TIME!

Every day, people with limps, walkers, canes and wheelchairs come to an important realization - the pain is just too much. Choosing to have any elective surgery is no easy decision; even when you know the end result is saying goodbye to your pain and hello to your life. While total hip replacements have been one of the most successful surgeries since they began, deciding to have the procedure has always come with its costs, until now.

Orthopedic surgeons at the Joint Replacement Center at Broward Health North offer an innovative new approach to hip replacement surgery - anterior hip replacement using the specially designed hana® table. Patients who choose the anterior approach to hip replacement as opposed to the traditional posterior approach don’t just say goodbye to the pain, they say goodbye to the restrictions as well.

Patients receiving anterior hip replacement experience none of the precautions related to traditional hip replacement, including no post-op dislocation precautions, no restriction of post-op activity, immediate use of normal toilet height, no post-op abduction pillow (between the knees) required, cross legs as desired, no shoe lift requirements and no post-op sexual activity limitations.

“Approximately 375,000 Americans undergo hip replacement surgery each year,” says Dr. Bruce Janke, Medical Director of the Joint Replacement Center at Broward Health North. “With this number expected to almost double over the next 25 years due in part to the aging population, it is important that people know they have a choice in the type of procedure they undergo.”

With the anterior approach, a small four inch incision is made just below and to the outside of the groin.

Two muscles are then pushed aside, giving the surgeons access to the hip socket to perform the

replacement. No muscles at any time during the procedure are split or detached. For the patient, that results in a faster recovery, less pain, smaller incision, less blood loss and less scarring.

“The outcomes are incredible,” says Dr. Steven Naide, Medical Director of Orthopedic Trauma at Broward Health North.

“Within weeks our patients are getting back to golf, tennis, yoga, whatever it is they enjoy doing that became impossible due to pain.”

The Joint Replacement Center is the recipient of the Florida Hospital Association 2011 Celebration of Achievement in Quality and Service award for Innovation of the Year in Patient Care. The Center is also first in Broward County to be Joint Commission Certified for Hip and Knee Replacement.

Our experienced surgeons at Broward Health North have performed more than 3000 anterior

hip surgeries using the hana® table. Why live in pain when you can choose to put the fun back in your life?

The level of dress for any dinner party depends on the style of the invitation. If it is a word of mouth invitation, this would indicate a relaxed level of dress. If you receive a written invitation, this requires dressy attire. The more expensive or formal the stationery, the more formal the dress code.

If it is a business related dinner, the dress code will be more formal dress than those for a dinner held with close friends or family. Control any tendency to expose a lot of skin when attending a business related dinner.

Follow our suggestions and you can focus on having a good time, instead of worrying about how you look!

DINNER PARTY ALERT!From the business dinner to the ultimate formal affair, follow these tips to be dressed for success

Strappy sandals or high heel shoes that are patent, fabric or beadedStylish well cared for shoes can complete your total image, and horrible shoes can sabotage a great outfit. Your heel height proportion in comparison to your hem length is important, and a good rule of thumb is: the higher the hem, the lower the heel and the lower the hem, the higher the heel.

Dressy jewelryWear styles that glitter or call attention to the face, or anything that has a sophisticated evening elegance, e.g., a two strand set of pearls twisted together, and joined by a large gold and rhinestone clasp. Think earrings that are medium to large, with drop styles being the most popular.

Always remember! Your best accessories are to smile, be sweet, and laugh if someone tells a joke. This will give you a happy glow that tells people you're content and up for having a good time!

When you’re not sure what the dress code is for a dinner party, opt for a sleek little black dress worn with dressy accessories. You will be sitting for most of the event so look for styles that play up your arms and compliment your facial features. Look for styles that are strapless, asymmetrical, halter, or racer-back cuts. Sleeveless styles like the sheath or with spaghetti straps will flatter your arms. Cap sleeves are best for people with thin upper arms, because they hit at the widest part of the upper arm.

