SAMOHI CONCERT BANDS
Program Notes
March of the Emperor by Chris Brooks — Brooks and his partner Chris Crockarell
formed a percussion-focused music publishing company in the early 1980s. Behind each of their unique publications is their deep passion for the art of percussive music education. Bayport Sketch by Jared Spears — Released in 1975, Bayport Sketch is a classic
percussion piece scored for 7 players and an optional 2nd marimba. Fantasy on American Sailing Songs by Clare Grundman — Grundman’s score is a
lively and robust medley of American sea shanties including Hornet and Peacock; Lowlands, What Shall We Do with the Drunken Sailor? And Rio Grande. Each song is clearly stated and effectively developed with appealing melodic treatment. The Little Mermaid by Alan Menken, arr. Jay Bocook — Before Broadway was Disney
-fied and Times Square became a mall, the best Broadway musicals were being written for Disney animated features by composer Alan Menken and lyricist Howard Ashman. Their songs for The Little Mermaid created the mold from which their later work (Beauty & the Beast, Aladdin) would be cast. While they served up a plate of delightful blackened comedy in Poor Unfortunate Souls and Les Poissons (with its fish-eye view of the kitchen), there's no topping the Oscar-winning Calypso Under the Sea, in which a Caribbean crab sings about the surface world: “What do they got, a lot of sand? We’ve got a hot crustacean band.” In case you’ve forgotten, the newt play the flute, the bass play the brass… And oh, that blowfish blow!
POPS CONCERT 2012 5
Program Notes
Hawaii Five-O by Mort Stevens, arr.
Victor Lopez — CBS’s Hawaii Five-O was the
longest running television series (1968-1980) until NBC’s Law & Order surpassed it in 2003. An estimated 400 million people world-wide have seen the show, which opens with images of ocean waves and star Jack Lord standing on a balcony of the Ilikai Hotel, while Mort Steven’s signature theme song plays. Victory at Sea by Richard Rogers, arr.
Robert Russell Bennett — Victory at Sea is
a documentary television series about naval warfare during World War II. It was originally broadcast in 1952-1953 and was re-released as a film in 1954. Rogers’ score was a favorite of President Richard Nixon, and part of it was played at his funeral.
The Seal Lullaby by Eric Whitacre — Whitacre’s song is an homage to the baby seal in
Kipling’s poem of the same name, and incorporates a brief musical tribute to Danny Elfman and shy, melancholy Edward Scissorhands. It begins, “Oh! Hush thee, my baby, the night is behind us / And black are the waters that sparkled so green.” Khan by Julie Giroux — Or a Vision in a Dream. A Fragment. “In Xanadu did Kubla Khan /
A stately pleasure dome decree: / Where Alph, the sacred river, ran / Through caverns meas-ureless to man / Down to a sunless sea.” - Samuel Taylor Coleridge Poseidon by Julie Giroux — The Samohi Wind Ensemble is proud to present the West
Coast premiere of Poseidon. The composer writes, “Poseidon is a programmatic portrait of the Greek god Poseidon and is musically divided into the following sections:
The Ocean—its beauty, grace and often hidden powers of destruction.
Giant Sea Horses from the Depths.
Poseidon’s Seahorse Chariot—the great waves of Poseidon and his Chariots.
Medusa & Pegasus—Poseidon’s love for both Medusa (who was not always a hideous monster) and Pegasus, who flew out of the neck of Medusa when she was slain.
The Maelstrom—the strength and wrath of Poseidon. The piano, harp and vibraphone most often represent the rippling of water as sunshine dances through it. The lower brass often represent Poseidon himself.” Surprise piece by Eric Whitacre — Tonight’s final offering, to be announced from the
stage, was commissioned by the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and received its premiere November 28th, 1996. Composer Eric Whitacre writes: “The idea that this piece is being played all over the world in such serious concert venues is the single funniest thing I have ever heard. It has been played on the steps of the Capitol by the United States Marine Band, by the Scottish National Wind Symphony, and I have a video of a Japanese audience visibly confused and shaken by the whole experience.” A script written to accompany the piece appears on page 7 of this program.
POPS CONCERT 2012 7
Script for the Surprise Ending
PART I—FADE UP
It is a Bright and Sunny day as the sequined
curtain rises on tinsel town, and the excitement of a new day filled with the possibility of The Big Payoff is practically palpable. The band kicks off
the show in high gear and all is well as we suddenly hear:
CUT TO DESERT
A lone shakuhachi flute ushers the arrival of something really VERY bad.
CUT BACK TO BAND A relaxed rhumba. Showgirls blissfully jiggle.
CUT TO MILITARY COMMAND CENTER (stock
footage) Morse code signals the confirmation of
approaching doom.
CUT BACK TO BAND The players finish off their third set and head for
the bar; outside we hear:
SLOW ZOOM Oh no, oh no, oh no, it’s:
CLOSE UP Godzilla! Glorious Godzilla!
