Stress Busters - Our Department Clubhouse…!!!

Elecroma Club

Social club “ANTAR AATMA”

Energy Club

Personality Development Club

Objective-The aim of this club is to make aware the students & society aware about the importance of energy conservation. Spreading awareness is essential following the gap between electricity

production and consumption and the exponential increase in the demand of electricity due to globalization. This club was formed in odd sem session 2013-14 and the orientation of this club

was conducted on 22nd Sept.2013, Thursday. Activity 1-One Essay Competition on (i)Future of energy conservation and green energy sources

(ii) Impact of energy conservation on economy and society Was organized for II year students on 05.09.13 Thursday in 251 students have participated.

Activity 2- The Awareness Session on Energy Conservation was taken by III yr. student members

using presentation mode for I yr. students. This activity was a huge success as approx. 500 students participated in this.

The objective of this club is to make the future electrical engineers at Poornima understand their responsibility towards the society and nature with the highest sense of the responsibili-

ties.

Activity 1- The first activity was a visit to an orphanage. The visit was on 06.09.13 Friday.( First we ask about their basic requirements at orphanage and then we

fulfilled them by our combined contribution )

Activity 2- The second activity was a Tree Plantation which was organized on Satur-

day 21.09.13 Saturday.( We planted 35 plants at that day some at orphanage and some at

a church )

The objective of this club is to develop confidence among students by removing their stage fear and hesitation of public speaking.

Activitiy 1- We started the activity by Casual & Formal Introduction with time constraint to analyze their weaknesses this was continued continuously for two weeks.

Activity 2- Then we conducted Know the neighbour, Extempore activity next week to analyze their delivery level and for simul-taneous rectification.

Activirty3- The third activity (4th & 5th week) was Newspaper activity which aimed at Accent improvement, confidence building,

vocabulary enhancement, verbal communication.

The objective of this club is to enhance the overall development of the students. In order to accomplish this wish, the elecroma club was formed on 07.09.13 as an orientation pro-

gram. Activity 1- The first activity of this club was a Website Designing session conducted on 14th

Sept.2013 Saturday. The most important aspect of this session was that it was conducted by a III year student Aseem Gupta, who worked on this as his non syllabus project.

This activity was to create awareness among the students on “the fundamentals of website

(www.clockpirates.com,www.electicdiscuss.clockpirates.com) designing” which was appreciated

by the participants. Students extended their appreciation by demanding for similar activities in

future.

Faculty Talk -A Technical Communiqué

The true cause of Magnetostriction Magnetostriction is generally described as the deformation of a

body in response to a change in the direction of magnetization

through application of a magnetic field. The general perception

is that the true crystal structure is somewhat distorted by strains

caused by the magnetic and exchange forces. We will define mag-

netostriction as the change of shape of a ferromagnetic body as a

result of its magnetization. It is to exclude the word "deformation",

for, as will be seen, the magnetostriction itself is not a defor-

mation, even though it usually causes it.

The magnetostriction effect is practically important. It should be

minimized in some technical applications and maximized in others.

Its physical origin remains unknown, considering that no refer-

ences to its explanation given in 2001 can be found. The status of

the problem was described in as follows: "Despite the tremen-

dous advances in modern electronic structure theory for studies in

material science, magnetostriction has been rarely attacked until

very recently, due to its intrinsic complexity". The purpose of the

present article is to make the explanation of the physical cause of

magnetostriction easily available. It will be shown that the seem-

ing "intrinsic complexity" of the phenomenon resulted from the

looking for the answers in wrong direction. The electron structure

may be relevant, but only indirectly. It is the crystal structure

that had to be carefully analyzed.

The Fe simple crystal structure and the simple pattern of its spon-

taneous magnetization were very helpful to analyze and illustrate

the cause of magnetostriction. The key to examination of magne-

tostriction in other ferromagnetics is provided. One might notice,

for example, that Ni ferromagnetic phase is also believed to be truly

cubic. We can predict that it is not. Nature is thrifty with its mech-

anisms; the origin of magnetostriction is hardly not universal.

Modern Microprocessors A set of characteristics is fairly common

across most aerospace and defense applica-

tions, whether an airborne platform, tactical

radio, radar, or munition, yet, the value, or

priority, of these characteristics can vary

significantly. Performance-including through-

put, interrupt latency, and cache size and

speeds-is an important consideration, as is the

board support package (BSP) for real-time

operating systems (RTOSs) and device driv-

ers.BAE Systems 3U and 6U boards sport the

company's radiation-hardened processors, which are employed on a variety

of satellites.

