ObjectiveMake a company or organization practice sustainability in numerous camps.

SolutionThe Academy of Art University is a pioneering school for graphic design sustainabilty. Yet, the school itself is not despite being in the most eco-friendly city in the United States. Therefore, I studied biomimicry and decided to create an idea about a new graphic design building that is grown, not built. I posed myself as a member of Terrform One, an organization from New York that specializes in grown buildings. The building would actu-ally be a living tree structure to inspire future generations of designers. ObjectiveCreate book that uses experimental type. Topic of our own choosing.

SolutionAt the time, my apartment was covered in plants and I liked the idea of cleaner indoor air. I researched what plants made healthier breath-able air. Then, I wondered what other plants were helpful and sought them out. This book is about growing or buying plants that can replace toxic, expensive, or non-ecofriendly household practices. I created my own type through planting and growth.

How plants can improve your home and life This book describes how plants can be a natural remedy to solving problems around the house without using harsh chemicals. It also shows the financial and health benefits in various categories such as heating and cooling, indoor air pollution, pest control, and more. It also lists what types of plants work best and how to take care of them.

ObjectiveResearch a topic the entire semester related to science and create a magazine.

SolutionBiology, Zoology, Herpetology, any science related to animals is my favorite. When I had to pick a science related topic for this project, I chose marine biology. I work in the education department at an aquarium and often teach kids about plankton. I thought a magazine devoted to microscopic life was a worthwhile endeavor. I made this issue about plankton.

The Reproductive Cycle of a Magazine Creating a magazine is a lot like the reproductive cycle of a sea jelly. A nugget of a thought is much like the embryo state, just waiting to be born. However, it grows up to be a planula larvae once it is thought out a little longer. Finally, it will stick onto something and begin to branch out into other pos-sibilities in the Syphistoma phase. It matures into a company of ideas and possibilites that can even create more offspring for 20 years or more in the Strobila stage. Designs are created in the Ephyra phase and the large floating plankton we know as sea jellies is the magazine completely designed and printed for an audiences enjoyment. From this mature speciemen, a nugget embyro will begin the process again.

The mission of this magazine is to celebrate micro organisms and the amazing scientifi c ability to see them. There is a whole new world in the nano life that is yet to be explored and admired. This fi rst issue is about plankton and the importance of their existence. Other issues yet to come will consist of bacteria, plant cells, and viruses.

The fi rst issue will come with a micro-scope box and each issue will consist of 3 slides per issue with actual slides of the specifi c topic involved. This issue has 3 slides of plankton for the reader to enjoy with their home microscopes for a better view and understanding of the subject matter.

Let the microscopic wonder take over.

ObjectivePick a subject matter to study for about a month. Record data and design it in any medium.

SolutionI did research and spoke to a scientist about bats that live in San Francisco. I read Jennifer Krauel’s thesis that gave me clues on how and where to conduct my own reasearch. I chose a select location and documenting the bat behaviors. I wanted others to experience the bat watching so I made a bat watching kit with a book, audio, video, shirt, bug spray, and a bag to put it all in.

Urban Bat GuideThis book is a guide to bat watching in San Francisco. It includes basic bat information, species profiles for all the bats found in this area, my own personal bat data, and a part to fill in your own. This book aims to get people involved with local bats in a safe setting and debunk the myths surrounding them.

What you need to reserach batsBats are tricky creatures to view for yourself. They only come out in specific areas and feed at twilight. In order to see plenty of them in flight, you have to deal with being completely surrounded by their food source: bugs! Since we don’t want to be a bug’s dinner, it’s important to protect ourselves in bug spray. However, it is equally important that it isn’t harmful to the bats that plan on eating them. This is an organic spray that is safe for us and the bats too!

ObjectiveResearch a topic the entire semester and create a final book of your findings.

SolutionDuring this time period, there was rumors going around that San Francisco will make composting and recycling mandatory. Being eco-friendly, I was very happy to hear about this possibility. I decided to do more research on the topic and get other people’s opinions. My views ended up shifting from pro-law to anti-law. My final book shows alternative solutions to the waste problem.

An Invitation to Discuss Recycling PoliciesIn order to get an educated opinion on the matter, I needed to seek out other people’s ideas about mandatory composting and recycling. This is the audience that would be affected by such law changes. I delved into their backgrounds and where they came from. They are all local San Francicians now and would have to deal with the laws of the city. I decided to test their recycling and compost knowledge to see whether they can be rewarded or fined for their actions.

