TEACHING I directed Forest Resources Seminar (FOR 679), offered both fall and spring semesters, from fall 1977 - spring 1983. Enrollment was approximately 32 graduate students each semester. Format for seminar consisted of graduate student presentations. I provided additional breadth and depth to the seminar by arranging presentations by 2 or 3 prominent research scientists each semester. I assisted with forest soils instruction during Forest Resources Practicum (FOR 330) in summer semester 1978-79, and have been a guest lecturer in many courses. In 1987, I assumed responsibility for the instruction of a graduate course, FOR 522, Forest Soils and Water Management. In 1990, I began teaching the course Research Methods (FOR 555) which is a required course for all graduate students in Forestry and Natural Resources. In 1993-94, I created an undergraduate course, FNR 322, Forest Soils, which is an elective course in the forestry option.

ADMINISTRATION Chairman, Graduate Committee From January 1984 to January 1991, I chaired the Graduate Committee in the Department of Forestry and Natural Resources. In this capacity, I served as the coordinator of a graduate program, which numbered 27-50 students and acted as the liaison between the department and the Graduate School on all matters concerning graduate students. I was responsible for the compilation and review of graduate applications, chaired a faculty review committee, reviewed graduate student audits, and made recommendations to the department chairman. I was responsible for awarding and managing all graduate student assistantships.

Assistant Director for Research and Development From March 1988 to October 1990, I served as assistant director for research and development, Division of Sponsored Programs, Purdue Research Foundation. While I was involved in campus-wide research and development activities, I had primary responsibility in the School of Agriculture, the School of Veterinary Medicine, and the School of Consumer and Family Sciences. I established a working relationship with the faculty in each of the departments in the three schools, with focus on identifying sponsored research opportunities, assisting faculty in preparation of proposals, and facilitating pre- and post-award activities. An integral part of these functions included developing a working relationship with federal agencies that were potential funding sources. I served as the liaison between the School of Agriculture and Purdue Research Foundation. I worked closely with other directors in the Division of Sponsored Programs to establish strategies in research development for the University and the School of Agriculture and assisted in the organization of interdisciplinary sponsored research. Assistant Head, Department of Forestry and Natural Resources From March 1989 to May 1994, I served as assistant head for the Department of Forestry and Natural Resources. I had overall authority on all matters concerning the department in the absence of the head and represented the department at school, University, and state-wide meetings. I counseled the head regarding fiscal, policy, and faculty matters, and had primary responsibility for research development from competitive funding sources. I revised, rewrote, and reformatted the graduate recruitment publications for the department, which were published in October 1993. Special Assignment, School of Agriculture Grantsmanship

In September 1990, I was appointed chairman of the Grantsmanship Committee for Agriculture and served in that capacity until 1992. The primary responsibility of the committee was to identify programs and facilitate activities, which increased the interest, competitiveness, and success of the Agriculture faculty in securing grant and contract support.

ESCOP Leadership Program

In February 1991, I was selected as a participant in the State Agricultural Experiment Station (SAES) System leadership development program, which is sponsored by the Experiment Station Committee on Organizational Policy (ESCOP) and the Cooperative State Research Service (CSRS) of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The three-phase program was designed to develop and refine leadership skills of selected faculty so they could more effectively contribute to their State Agriculture Experiment Station's research program.

Director, Illinois-Indiana Sea Grant College Program In May 1994, I was selected by Purdue University, School of Agriculture, and University of Illinois, College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences, to serve as director of the Illinois-Indiana Sea Grant Program (IISGP). The National Sea Grant Program, housed in the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the Department of Commerce, is modeled after Agriculture’s land-grant system. The IISGP is one of 30 state programs nationwide whose overall goal is to promote environmentally sustainable coastal development and use. The IISGP encourages the participation of federal agencies, all universities in the bi-state, state and local government agencies, business and industry, citizens, and non-for-profit organizations in its programs. As director, I had overall fiscal and programmatic responsibility for the IISGP, which has research, outreach (extension, communication, and education) and administration functions. I was responsible for: (1) grants and contracts, pre- and post-award grants administration, including the issuance of RFPs, proposal review, and awarding of grants and contracts; (2) the establishment, development and management of the functional areas of the

Page 34: Pope curriculum vitae2 - Purdue Agriculture · POPE - 3 Newsletter editor 1977-79 Secretary-Treasurer 1981-82 Executive Council, 1977-79, 1981-82 Silviculture Committee 1989-90 Indiana

POPE - 34

IISGP; (3) personnel management, including performance evaluation and awarding of salaries; and (4) funding negotiations with NOAA, the National Sea Grant Program, and other federal, state, and corporate sponsors. As a Sea Grant director, I was a member of the Sea Grant Association, and the Council of Great Lakes Sea Grant Directors. Through Purdue University, I was a member of the National Association of State Universities and Land- Grant College (NASULGC) and represented the IISGP on the Board of Oceans and Atmosphere, and I served as a representative of Sea Grant on the Executive Committee and Federal Relations subcommittees from 1996-99. As director, I reported to the vice presidents for research at Purdue University and the University of Illinois. Associate Dean, The Graduate School In July 1998, I was selected by the vice president for research and dean of the Graduate School at Purdue University to serve as associate dean of the Graduate School. In addition to the following list of duties and activities, I was given the primary responsibility for: (1) developing effective strategies for graduate student recruiting; (2) formulating a new strategic plan for the Graduate School; and (3) organizing resources and developing processes to make the Graduate School’s data management, and applications, admissions, plans of study, thesis submissions, etc., fully electronic. I interact with senior research and academic program administrators in organizing and planning University actions, which impact research and graduate education. Formally, I advised the vice president for research and dean of the Graduate School on matters affecting the Graduate School. While final decisions and negotiations with the central administration reside with the dean, I have been responsible or had primary roles for the following:

• Developed the concept and secured funding for the Graduate Student Recruitment Incentive Grants Program. These are competitive grants, awarded annually to departments and interdisciplinary programs to promote creative ways to recruit graduate students.

• Developed a proposal, funded by the Office of the Provost, to create a Graduate Student Recruitment

Office in the Graduate School.

• Developed a student inquiry data management system through the “Apply Yourself Company,” which is used by all departments on the West Lafayette Campus.