Evening make-upEvening makeup calls for drama. Evening is not the time to go au naturel. This is time for some shimmer: eyes that "pop" and lips that seduce. If you want to look fabulous, remember this simple tip: Either play up your eyes or your mouth, never both. If you emphasize both features, you risk looking dated, harsh and artificial.

Bare legs (if they look good) or sheer high quality hosieryHosiery is the most visible item of lingerie that a woman wears and its denier, light reflectiveness, texture, pattern and material can instantly change the image of what you are wearing. Wear dark, solid colors and ribbed textures with dark clothes to slenderize and elongate your figure. Don't wear pastels or white pantyhose with a dark skirt unless you are six feet tall or want to cut your figure in half. Wear sheers for a touch of sophistication and elegance.

Small dressy purseEvening bags and purses are the icing of your outfit! Use a dressy and plush purse to go with a beautiful evening dress, and a leather envelope purse to complement a fabulous party outfit. Sequined/beaded purses are too delicate to carry at crazy parties. I suggest looking for a purse that has a hand or shoulder strap, in case you get tired of carrying it. One with a hidden strap will be more versatile!

When issuing the invite for Afternoon Tea – if you go in the direction of utmost formality – make sure to set the tone in your invitation. Polish your silver and by all means embrace all of the loveliness of a Victorian era tea party.

Should you wish to just take tea with your companions, you can make that clear in the invitation you issue as well. Do go to a little trouble, though; after all, you are having guests into your home. Use the nice mugs – not the one little Billy made for you in kindergarten craft center.

When toning down the formality of your tea, consider offering coffee along with the Orange Pekoe – whatever sweet and savories you serve will pair equally with either beverage.

Depending on your location you may find there’s a restaurant, bakery or hotel that serves Afternoon Tea. Hunt for one, gather up your Ladies in Waiting, and go for tea – you are sure to learn something useful from the professionals.

Make the simple art of enjoying tea with friends your own by hosting a party or visiting a local establishment that continues this lovely tradition.

FASHION: THE GOODS || YOUR LIFESTYLE

TEA BY ANY NAME. . .

High Tea and Afternoon Tea are not the same. One might be inclined to think that High Tea is the more formal of the two. Au contraire, my friend – High Tea actually refers to the height of the table and at one time was favored by the working class. It is traditionally associated with heavy meats and cheeses and has more of a meal atmosphere. We have Anna, the Seventh Duchess of Bedford and one of Queen Victoria’s Ladies in Waiting to thank for the art of Afternoon Tea. In the 1840s, within the walls of the palace, dinner was traditionally served late in the evening. In order to keep hunger at bay, Anna began the practice of taking tea and cakes in her sitting room in the afternoon. Before you knew, it the Duchess was inviting friends in and voila! Afternoon Tea was born in England.

Afternoon Tea is actually more formal than High Tea - but really - as Americans, can’t we approach the art of tea consumption however we’d like? Yes.

Should you decide to invite friends for Afternoon Tea, it is likely your guests will conjure up visions of silver teapots, fine china and scones. If you feel so moved, then break out those accoutrements; however, you may wish for a simpler visit over a spot of tea – you establish the mood.

YOUR LIFESTYLE|| MARITAL MINUTES

The Happily Ever After mindset is self-indulgent and foolish. Everyone makes mistakes, everyone falls, and everyone stumbles. It is important that when we go into a marriage we understand this.

There are three ingredients to marriage: faith, hope, and love. The greatest of the three ingredients is love.

Love: To love someone is to trust them. Just like you have faith in God, faith that God loves you and faith that God will forgive you, you need to forgive your partner.

Hope: If you do not have hope it is like a plant that withers and dies. There are only two states of being in the universe: growing and dying. Nothing ever stays the same – because of this you need hope. You need a goal(s).

Faith: At times when you feel lost, if you have faith you will persevere. With faith you will develop hope. When you have faith and hope you are able to trust. When you are able to trust you also will be able to love.

