This annual event highlights the importance of reading and draws on the joy of stories and the creavity of Australian books. Book Week is about encouraging students to read; to learn about new books; to share favourite writers and illustrators; to look again at old favourite books in maybe a different way; to take me to be alone and just read. The aim for teachers in Book Week is to create an excing environment that challenge and smulate students to enjoy the theme, Find Your Treasure as well as the books that are short listed for the 2018 Book of the Year. Here at Kew PS we are lucky to have all the short-listed tles for teachers to share, discuss, evaluate and enjoy with the students. Our book week parade on Wednesday was a highlight for our enre school community. We were indeed fortunate to have so many of the characters that we have grown to love and cherish step out of their books and into our hall. We all took the opportunity to reflect on our own literary experiences as we enjoyed the parade of characters. Witnessing Harry the Dirty Dogromp around the hall took me back to my childhood memory of reading this parcular favourite book of mine. Today our students have had the opportunity to learn about the experiences of two incredible authors – Mark Wilson and Gabrielle Wang. Mark enthralled our younger students through his presentaon detailing how stories and illustraons work together, with students being smulated to use their imaginaon and powers of observaon to enhance confidence in their own wring and drawing. Gabrielle drew on her range of life experiences to inform the students on where the ideas for her stories came from and then challenged the students to think about how they develop their ideas for their own wring. Gabrielle also discussed the research she undertakes in preparaon for her wring, inspiring our students to broaden their knowledge to assist in their wring. A special thankyou is extended to our real life Mary Poppins – Ruth our librarian, who has spent considerable me and energy in inspiring a love of reading in our students. Together with the literacy acon team Ruth organised Book Week to be enjoyed and celebrated by us all. BOOK WEEK @ KEW PRIMARY SCHOOL

Book Week is a special celebration of children’s literature which we all enjoy each year here at Kew Primary School. This annual event highlights the importance of reading and draws on the joy of stories and the creativity of Australian books. Book Week is about encouraging students to read; to learn about new books; to share favourite writers and illustrators; to look again at old favourite books in maybe a different way; to take time to be alone and just read. The aim for teachers in Book Week is to create an exciting environment that challenge and stimulate students to enjoy the theme, Find Your Treasure as well as the books that are short listed for the 2018 Book of the Year. Here at Kew PS we are lucky to have all the short-listed titles for teachers to share, discuss, evaluate and enjoy with the students.

Our book week parade on Wednesday was a highlight for our entire school community. We were indeed fortunate to have so many of the characters that we have grown to love and cherish step out of their books and into our hall. We all took the opportunity to reflect on our own literary experiences as we enjoyed the parade of characters. Witnessing ‘Harry the Dirty Dog’ romp around the hall took me back to my childhood memory of reading this particular favourite book of mine.

Today our students have had the opportunity to learn about the experiences of two incredible authors – Mark Wilson and Gabrielle Wang.

Mark enthralled our younger students through his presentation detailing how stories and illustrations work together, with students being stimulated to use their imagination and powers of observation to enhance confidence in their own writing and drawing.

Gabrielle drew on her range of life experiences to inform the students on where the ideas for her stories came from and then challenged the students to think about how they develop their ideas for their own writing. Gabrielle also discussed the research she undertakes in preparation for her writing, inspiring our students to broaden their knowledge to assist in their writing.

A special thankyou is extended to our real life Mary Poppins – Ruth our librarian, who has spent considerable time and energy in inspiring a love of reading in our students. Together with the literacy action team Ruth organised Book Week to be enjoyed and celebrated by us all. Special appreciation is also extended to our students, parents and staff for their input and support throughout the week.

READING AT KEW PRIMARY

Reading is a key priority in our 2017-2020 Strategic plan. Last year I completed a Leading Literacy course at the Bastow Institute and this year Clare and Diana are completing a similar course. We regularly participate in whole school Professional Learning run by teachers within our staff and engage outside presenters as well.

You may have heard your children discussing ‘Just Right’ books, which are books that are not too hard or too easy for them to read. This initiative has been run through the library and Ruth has worked with the children on strategies that will help them decide on books that they are interested in and that they are able to successfully read.

However, nothing is more important than ensuring that our children develop a love and excitement for reading. Our library is such an important aspect of engaging children in books and reading. Students have weekly library sessions with Ruth and their teachers and of course the library is open every lunch time where they can come in, read a book, play chess or use the lego and construction material.

Yesterday’s book week parade was a wonderful and fun event for everyone. Great to see the creativity of our school community when it comes to dressing up and the excitement that comes with that. A big thank you to Ruth for organizing such a special event, along with the Book Week speakers that are scheduled for today.

Some recent purchases for our Middle and Senior School reading sets.

PYP OPEN AFTERNOON

Dear Parents/Carers,

We invite all parents to attend a PYP open class afternoon. As a school community we have committed to the Primary Years Programme (PYP) Framework. This framework is a Student-Centred and inquiry approach to learning. Students will be provided with the knowledge, concepts, skills personal attributes and the capacity to take action, all of which younger students need to equip them for successful lives, both now and in the future.

This is an opportunity for you to visit your child’s class and ask their class teacher about inquiry learning and the PYP framework in an informal and relaxed manner. Teachers will be in their classrooms at this time to answer any questions you may have and to share the journey so far in the PYP inquiry learning framework. This open afternoon is on Monday 3rd September, 3.45-4.15pm. Please note that all teachers will not be available after 4.15 as they have Professional Learning Team Meetings.

If there are specific questions that you would like addressed about PYP, please feel free to email these to Sally or myself and we will try our best to answer your question.

Kind Regards Sally Marsh and Andrew Wood PYP Coordinators

PYP ~ PRIMARY YEARS PROGRAM

Reflection is a critical part of the Primary Years Program with Year level teams, individual teachers and of course students.

For teachers and their Professional Learning Teams, we may reflect on what went well and what didn’t, when working on an inquiry unit. We may adjust the direction of the inquiry based on our reflections and the observations that we make about the students’ understanding and their interest and engagement.

Students are encouraged to think deeply and critically about the issues that are raised through discussion, research and experience in inquiry learning sessions. Reflection may affirm their thinking, deepen their thinking or change their thinking but it is the actual reflective process that is most important.

CYBERSMART HELP – KIDS HELPLINE Kids Helpline is a free 24 hour counselling service for Australian kids and young people aged 5-25 years. You can get help over the phone, email or web. The counsellors talk with more than 6,000 kids each week, and help with all sorts of problems, big and small. Web counselling lets you connect one-on-one, real time, with a Kids Helpline counsellor, over the web. Because a lot of kids use web counselling, there is often a wait time before a counsellor is available. If you need to talk to someone now, call Kids Helpline on 1800 55 1800 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. What can you talk about?

You can talk to them about anything. Maybe something has happened at home or school and you're not quite sure

what to do about it. You might be feeling sad, scared or lonely, or just want to talk to someone who understands.

Or you might have a question that you want an answer to. No question or problem is too big or too small for Kids

Helpline.

Kids often call about:

Cyber issues

Family

Friends

Feeling sad

Feeling scared

School Anything!

You'll talk directly with a counsellor when you call Kids Helpline. The following things will happen each time you contact us:

You will hear a recorded message which tells you about how Kids Helpline works.

After listening to, or reading this message, you will be connected to a Kids Helpline counsellor

The counsellor you speak to will tell you his or her name, so if you call Kids Helpline again, you can ask to speak to the same person

Your counsellor will ask you what you would like to talk about and ask you some questions to help understand what's going on for you. You don't have to say your name and your counsellor won't tell anyone what you discuss
