PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Dear Members of the Glen Waverley Primary School Community, Welcome to another very exciting and information packed newsletter! As usual so many marvellous things have occurred at our wonderful school over the past fortnight such as: Mother’s Day and the Mother’s Day Stall I take this opportunity to wish all of our mums a very happy Mother’s Day and I hope you have the chance to spend the day relaxing with family and friends. Also, a sincere thank you to all of the mums who assisted with the Mother’s Day stall. The children thoroughly enjoyed attending the stall and purchasing a gift for their mum, which would not have been possible if it wasn’t for the wonderful parents who assisted – thank you very much to all of you, your efforts are really appreciated! Also a special thank you to the Community Relations Committee for overseeing this very important school community event, once again your efforts are really appreciated! Education Week Education Week is one of the most exciting weeks in our school calendar as we celebrate the wonderful things occurring in Government schools. This year it will be held from Monday 22nd to Friday 26th May and the theme is “Healthy Body, Healthy Mind”. In order to further expose and enhance the STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics) components of our school curriculum we are asking that the children complete a home learning project which outlines an aspect of the theme through the use of STEAM. The projects will then be displayed during the Open Morning and Open Night which are planned for Wednesday 24th May.

A detailed notice about Education Week, with an accompanying timetable, has been prepared and will be distributed shortly. Please ensure you are aware of this and if you have any questions see your child’s classroom teacher, Mr de Villa, Mrs Gough or myself. I look forward to seeing the amazing STEAM projects and everyone at the various Education Week festivities. Facilities Update Our New Gymnasium – I am very pleased to report that the tender (quotation) process has now closed and we are now embarking on interviewing the shortlisted companies in order to select a builder. I hope to have additional information in our next newsletter. Multimedia Room cupboards – it is wonderful to see the additional resources the children have access to as they further enhance their understanding of robotics, coding and filming. However as all of the resources do not fit in the Multimedia room, we have had to construct additional cupboards to house them. Council of International Schools (CIS) Update As mentioned in the previous newsletter, as an Accredited Member of the CIS it is imperative that we support the development of other schools by partaking in their reviews. Mrs Gough recently spent an entire week at the British International School of Hanoi, Vietnam and she has written a fabulous piece to share with everyone. For the week commencing Monday 29th May, I will be at Malvern Primary School as they too embark on the accreditation process. In fact, for them it will be a re-accreditation. I look forward to sharing my experiences with everyone ASAP. Curriculum Day Update Wow what an amazing Curriculum Day we held last week! Neuroscientist Jared Cooney – Horvath presented a vast array of interesting and intriguing facts about our brain and how this impacts on our being, knowledge and existence. Please refer to Ms. Donald’s piece in the newsletter for further information.

Anuk (Year 5) was recently asked to partake in an episode of Debbie Doo which is aired on the ABC for Kids television show. Student Uniform As we move into some very cold and wet weather, a reminder to all families that students are to wear correct school uniform at all times. It is very important that we work together to ensure that our students are fine ambassadors and wear our uniform with pride. I would like to highlight that students are allowed to wear a coat or jacket to and from school in order to keep themselves warm and dry. At school if it is too cold or too wet, the children will remain indoors. NAPLAN Assessment Tasks This week our Year 3 and 5 students participated in the NAPLAN assessment tasks. I wish all of the children well and also thank the Year 3 and 5 teachers and the families of the children completing the assessment tasks for all of their work in ensuring the children are prepared. Best wishes to all and we look forward to receiving the children’s results in August. 2018 Enrolments I would like to remind families with children who will be beginning school in 2018 that we are taking enrolments now and that they are also closing rapidly with only a very small number of positions available as places are filling fast. Hence I strongly encourage you to ensure you return your child’s enrolment form to Jenny, Kylie or Julie as soon as possible. We also ask that members of our school community assist us by informing any of their neighbours of the enrolment procedures and direct them to the office to collect an enrolment form or our school website – www.glenps.vic.edu.au . School tours are available every Tuesday morning commencing at 9:30 and also upon request. Please call the school on 9802 9938 to book a tour. Trash Puppets Incursion – Thursday May 4th. Purpose: Relates to an inquiry question ‘Could recycling materials save

the world?’ and aims to empower students to get creative using recycled and reused materials.

Year 1

Ceres Excursion – Thursday 18th May. Purpose: Relates to an inquiry into ‘Minibeasts’, allowing students to

experience a variety of minibeasts in a safe environment.

Year 2

Hands on Science Incursion – Friday 21st April. Purpose: Relates to an inquiry titled ‘All Mixed Up’, designed to spark

curiosity ready for the Term 2 Science Inquiry Unit.

Year 3

Royal Botanic Gardens Excursion – Thursday 25th May. Purpose: Relates to a biological Science unit of inquiry

titled ‘Plants in Action’, students will deepen understanding of plants and their structure, adaptations, and

interactions.

Year 4

Scienceworks Excursion – Wednesday 10th May. Purpose: Relates to their exploration of ‘The Earth’s Place in

Space’ through an animation called ‘Tilt’, deepening student understanding.

Year 5

Melbourne Zoo Excursion – Wednesday 31st May. Purpose: Linked to an inquiry into ‘Desert Survivors’,

allowing students to talk to experts and see animals first hand.

Year 6

Interschool Sports – Friday April 28, May 5 & 12, June 2. Purpose: To enhance the physical activity

component of the school's health and wellbeing curriculum program while building links with neighbouring

schools.

Prime Sc! Incursion – Wednesday 3rd May. Purpose: Relates to inquiry into Earthquakes and natural

disasters, building on students’ understanding of the Earth’s structure.

Melbourne Museum and Imax Excursion – Wednesday 14th June. Purpose: Relates to inquiry into

Earthquakes and natural disasters, to again deepen student understanding of the Earth’s structure.

Incursions, excursions and Field trips are widely recognised moments in learning; importantly, they provide

positive, shared, social experiences with opportunities for students to encounter and explore novel things in

an authentic setting. Their importance is supported by professional organizations such as the National

Science Teachers Association which asserts field trips can “deepen and enhance” classroom study (NSTA

1999) and the National Research Council who assert a quality Science curriculum is one that extends beyond

the walls of the classroom (1996).

However lost his stick and

On this very last day

“Goodbye my only puppy”

Now she has no puppy

She was all sad and droopy