NEXT GENERATION

|||||||||▐ catching up with the culinary master

your kidsIn January I wrote about Joe, a retired foodservice vice president and graduate of the Culinary Institute of America, who is now in his fifth year as a high school Culinary Arts teacher. The following is based on a conversation with Joe regarding his perspective on teaching high school students. Joe’s goal is to prepare his students to get a job in the restaurant industry after graduation or inspire them to pursue a Culinary Arts degree. Accordingly, he treats his students like he would any person working in the restaurant industry. He is always evaluating their strengths and weaknesses to figure out the best method to prepare his students for the high expectations that they will face in the restaurant industry and to pass required industry related exams.

In addition to the required curriculum, students are exposed to real world culinary experiences through running a school restaurant and catering events. In both instances, students develop the competencies necessary to perform all of the functions associated with these experiential learning activities. Real world culinary experiences range from the inventory process to serving the food, and every step in-between. Joe states that

these experiences will transfer into the work world, as well as strengthen each student’s academic ability across content areas. For instance, culinary students must be able to read and comprehend a recipe, accurately follow the steps to completion, make adjustments to a recipe using math skills, and understand the science behind a recipe. Furthermore, students are required to work in groups to complete given tasks, which builds their collaboration and communication skills.

Outside of Joe’s classroom, adults can learn about the Culinary Arts by taking a class through Broward Community Schools. Although most classes will have started by the time of this publication, visit their website and plan for the next round of exciting culinary classes at browardcommunityschools.com.

SHOULDER PAINBenjamin Bruce, MD, Orthopedic Surgeon

Will I have to have surgery? The majority of shoulder pain can be treated without surgery. We can often help our patients through the healing process without surgery. Tailored physical therapy plans, specific to your diagnosis, or selective injections are typically successful at getting patients back to their everyday activities.

What if I have a torn rotator cuff? The goal is to get rid of your pain and get you back to the activities are important to you. For some people, this means throwing a 95 mile-per-hour fastball. For other people, this means being able to brush their hair or put on a coat without pain. My job is to understand who you are and what your goals are so that we can develop an effective treatment plan together.

What kind of test/procedure is done to find out what is wrong with shoulder? A complete history and physical exam is, by far, the most important part of diagnosing shoulder pain. This means asking questions about the onset, character and duration of pain as well as testing the strength and range of motion of your shoulder. We use special physical exam maneuvers to isolate different muscles, ligaments and bones in the shoulder to see how well they are working. Together, the patient and the physician can provide far more information about shoulder pain than any single test. Many physicians rely too heavily on the use of specialized tests, such as MRI and ultrasound to

make a diagnosis. These tools, although extremely helpful in giving us insight into a problem, should only be used to confirm rather than diagnose the problem.

What can I do about arthritis? Patients with shoulder arthritis have lost the smooth cartilage that lines the shoulder joint, and as a result, have pain and loss of range of motion. There are several treatment options for shoulder arthritis. Many patients benefit from physical therapy and injections to help stretch and strengthen the shoulder capsule and muscles. For some patients with early arthritis, there is some evidence that an arthroscopic procedure (the use of small cameras and tools to work in the shoulder joint) may be of benefit for a little while. Patients who do not respond to conservative treatments may benefit from shoulder replacement surgery. The goal of shoulder replacement surgery is to get rid of pain and improve range of motion. Although shoulder replacements are less common than hip or knee replacements, studies have shown that shoulder replacements are less dangerous and carry less risk than other types of joint replacements.

Are there any myths about shoulder pain that should be cleared up? I hear so many different things … it’s hard to pinpoint just one. My goal is to help you understand what is going inside your body that is causing your shoulder pain. Together, we will address your pain

and address any potential misconceptions you may have. My job is to educate my patients about your problems so you understand what is causing your pain and how your treatment plan will help.

Dr. Bruce treats all aspects of orthopedic injury and illness, including trauma and fracture management. He specializes in advanced shoulder techniques as well as cartilage restoration procedures. With expertise in minimally invasive arthroscopic procedures as well as complex shoulder reconstructions, Dr. Bruce utilizes the most advanced techniques to restore function and eliminate pain.