96

Gathering the Main Ideas After researching, experiementing, conduct-ing discussions, and other various research methods, I finally came down with three main camp ideas. They are as follows: Educa-tion, Innovation, and Communication. I put pieces of information I found most crucial in each can. It could have been a quote from the discussion, an inspiring photograph, or important information on each topic.

ObjectiveChoose a company that is close to going out of business or is out of business. Rebrand.

SolutionI was devasted to find out that Zoo New England was close to shutting it’s doors due to lack of funding. It comprises two zoos: Stone Zoo and Franklin Park Zoo, all around the Boston area. There were rumors that animals would need to be euthanisized if they were not transported to new homes. I wanted to find a way to rebrand the zoo to save the animals and the amazing zoos.

ZOO

Puzzle Piece the Logo TogetherMany types of organisms make up a zoo. There are mammals, birds, amphibians, reptiles, birds, insects, and even plants! How can a logo represent all of the amazing creatures a zoo can house? My solution was to make an icon for each type and piece them together. The logo has the ability to change and even add or subtract pieces as well.

UniformsInspired by my own place of work, I created a uniform system to disguish husbandry workers to their specific animals. Reptiles are bright green. Mammals are orange. They reflec the pieces of the logo in terms of color and how that color represents the type of animal it is.

A Live Presentation in ClassUsing my own personal pet turtle that is a local species to New England, I gave a presentation of this species as if I was a real zoo worker. I doned a name tag and the proper uniform for a reptile specialist. During my presentation, I talked about the new changes occuring at the zoo I work at as well as information about Eatern Painted turtles. Everyone was allow to touch the turtle very gently and one special volunteer got to feed him some worms!

ObjectiveChoose a movie director to create a fictiional film festival in his or her honor.

SolutionGuillermo Del Toro is an excellent movie director who has a fascination for monsters. More importantly, he is passionate about marine life and would have become a marine biologist if he was not making movies. This film festival is about the celebration of monsters. The monsters in his films are actually not evil despite their looks. They’re misunderstood creatures much like sharks, bats, and snakes.

Logo for the Film FestivalThe title of the film festical is called Dissection of Darkness: What makes a monster in the films of Guillermo Del Toro. I used dissection tools as inspiration for the logo. The scissors became the tool of choice and morphed into a piece with dark characteristics of ambiguity. This film festival is about literal and meta-phorical dissection of Del Toro’s movies and his characters.

The Things I do for Del ToroJust like in a movie, you can tell when some-thing has been faked. This is why I new I needed to have real blood to represent Blade. I was rattling my brain about how I could obtain it without making myself a martyr. A Chinese friend told me that there was a pork blood gelatin I could purchase at a Chinese food store. After learning how to ask for it Chinese, I picked up a pound and worked on turin the gelatin form back into a liquid again. I filled a test tube and glass jar full. It was a messy, smelly, and horrific busi-ness. At one point, the test tube shattered and rotten pork blood splatter my face, clothing, and walls. It was the most stomach-wrenching experience in my entire design career. Hence, the title: “The Things I do for Del Toro.”

Photo treamentI turned into a film director and producer myself. I set a stage in my very own living quarters. I found marine objects or other objects that symbolized the characters in the movies. The nautical shell has the same pat-tern as Abe Sapien’s skin. The red coral mimic Hellboy’s horns. The red ribbon or embalming fluid is the ghost of The Devil’s Backbone. The spiral fossil is the horn shape of the Fawn in Pan’s Labrynth. Red blood from a pig was used to represent the vampire’s thirst of Blade. Then, the photos had to be treated much like Del Toro’s films. They had to look fantasy-like with dark undertones. It had to look sophisticated, old, and mysterious. This is the transformation.

A Closet Barry Manilow FanIn Hellboy II, Abe Sapien listens to (and sings with Hellboy) the song: Can’t Smile Without You by Barry Manilow. Upon further research, I found out the Guillermo Del Toro is a closet Manilow Fan. Here, I have the soundtrack in a test tube form USB. Plug it into your computer and one part has instrumental music from the movies and the other half is all Barry Manilow songs. Can’t Smile Without lyrics are included so you can sing along with Abe Sapien!

AcknowledgementEven though my name is plastered all over this book, I really didn’t do this on my own. Like any design process, it takes a team! Thank you to my teachers for pushing me into greatness even when I clawed my way. Thank you to my classmates for the moral support and helpful peer critiques. Thanks to my non-design friends who were sym-pathetic to my cause even without knowing what it is like to design. Thank you to my family for believing in me ever since I was a baby (when my favorite toy was paper!). Thanks to the scientists and animal special-ists that educated me about the amazing animals I am designing about. Lastly, I want to thank all the organisms large or small that inspire me everyday.