VARIOUS QUICK CUTS (stock footage) Godzilla destroys cars, screaming tourists, etc.
CUT BACK TO BAND
The band, quasi Greek Chorus, calls for Godzilla to Mambo.
GODZILLA, FULL FRAME Godzilla mambos, casually crushing hysterical
Vegans without missing a step.
EXTREME CLOSE UP A tiny terrier barking bravely, then:
CUT BACK TO GODZILLA Demolishing everything in his path… not even
the doggie escapes!
WIDE PAN As Godzilla heads down the strip, searching
relentlessly for:
CLOSE UP (stock footage) Frank Sinatra (Stomped!)
CLOSE UP (stock footage) Wayne Newton (Stamped!)
CLOSE UP (stock footage) Liberace (Stepped upon!)
VARIOUS CUTS
The Village Gods destroyed, Godzilla continues his carnage until the City of Sin is leveled!
PART II—FADE UP
A fearless army of Elvises (Elvi) appear in the
distance, formation marching through the littered streets.
VARIOUS CLOSE UPS
The Elvi attack, using bombers, missiles, etc.
EXTREME CLOSE UP
One wicked laugh from Godzilla and the Elvi scatter like mice!
QUICK CUT (stock footage)
The Sphinx sits outside The Luxor, looking seductive in a Mae West sort of way.
CLOSE UP Godzilla takes one look and his eyes pop out
of his head.
QUICK CUTS The Sphinx (Sphinxtress?) seduces Godzilla,
who instantly falls in love and begins to…
WIDE SHOT …tango with her.
SPLIT SCREEN As they dance, the Elvi slowly regroup and
head for the:
QUICK CUT (stock footage) Pirate ships at Treasure Island.
ACTION SEQUENCE (MONTAGE) The Elvi approach the dancing monster and
launch a ferocious volley of cannonballs
directly at him.
QUICK CLOSE UPS The cannonballs find their mark, and...
WIDE SHOT Godzilla falls to the ground, annihilated. The
Elvi are triumphant!
CROSSFADE The lounge is open again, and the city of Las
Vegas toasts the victory. The scene climaxes with:
VARIOUS CUTS (stock footage) People happy, tearful, etc. Stock footage,
stock music.
SLOW FADE OUT AND FADE UP A dark, ominous, and very familiar sound…
SLOW ZOOM Godzilla lives! Godzilla lives! Complete terror
(possible sequel?).
WIDE SHOT The Show is over. The End.
SAMOHI CONCERT BANDS 8
SCSBOA @ SAMOHI Festival
On March 28-29th, the Samohi Bands hosted the 10th Annual SCSBOA @ Samohi Band & Orchestra Festival. School groups came from middle schools and high schools as far away as El Centro, and the festival included a Premier Bands Concert featuring performances by 5 of Southern California’s top high school bands. Kudos to the Samohi Concert Band for earning a Superior rating on their performance, and to the Symphonic Winds and Wind Ensemble for their UNANIMOUS SUPERIOR ratings in both Performance and Sight Reading. Parent volunteers Robb Brown, Felecia Torrence and Pat Mahler were there from dawn to dark, making sure things ran smoothly, but they couldn’t have done it without the help of these band boosters: Ajani Bryant Gysi, Alisa Facchini Stewart, Amy Green, Amy Malina, Ania Szczepanek, Anie Kubicz-Preis, Ann Kummer, Arleen Ferrara, Becky Turk, Bob Nick-man, Bonnie Taub, Cathy Krop, Cherie Schlierman, Chris LeGagnoux, Claudia Franco, Cyn-thia Gotler, Debbie Arvesen, Debbie Menzies, Debbie Ricard, Dotty Cramer, Fran Kaplan, Gloria Musca, Irit Raz-McBride, Isabel Lopez, Janet McCreight, Janet Searfoss, Jason McBride, Jean Wood, Jin Q Yang, Joi Morris, Jonathan Fleck, Joshua Hirsch, Joy Cull, Judy Stocker, Karl Edwards, Kathy Clark, Laurie Charchut, Laurie Yehia, Lisa Burton, Lisa Melchi-or, Lisa Pearl, Lisette Gold, Mariana Davanzo, Marianne Smith, Marina Drasnin-Gilboa, Mark Choi, Martin Chenevert, Maura Zagor, Meri Weingarten, Mimi Winship, Mort Bern-stein, Nancy Greystone, Nancy Kane, Ofelia Aragon, Paola Levenson, Patricia Lewis, Paula Mazur, Rachel Deese, Ricki Bernstein, Ron Gotler, Ruth Horwitz, Sabrina Chun, Salome Bryant Gysi, Scott Norris, Shab Bahadori, Shelley Hawkins, Sherry Santo, Tammis Biraben, Tracey Muldaur, Tracy Saltzman, Yafang Su, Yvonne Goodwin & Zahava Yaari.