"Maintaining the integrity of the data, through the use of technology, such as

error-correcting code (ECC) or processor lockstep operation, throughout the

processing subsystem is important across many applications, such as avion-

ics and military communicat"It is important to differentiate between dynamic

power and static power when considering power consumption. Static power

and sleep modes are also critical in military communications, like tactical

radios, where battery life is critical.

Airborne application

A broad range of aerospace and defense applications and platforms require

rugged microprocessors. The Apache helicopter employs the company's

COBALT with an onboard 8-port GigE switch, as well as an 80-gigabyte,

solid-state drive and a Kontron Core2Duo single-board computer. COBALT

is a small, lightweight computing device based on Kontron's COM Express

single-board computer offering fanless operation and a Gigabit Ethernet

interface.Demand for optimized SWaP-C products is also growing, along

with the UAV market. "The need for small, lightweight, fanless products will

drive the development of microprocessors over the next several decades.

System That Allows Searching for Data on an Object by Looking at It This object is a helmet. When the wearer of the helmet closes his/her eyes for two

seconds, the device starts searching for information on the building or monument

that the users faces. The system accesses the computer remotely and searches for

geo-referenced databases like Google Earth. After the scan, the obtained

information is transferred to the user's Smartphone. To make the system as non-

intrusive as possible, the user can use text-to-speech engine. Data is received

through an ear piece.

The Telecommunications Research Center in

Vienna came up with an idea. The idea was based on an eye

tracker designed for Web-use analysis on the street to surf

through urban landscapes. They connected the device to

a Smartphone that features a built-in compass and

GPS (to identify the position of the user). The device

features two cameras. One that is trained on a person's eye

and another one on the view that is being observed In

addition, researchers installed sensors that identify

whether the user is looking up or down. The whole kit is

then mounted on a bicycle helmet.

An eye tracker is a device for measuring eye positions and

eye. Edmund Huey built an early eye tracker, using a sort of contact lens with a

hole for the pupil.

The lens was connected to an aluminum pointer that moved in response to the

movement of the eye. When changing its points of fixation, the observer's eye

repeatedly returns to the same elements of the picture. Additional time spent on

perception is not used to examine the secondary elements, but to reexamine the

most important elements.

Near Field Communication (NFC) Technology Your credit cards: gone. Bus pass and train

tickets: vanished. You've been the victim not of

theft, but of the future – a future where the wallet,

purse, paper ticket and pocket have all gone

digital and live solely on your phone.

Welcome to Near Field Communications (NFC), a

contactless, Wi-Fi-lite style tech that could already

be in your smartphone, and could soon be a

regular feature of your commute. The NFC communication is based on

an inductive RF link on 13.56 MHz. Operating distance typical up to

20 cm. Backward compatibility with RFID systems. Data exchange

rate up to 424 Kbps.

It uses magnetic field induction to enable communication between two

devices.The host device generates a low-frequency radio-wave field

and waits for another NFC device to get close enough to the contact

field. Magnetic inductive coupling transfers energy and data from one

device to the other. Most new Barclaycard, American Express,

MasterCard Pay Pass and Visa Europe cards have NFC contactless

tech within. Such cards can be used to make small purchases in shops

– and, since last week, on London buses.

And with 30 million already in circulation in the UK this is where the

'digital wallet' exists for now. If NFC identifies you , you can use your

smartphone instead of a passport. Toulouse-Balgnac Airport has

already successfully trialled NFC secure boarding passes with

BlackBerry devices, which acted as their security pass for a dedicated,

priority path through the airport. NFC could help users work with

other wireless protocols.PCs, TVs, and other devices besides cell

phones and PDAs may become NFC enabled.Vendors using trial

results to determine how best to design devices and user interfaces to

work with NFC.Adoption to be driven by mobile commerce.

AUTOMATIC METER READING

Automatic meter reading (AMR) is the technology of automatically collecting data from energy metering devices (water, gas and electric) and transferring that data to a central database for billing and/or analyzing. This spares the employee from making trips and the billing is based on actual consumption rather than on an estimate based on previous consumption, giving customers a better control on their use of electric energy , gas usage or water consumption. A Transmitter is connected to the meter and it counts the pulses from it and displays it over the seven segment display. The data is

transmitted over radio frequency. At the receiver end, the data is received by a receiver module and the microcontroller displays it over the seven segment display.

