I am currently finishing my studies in architecture at Aalto University in Helsinki, but I have a background in art, creative writing and language studies from Helsinki University. I have also studied architecture at the École nationale supérieure d’architecture in Montpellier, France. Vuoden ensikuukausien kuluessa aurinko lähenee lämmittäen maata ja lumiset pinnat vetäytyvät kesän lupauksen edellä.

Olomuodot muuttuvat: jää haurastuu ja vettä syntyy sen sisään muodostaen onkaloita ja ilmataskuja. Neste kiertää ja vapauduttuaan

kiinteästä se haihtuu osaksi ilmoja.

Vuodenaikojen ja olomuotojen innoittamana halusimme luoda tilasarjan saunalle, joka ilmentää näiden muutosta. Kuten faasien välissä,

tämäkin tila on vakiintunutta mutta samalla epäsäännöllistä ja vapaata. Sula on lempeä tilan johdatus siltaa pitkin tupaan,

josta se vapautuu aaltoillen auringon syleiltäväksi lahden ääreen.

Offshore sauna

Small scale sauna and leisure building

The inspiring canvas for this project was the serene archipelago landscape and fascinating military history of the small island Suomenlinna just outside of Helsinki. In the context of using all wood structures, we wanted to use traditional construction methods in a way that felt fresh and interesting.

The strict outside facade is clad in wooden laths and alterates between opaque and transparent, awakening the interest of the beholder without revealing too much. A contrast is created by the small courtyard on the inside of the boxlike building. Here, the perpendcular laths shape a softly curved private terrace for the bather.

The project was made in collaboration with Anna Tuononen.

This project was done for a private client who wanted to convert an old wood storage building into two two-storey apartments. The challenge with this particular project was that the environment was historically significant and therefore the facades were protected from any invasive remodelling. The client wished to make the most out of the sheds square meters and so a very compact but practical floor plan solution was chosen.

Tapiola apartments16 diverse apartments in Espoo

The project started as a collaboration in a group of eight students, dividing a block into eight apartment buildings with shared exterior spaces and underground parking. Studying the usage of and transitions between public, semi-private and private spaces was essential.

The work resulted in a five-storey apartment building with common spaces such as study halls, terrace and sauna on the ground and fifth floors. The apartments ranged from studios to 200 m2 two-floor shared student housing. Dark brick and wood panelling were used as contrasting facade materials.

How should we handle a village in regression? It’s a complicated phenomenon and a widespread problem in most parts of rural Finland. Young people are moving to bigger cities in search of education and employment, leaving the rural communities with an unsustainable demographic of retired or unemployed habitants. How should this phenomenon be prevented - or should it be prevented at all? Could changing the infrastructure of a shrinking town prevent it from disappearing from the map?

Oasis city

Living on the canal

Set in a near future where the island Hevosluoto in Pori is a part of a more urban district, this project explored the possibilities of creating an area where the presence of the river is strong, while still keeping to the Finnish regulation system.

The main concept was to let a canal be the uniting force of the district and placing the hybrid apartment block around it, with a small island of public services (sauna, park, café and harbour) in the middle. The inside of the area is accessible only by foot, bicycle or boat, which contributes to the serene quality of the environment.

The idea of a jazz club in Pori was born from the annual Pori Jazz festival that attracts music fans from all over Finland. In addition to the concert auditoriums, the program for the building included workspaces and a studio for the musicians, a restaurant, office space and a music school for children.

The design of the bulding was inspired by the bearing structure of an existing storage hall on the site. I chose to preserve this concrete structure and suspend a triangle cassette shell that made out both the roof and the walls of the building, forming it into a cave-like shape. Stainless steel was chosen for the outside facade and plywood as a contrasting and acoustically beneficial inside cladding.

Is it possible to design a building made out of modules the size of containers that’s flexible yet cosy and visually pleasing and provides housing for 100 students? This project entailed developing a modular system that would mould into single person studios, multiple different small apartments as well as different types of common spaces.

The concept is simple. The whole building consists of twelwe module blocks that are accessible from staircases on both sides. All rooms have abundant daylight, either from the large gable windows or from in between the privacy increasing wooden laths on the long side. The concept is mouldable to make the building smaller or larger to meet the needs of the housing situation.

mOdule plan cOncept

All modules are based on the “Base module” (see previous page), and then interior walls and doors are added depending on the function of the specific module. In the double modules, two variations (A and B), are used to create a straight line of sight through both modules. The single module offers two separated spaces, one that is more private for resting and getting dressed and one that is filled with daylight for working and socializing. The double modules all have two private bedrooms of 10 m2, a kitchen/dining room and a liv-ing room. All rooms have abundant daylight. Doors that are not used as entry can be modeled into a french balcony. The common spaces include a spacious kitchen with dining room, laundry facilities with a cosy social room where residents can encounter each other, as well as a bathroom. Depending on the placement, windows can be of both clear (living room) and opaque (bathroom) glass.

Double modules are mostly placed on the edges of the building mass in order to assure sufficient daylight in all rooms, while single modules are placed in the middle of the building. There is one double module of common spaces for every stairway, and it is accessible from both sides. The ground floor has both double and single mod-ules available for residents with mobility restrictions.

The challenge of the project was its multifunctionality - how to make it a home, a public place to meet other people in the community as well as a workplace for nurses and doctors. In addition, all the functions had to be senior friendly, both for those that struggle with mobility and those that have problems with their memory.

To adress these issues, all public functions were placed on the ground floor, with an inner courtyard providing abundant daylight and easier orientation. Corridors were avoided to minimize the institutional atmosphere and make the building feel more like a home. The housing was placed in four six-story buildings, all connected to the ground floor spaces. The dividing of the housing into separate masses enables the sunlight to penetrate as much as possible. Large green areas are located on the ground floor, first floor and rooftop terraces, providing activities and a valuable meeting point both for temporary visitors and permanent residents.

This project was done for a studio called “Reuse of Buildings”, and it entailed developing a concept for an old out-of-use water plant in Espoo. I chose to transform it into a rehabilitation facility for young adults with substance abuse problems. The idea was that the building would continue to serve the community as a non-profit facility. The serene natural surroundings also provide a good environment to change destructive habits into a healthy lifestyle.

The architecture of the new concept made use of most of the old structures, including the old water basins that were left open, creating a visual contact between the housing area on the first floor to common areas on the ground floor. Large windows bring light into the deep structure and enforces the visual contact with the river on the south side. The facades had to be demolished to remove moisture and increase insulation, but the old brick facade material was recycled and refitted around the new wall openings.
