Annual Installation Dinner 2010
One of the highlights of our year is the Chamber’s Annual
Installation Dinner. It’s the perfect opportunity to thank our hard-
working and dedicated board members and committee chairs for their
exceptional contributions to our organization. On Thursday, June 17,
we’ll gather at Elkhorn Country Club to thank Rick Goucher, with CB
Richard Ellis Commercial Real Estate, for his outstanding performance
as 2009-2010 Chamber President. We will then welcome him back for
another term as our 2010-2011 President. The evening will include an
installation ceremony and presentation of awards.
No host cocktails begin at 6:00 p.m., followed by dinner
at 6:45 p.m. Reservations are required and space is limited.

“A” is for attitude.
I just returned to my desk from the 2010 State
of the City and would like to echo the words of
Mayor Ann Johnston. I too feel that Stockton is
long overdue to be placed on the “A” list of major
metropolitan areas. I was born in Stockton in 1953
and now choose to live here. I am employed by the
worlds largest commercial real estate company and
could relocate to almost any city in the world… I
choose to live in Stockton and plan to continue to
live in Stockton.
I believe it is time for Stocktonians to become
part of the solution instead of part of the problem.
I hear people complain about Stockton from time
to time and I can’t help but ask, why do you feel the
way you do about Stockton? The most common
From Your President...by: Rick Goucher
answer is, “I read it in the paper, I saw it in Forbes,
etc.” It disturbs me that citizens can be swayed by
what they read even if they have had nothing but
good experiences in Stockton.
The moral of the story is don’t let Forbes
or any other source tell you that you should be
miserable if you aren’t. I open many speeches
asking anyone that is miserable to raise their
hand…to date I have not seen one hand rise.
I would like to congratulate Dallas Braden
for the truly amazing feat of throwing a “Perfect
Game” on Mother’s Day. I would also like to
congratulate the Stockton Thunder on the
awesome season.
Remember shop local first and “one event a
week” is all I ask.
PORT CALL Greater Stockton Chamber of Commerce5
From Your CEO...by: Doug Wilhoit
So much good to write about with so little space to do it is
especially hard for a guy, (I will admit it) who cannot stop talking
about all the good things in and around our great community while
at the same time trying to rally the troops (residents) to stand up
and be counted instead of lounging on the sidelines complaining
without really getting out and experiencing what is so good and
trying to change what is not!
I have just returned from the State of the City held at our
region’s economic engine, the Port of Stockton, and before I
comment on the mayor’s positive presentation, let me take this
moment to thank Chamber staff members Heidi Altamirano and
(newlywed) Timm Quinn for a job well done. Thanks also go to our
partners the City of Stockton, the Port of Stockton Commissioners,
Port employees and Port Director (Past Chamber President )Rick
Aschieris, our sponsors, exhibitors, Outback Steak House, Gary
Hansen and of course all of you who attended.
I want to especially thank Mayor Johnston for having the
dedication and courage to stand up before the assembled citizenry
and the glare of the media to make a positive presentation while
working with citizens, city staff and her colleagues on the City
Council to find elusive and difficult answers to questions and
problems of which a majority have been caused by actions of others
far, far away from Stockton. When dealing within in City Hall you
are faced with the “trickle down syndrome,” bad and sometimes
stupid decisions of the Federal Government and State Government!
I could write the whole 24-30 pages Port O Call on the
failures of Washington and Sacramento of truly making good,
sound, practical and common sense decisions that affect all of us
here in Stockton but it would be a waste of time for those words
are not within the minds nor vocabulary of those in either Capitol
City! Let’s take food stamps for felons as just one tiny example of
rewarding bad behavior. This is a continuum of the California State
government, along with other actions of the Federal Government,
into shaping us as a society of “entitlement” and “not taking
personal responsibility for ones actions”!
Mayor Johnston is correct that the media has fully covered
the serious economic times we are in and in fact when the
Governor’s May rewrite comes out, which he will have made
public before you read this article, but after the State of the City,
things could, if possible be worse!
We at the Chamber fully support the Mayor’s call that ALL
of us must stand up for our city, like perfect game pitcher and
Stocktonian Dallas Braden (more on him in another paragraph),
against those who have little minds and relish in putting us down.
Let me remind you of my article last month when I let you know
that I had sent Bill O’Reilly a 9.5 pound package letting him
know we are not on a “canal” as he stated. His staff signed for the
package and yet has Mr. O’Reilly responded with an apology to
all Stocktonians? No, and I did not think he would! It is easy for
him to “opine,” as he likes to say, about personal responsibility of
one’s actions, but I guess what is “good for the goose is not good
for the gander.”
In August of 2008 I wrote in Port O Call the following: “I
have had the honor of being the CEO of your Chamber since July
of 1999. During that time I have written more than 130 columns.”
As you know the constant theme running through continued on page 21