BEGIN WITH END IN MIND

‘Begin with end in mind’ is based on the principle that all things are created twice. One is mental creation and other is physical creation. Take an example of construction of a house; we will collect details of each and everything even before putting the

first brick of the house. It is very unfortunate that most of us

forget to plan the most important journey called ‘life’. Do not try to give a chance to regret that ‘I couldn’t do anything yesterday’. Plan your work and do it perfectly….because: “PAST IS HISTORY, FUTURE IS MYSTERY AND PRESENT IS REALITY.” So let us realize this truth and “begin with end in mind.”

It will help the poor slum people to have light in their houses at free of cost as these plastic bottle lights consume no electricity. This method is based on used plastic bottles and corrugated steel pieces. Take a few transparent plastic bottles and fill them with water and bleaching powder for days. Make some holes on the roof and install bottles. Each bottle will produce enough light as a 40watt to 60watt electric bulb.

LIFE

Life is the name of purpose, struggle, love, dedication and a number of feelings and emotions. Life shows its true colours with time. It depends upon how you look towards life and what is your strategy of leading an ideal life. Basically life is the time duration which is provided by God to us to

complete all the tasks for which we have been sent to this land. Life takes number of turns during its whole span.It teaches us not to be jealous of someone as we have come in this world empty handed and will leave this world in the same manner. So spend your whole time in achieving your goals as it is said: “When you want something, the entire universe conspires in helping

you to achieve it.” At last remember that: “The darkest hour of night comes just before the dawn.” The inspiration of life is to serve mankind. Spread happiness and you will be blessed!!

SAVE ENERGY

Why do we need to save Energy? In the past few years, the consumption of energy was not high. But with increasing development, change in lifestyle, growing population and depleting resources, the consumption

has increased significantly. In case of petrol, the prices have increased abruptly and are still increasing. In case of Electricity, some places have seen an increase in tariffs, but most of the houses in the country are still protected by subsidies. But the status cannot be maintained for long as the power companies are under huge losses because of increase in coal prices (most of the electricity is still generated on coal). The alternative

source of electricity generation has still not reached a state where they can replace coal. As per the World Coal Association with current rate of production, Coal will last for only 118 more years. Increasing population will bring that down further and thus price of coal is set to increase many folds. Another major reason for saving electricity is that burning of coal produces emission of gases that are linked to weird climate change. Sufficient supply of

energy is the highest need for developing a country. We are in such a phase in this world where energy crisis is looming large on us. For India to achieve sustainable growth, we need to make sure that we do not suffer from energy crisis. So it is very important that we should start saving energy or electricity. Even a small effort from all of us collectively will help our country to develop in a sustainable manner. Everyone should save and pass this

habit of saving energy to our next generation for a better present and future.

Rajasthan: A Leader in Solar Development in India

Rajasthan has about 2,08,110 km2 of desert land, which is 60% of the total area

of the state. Rajasthan receives solar radiation of 6.0-7.0 kWh/m2 . As the area

has low rainfall, about 325 days have good sunshine in a year.

Rajasthan is one of the leading states of India in the field of solar energy. The

total photovoltaic capacity has passed 500MW, reaching 510.25MW at the end of

the 2012-13 fiscal year. The district of Jodhpur leads with 42 projects totalling

293 MW, followed by Jaisalmer and Bikaner. In total there were 84 projects with

installed capacity of 512.9. The French group AREVA solar is currently

engaged in constructing a 250MW concentrated solar power (CSP) installation

which will become the largest CSP installation in Asia. A 4000MW Mega Green

Solar Power Project is being built near Sambhar Lake in Rajasthan. Upon

Completion, it would be world's largest Solar Power Plant. The first phase of the

project, which will be of 1000 MW capacity, is likely to be commissioned by the

end of 2016.

STUDENTS AND STUDIES

Ours is a developing world. With the onset of new technologies and

advancements, we are heading into a whole era of machines and

mechanization. And why not everyone of us has toiled for it ,day in and

day out. But wait! Have we ever realized what we are doing to ourselves

with this whole era of advancement and progress? We ourselves have

turned into’ machines’. From school going to college going youth we have

been trained to score good marks and to be the ‘best’.

Our new generation and specially the youth is surviving in an air of

depression.Frustration, loss of interest, mental disturbance and physical

weakness are now normal things. We have no time left for ourselves. No

time to develop our talents and the least time for recreation and leisure. The

growing competition and the feeling of ‘getting to the top ‘has completely

entangled us in its web and we have no time to think about ourselves.

