American Technion Society National Board of Directors Meeting

March 10-12, 2018 Scottsdale, AZ

NECROLOGY We mourn the loss of leaders and family members of the ATS and Technion communities who have passed away since our last National Board of Directors meeting in New York. We lament the loss of Evelyn “Evie” Berger of Philadelphia. A longtime supporter and energetic leader, Evie served as the first female National President of the ATS, from 2001 to 2003. Previously, she was President of the Women’s Division and a member of a number of national BOD committees. She was a Technion Guardian and an Honorary Life Member of the Technion Board of Governors. Evie was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from the Technion in 2006 and an Honorary Fellowship in 2001.

We are deeply saddened by the passing of Bennett Nathanson of Bala Cynwyd, Pa., and Boca Raton, Fla., an admired leader and devoted supporter for more than three decades. Ben was a Life Trustee of the ATS National Board of Regents, a member and past president of the Philadelphia Chapter Board, and a member of the South Palm Beach Chapter Board. He was also an Honorary Life Member of the Technion Board of Governors. Ben was a graduate of Virginia Polytechnic Institute, and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He worked his entire professional life in the plastics materials industry for firms including Monsanto Chemical Company and Celanese, and was a member of the board of the Judaic Studies Program at Drexel University.

We extend our sincere condolences to David Ronn, on the loss of his father, Benjamin Ronn, and of his mother-in-law, Golda Geller Baker; and to Ilene Berger, on the loss of her father, Irving Harris.

NOMINATING COMMITTEE REPORT TO THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS

Rothman, Zahava Bar-Nir, ex-officio) I. 2018 Honorary Doctorates and Fellowships The Nominating Committee met by conference call on August 16, 2017 to review ATS national and regional recommendations for honorary degrees to be awarded at the Technion in June 2018. Recommendations came initially from the Hubs, in consultation with regional leadership. ATS national staff reviewed these names, which were then sent to the committee for its perusal, together with background information on each candidate. This year, after careful deliberation, the Nominating Committee submitted a number of recommendations. The process of selection by the Technion Council and other Technion administrative committees concluded in January and the names of those selected are as follows:

The Honorary Doctorate ceremony will be held on Monday, June 11.

II. Officers, Board of Directors and Board of Regents Nominations, effective October 1, 2018 The Committee met by conference call on February 8, 2018, to discuss nominations for Officers for the coming year (October 1, 2018 - September 30, 2019, except three years for Vice Chairmen) and Directors and Regents for the next three-year term (October 1, 2018 - September 30, 2021). The Committee’s recommendations to the Board are on the attached lists for the Board’s approval. Letters have been emailed from the Chairman of the Nominating Committee to these individuals, asking if they wish to serve. Response forms are being returned through Docusign to the ATS National Office. Following this, election is held by ballot, through Docusign, to the membership of the Society and counted on September 30, 2018. Terms are as stated above except for Life Trustee, which is under the “umbrella” of the Board of Regents, but is a term for life. For the year October 1, 2017 - September 30, 2018, we have 70 people on our Board of Directors, excluding 8 Past Presidents who, according to our By-laws, as amended, are automatic members of the Board and not counted in the maximum number of Board Members allowed. For the fiscal year 2018–2019 (October 1, 2018 – September 30, 2019), the maximum number of Board Members will be 80 (excluding Past Presidents). There are 48 members who are not up for reelection, and 22 whose terms are expiring, which brings the maximum total number of members who could be nominated to 32. The Committee voted to renominate 20 of the 22 individuals and add 7 new members for the coming year, for a total of 75 members of the Board, excluding the 8 Past Presidents. The Committee also voted to nominate the slate of Officers indicated on page 3 of this report. For the Board of Regents, currently there are a total of 40 Regents, of whom 23 are Life Trustees. There is currently no limit on membership on the Board of Regents. We have 6 members whose terms are expiring on September 30, 2018. The Committee recommends renominating 5 members. In addition, 2 members of the Board of Directors are nominated to move to Life Trustee. Below is the full slate of nominations for the Officers, Board of Directors and Board of Regents. This requires a vote of approval by the Board. This list does not reflect the final roster, as reply forms are being returned over the next several weeks.