Leadership Stockton Economy SessionLeadership Level Sponsor: Financial Center Credit UnionSession Sponsor: Hilton Stockton
Stockton’s economy is influenced by many factors. During the
annual Economy Session, the class got a glimpse of a few of those
factors and learned about the bright future ahead for Stockton.
The day began with a great breakfast hosted by the beautiful Hilton
Stockton. The first presenter of the day, Katie Patterson with the San
Joaquin Farm Bureau Federation (SJFB), was no stranger to Leadership
Stockton as she has spoken on agriculture and its impact on the economy
the last few years. She addressed current issues and recent successes, and
provided a glimpse of what lies ahead. She then turned it over to Phil
Brumley (LS Class of ’91), current President of the SJFB and local grower.
Phil talked about what he does as President and gave great insight on
what challenges local growers are facing. We look forward to continuing
and expanding our relationship with the SJFB in the future.
Following agriculture was the topic of tourism in Stockton, by none
other than former Leadership Stockton Program Coordinator and LS
Class of 2004 graduate Wes Rhea, Director of the Stockton Conference
and Visitors Bureau. Wes spoke about the new and exciting things
Stockton is doing to attract tourists, and more importantly, tourist dollars.
Next on the agenda was Fran Aguilera, Enterprise Zone
Administrator from the San Joaquin County Economic Development
Association. Fran discussed the recent expansion of the Enterprise
Zone and the benefits to both the community and businesses.
After lunch the class listened to Michael Duffy from Financial
Center Credit Union, LS Class of ’95, speak about the current recession,
what led up to the recession, and its effects on the local economy. It was
Economy 101 for the class.
After a tour of the newly remodeled Hilton Stockton from Colleen
Moreno, LS Class of ’08, the class heard frowm Donna DeMartino, LS
Class of ’03, and GM/CEO of the San Joaquin Regional Transit District
(RTD). Donna spoke about all the exciting things that RTD has done
over the past years and gave a glimpse into future plans.
Next month we recap the “Day at the Capitol” session to be held
on Thursday, May 20th at the State Capitol.

Admission Day on the first Saturday of each month. Beginning Saturday,
May 1, the museum will be open from noon through 5:00 p.m. on

Bustles & Balustrades Highlights Link Between Victorian Dress, Architecture
Rarely-seen items from Haggin Museum’s
historic clothing collection:
Following the success of last year’s
special exhibition Fashion Excavated,
The Haggin Museum’s historic clothing
collection will be the focus of this
summer’s special exhibition, Bustles &
Balustrades: The Link between Victorian
Dress and Architecture, on display May 20
through August 15.
Bustles & Balustrades will
investigate the relationship of Victorian
clothing to architecture and decorative
arts, compare elements of their
construction, and showcase a variety of
objects from the museum’s fine art and history collections.
Vignettes featuring clothing and objects from the museum’s
collections rarely seen by the public will be staged throughout the
gallery, highlighting the similarities of their design. One such gem
is the collection of watercolors by local artist Mabel Rubin, who
meticulously rendered many Victorian homes in Stockton. While
many of these grand homes have been torn down, a few remain as
testimony to the taste of the day.
Museum Information
The Haggin Museum is located in Stockton’s Victory Park at
1201 N. Pershing Avenue, and is open Wednesdays-Fridays 1:30-5:00