Today students can be seen loaded with piles and piles of books-course

books, etc.Exercise, games and other activities are a must, but the question

which arises is-‘where is the time left for all these?’

Dear friends just answer this simple question. What will you gain if you

lose yourself? Nothing! Absolutely nothing! So just remember these few

tips in your career. Strive for everything but without the unnecessary

anxiety which depletes your health. If you don’t succeed, do not stop and

get frustrated, just keep going going and some day you will reach the

stars.

10 GOOD REASONS TO STUDY ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING 1. IT'S EASY TO GET YOUR FIRST JOB Electrical engineering students fairly easy find their first job because most employers in

electrical field search for fresh mind, with fresh knowledge and at the same time they get

young people they can mold to their own specific needs and make experts out of them.

2. YOU CAN WORK IN ANOTHER COUNTRY

Working as electrical engineer opens you lots of opportunities in other countries. Laws of

math, electricity and physics are universal and your gained knowledge doesn't limit you to

only the country you studied in. There are a lot of international companies that need

electrical engineers, also most of them are willing to employ people form other countries,

and most of them operate on international level that offers you additional options of

traveling while working. Besides, you are usually getting payed well for it!

3. STUDENT PRAXIS CAN BE EXTENDED TO EMPLOYMENT Most INDIAN universities demand students of electrical engineering to get short praxis

with companies before they graduate and usually, if you perform well you can extend your

praxis into employment after graduation. The employer already knows you already, they

know your skills and work ethics and also they usually start to mold you in their "specific

needs" profile during your praxis.

4. YOU GAIN A WIDE RANGE OF KNOWLEDGE DURING YOUR STUDIES Thinking that electrical engineering is just one dimensional is wrong. The range of

knowledge gained during studies is amazingly broad and versatile. Even just basic studies

gives you wide range of skills - from programming to writing reports; lets face it, reports are

required on every step of electrical engineering studies and every employer will demand

writing reports on different fields you work on. Even though you are studying a specific part

of electrical engineering you will get basics of almost all aspects of electrical engineering

and it shouldn't be a big problem to find solutions to a problem that is not strictly in your

specific field of expertise.

5. COMPUTER SKILLS Modern world is run by computers. Most of the people use it on regular basis, but some still

struggle with some operations that demand knowledge, that goes just a little bit beyond

"Click an icon". Electrical engineers are faced with computer problems on every step of

their studies and also every day on a job, that's why we usually gain computer skills during

studies, when we have to install different programs for our studies, run analysis and tweak

components or electrical circuits. Computers become parts of us and we know that hitting

them won't make them run faster but fixing might...

6. ADRENALINE

Maybe adrenaline isn't first thing that pops in your mind when you think about electrical

engineering, but trust me there will be a lot of adrenaline rush moments if you get in

electrical engineering. Occasional jolts of electrical charge that hits you when you aren't

paying attention and touch the leads of charged capacitor or when you connect 2 wires that

you shouldn't or an electrical component more or less explodes in front of your eyes because

you connected it on the testing board in the wrong way... Those events make you jump out

of your chair and definitely raise your adrenaline level. On the other hand you won't most

likely do the same mistake again!

7. DIY

DIY or "Do It Yourself" is one of more exciting reasons why to get in electrical

engineering. When you know how stuff works, what usually malfunction and what are basic

rules of electrical engineering you can make your own stuff that usually you need to search

for and buy. It's not always cheaper, although some solutions will save you great deal of

money, but it works as you want it to work and it's your own creation what gives it

additional value and also nice reference in your CV if you are applying for a job. DIY

creations are unlimited. You can build a 1 sensor that would cost you 10 in a store or a

computer controlled cutter that costs 1000 but you just spent 200 building it.

8. MR./MRS. FIX-IT Not only everyday fixes, like changing a burned out light bulb or faulty fuse aren't scary

moments any more - you might also be able to cope with more complex problems with your

computer etc. That doesn't only save you money but also works great as a pick up line...

9. NEW STUFF GETS OUT ALL THE TIME - IT NEVER GETS BORING

Electrical and electronic components are modified, invented and reinvented every day, so

you will never be bored because you are using same process or component for the last 10

years. New and exciting stuff is available all the time and you will have lots of fun testing

an assembling it.

10. ONLY FEW SIMPLE RULES TO FOLLOW Things work better when plugged to power. Electrical components work on smoke - when it

gets out you are in trouble. If things don't work, read a manual.
