 & P9.– While connecting P8 & P9 connector from SMPS to mother board

black colors wire of P8 & P9 connector’s co-inside each other.

• ATX SMPS– It comes with 20 pins single connector. i.e. P1 Connector from

SMPS to Motherboard.

Molex connector

• Power supply connector, used to connect form SMPS to HD is called as Molex connector.

Mini connector

• Power supply connector, used to connect form SMPS to Floppy Disk is called as Mini connector.

Audio Port

• An audio port on a computer is any receptacle or jack to which an audio device such as speakers, headphones or a microphone can be connected

GIGA LAN Port

• GigaLAN is the one of the highest performance unshielded twisted pair (UTP) cables available today. construction isolates the pairs throughout the length of the cable, while providing an enhanced pair to pair balance for superior crosstalk, LCL and LCTL performance.

CMOS Battery • Complementary metal-oxide semiconductor,

or CMOS, typically refers to a battery-powered memory chip in your computer that stores startup information. Your computer's basic input/output system (BIOS)uses this information when starting your computer.

Page 18: Ports of Mother Board

CMOS Error & Solution• Incorrect computer date and time settings. Also, the

date/time keep getting reset even after you fix them in the BIOS. This is the most common CMOS battery failure sign.

• Your PC occasionally turns off or doesn’t start. Sign -3 Drivers stop working.

• You may start to get errors while booting that say something like “CMOS checksum error” or “CMOS read error”.

• Some weird hardware issues such as your computer not being able to locate the mouse, keyboard, or printer

• Replace The CMOS Battery.