Fair Thee Wellby: Patricia Kutza
COVER STORY
150 years old and just getting better
1860…By a number of measures it was a year for the history
books. In Washington, D.C. Abraham Lincoln became the 16th US
President of a nation that then numbered about 31 million people.
In Britain, the iconic British Open launched at St. Andrew’s. And
in Stockton’s Hunter Square, a 4-day event called the San Joaquin
County Fair welcomed local residents to its inaugural display of
agricultural and mechanical exhibits.
Fast-forward 150 years
Fast forward to 2010. The 44th President of the United
States presides over a country that now has over 300 million
citizens. The British Open is still going strong. And in June, the
San Joaquin County Fair will open its doors for the 150th time.
Righteously so, this year’s Fair theme says it all – “Celebrating 150
years of good times.”
And what a good time it’s been. From its very beginning
the Fair has been closely tied to the heartbeat of the county – an
agricultural industry that has supported so many of its residents.
The fair features livestock shows, arts and crafts, great food,
entertainment and the chance for locals to get up to date with their
neighbors. It’s been a winning combination that keeps the crowds
coming year after year.
Offering something for everyone
This year will be no exception; crowds will return again to enjoy
this year’s 5-day extravaganza. “The 2010 Fair has something for
everyone” says Lea Isetti, the San Joaquin County Fair’s Marketing
and Promotions Manager. There will be all the iconic crowd
pleasers: cool carnival rides, floral gardens, a wide variety of arts and
crafts demonstrations, livestock judging, and live horse racing.”
PORT CALL Greater Stockton Chamber of Commerce15
Fair Thee Wellby: Patricia Kutza
New to the Fair this year, Isetti says, is the Community Cool
Zone, a shaded restful area that features hands-on, interactive
activities for kids - like kids tractor pulls, face painting and a ‘corn
dig’ where small treasure are buried in corn kernels.
The quality of the entertainment alone is well worth the
price of admission. This years’ headliners on the Main Stage will
include Jose Feliciano, Sawyer Brown, Kool & The Gang, Tower
of Power, and Lupillo Rivera. “We will also have a Community
Stage featuring the best of local talent throughout the day,” says
Isetti, “and at night a live band and a hypnotist will perform.” No
matter where fairgoers stray at the Fair, they will never be far from
entertainment, she says. “There will be a variety of ‘ground acts’
too, from petting zoos and marionettes, to clowns, balloon animals,
‘fables of the west’ and steel drum musicians.”
It’s a money-maker
The Fair has traditionally been an economic pipeline for San
Joaquin County – the 2009 Fair’s livestock auction alone grossed
close to $800,000, with 95% of this amount funneled directly to the
participating 4-H, Grange and Future Farmers of America youth.
Live racing provides another lucrative payback. And at least 500
employees can look forward to the yearly temporary jobs that
support the Fair’s operations. Additionally, a host of initiatives,
such as the Thelma Stewart Scholarship Program, the Adam Van
Exel Enterprise Grant Program and Junior Livestock and Schools

At 150 years old, the San Joaquin County Fair’s found the
magic formula. Give folks inspiration, entertainment, social
contact, and fun. And generation after generation, they’ll keep
coming back for more.

CEO Cont’d from pg. 6
all of them has been ”Stockton is a great community with many,
many positives and some negatives but if we are to improve and
get even better, EVERYONE must be part of the solution and if
not then you are part of the problem!” So the Mayor is RIGHT
ON, and your Chamber (and we invite you to do the same) will
work with her and the council to solve the problems caused from
within and without, and participate in all that is so good about our
home city of Stockton!
A very loud congratulations to Dallas (209) Braden! Much
has been written and the community had a chance to congratulate
and thank him on the weekend of May 22nd. Your Chamber
Board of Directors immediately, upon his historic victory, voted to
make him a Lifetime Honorary Member of the Greater Stockton
Chamber of Commerce and it’s No. 1 Ambassador. Also given to
him was our Stockton tabletop book with an appropriate brass
plate, congratulating him and thanking him for not only his love
of Stockton, but for also showing that life is made up of difficult
circumstances but if we put our heart, soul and mind to making
sure we can be the best we can as a person and/or a community
member the sky is the limit! Congratulations Mr. 209!
Two more positive notes of congratulations. The first going
to the Stockton Thunder for such a great season, and the second
congratulations to all those who either worked or attended the
25th Annual Asparagus Festival. As the Mayor noted in her
presentation the Festival is a shining example of what can be
done if we all work together!
Our cover story is honoring the 150–year–old San Joaquin
County Fair and hopefully you will not only read the story, but also
attend the Fair with friends and family alike. I enjoy it every year
and learn even more about our No. 1 one industry of Agriculture,
enjoy the entertainment, the corn dogs etc., and get to see many
friends that I do not get to see on a regular basis. Between the Fair
and the Asparagus Festival I get to also enjoy our diversity that
makes us a true all–America City. Try it, you will like it!.