Dr. Bruce earned his medical degree at the Stanford University School of Medicine. While there, he was selected as one of the 30 medical students from across the country to win the Howard Hughes Medical Scholarship. Dr. Bruce completed his orthopedic residency at Brown University, where he also completed a fellowship in trauma. He subsequently completed a second fellowship in shoulder and elbow surgery at the prestigious Rush Medical Center in Chicago, where he was assistant team physician for the Chicago Bulls and White Sox.

Why do people suffer from shoulder pain?Pain in the shoulder region can be caused by a damaged or injured structure inside the shoulder, such as the rotator cuff, the biceps tendon or worn out cartilage. Sometimes, however, pain in the shoulder region is caused by a problem outside the shoulder, such as neck arthritis. Our first goal is to determine what is causing your pain. Only then will we be able to formulate a successful treatment plan.

What if I feel pain in my bicep area? Pain down the front or side of your shoulder, especially pain at night, is a very common symptom of a rotator cuff problem. Interestingly, patients with rotator cuff pain often do not complain of shoulder pain itself. Rather, they say the pain goes down the outside of their arm. There can be many reasons for pain in the biceps region, and it is critical to perform a thorough history and physical to help figure this out.

Ask the owner of the vehicle if he/she has any history on the vehicle, any recent repairs, maintenance receipts… Ask why he/she is selling the vehicle. You may get a break on the price if you learn more about the reason of the sale.7. Once you purchase the vehicle of your dreams, contact an insurance company that understands classic cars and purchase “Classic Car Insurance”.8. Invest in regular detailing of the vehicle. Classic cars require attention. Make sure that you get your car cleaned, buffed, waxed and glazed on a regular basis – a minimum of twice per year. This should include conditioning

the leather interiors, cleaning the seats and applying tire dressing.9. Make sure that you celebrate your new investment by driving it every now and then.

If you are anything like me, you probably admire a classic car for its beauty. You enjoy looking at it, touching it, feeling the lines and curves on the body and feasting your eyes on its interior!

If you are anything like me, you probably discuss with enthusiasm, passion and excitement a restoration project of an antique car or truck.

If you are anything like me, you will understand that it requires patience and diligence of spending months or even years tracking down the classic car of your dreams, and have to use your ingenuity and your ability to connect with fellow enthusiasts and make new friends just by talking about a car, or should I say “the car”?

The passion in the enthusiasts’ eyes and the love for the car and for the process of dreaming, buying, and restoring classic and vintage cars is evident and thus the creation of car clubs. The ultimate dream of many of us would be to be able to collect those classic cars. Even Jay Leno has a garage full of classic and collectible cars and his garage holds 130 cars!

So, you have already set your mind on getting a classic car; here are few pointers to get started:

1. Do your due diligence to research and find your most favorite classic car to own. Try to learn about the different cars and the value of these cars in the long term unless you are just purchasing that classic car for emotional reasons (reminds you of your childhood/ it is the first car your father owned/ or just because you like the lines and curves on a specific vehicle). Keep in mind that classic cars are a good investment too.2. Figure out a budget or a rough estimate on the purchase of the car and the cost to restore it (if the need arises).3. Make sure that you have the space to garage the vehicle because classic/antique cars don’t have the rust protection and are a valuable commodity, so we need to make sure that it is parked in a designated covered space.4. Find the right mechanic, body and paint shop for maintenance, paint, or just for the basic oil changes and tire rotation.5. You found the car of choice; make sure that you contact the

THE CRACKER CATTLEA FLORIDA ORIGINAL

As descendants of the Spanish cattle brought to Florida in the 1500s, The Florida Cracker Cattle breed goes back centuries. State records show that in one 10-year period, from 1868-1878, 1.6 million head of Florida cattle were transported via ship to Cuba, Nassau and Key West. At that time, Florida was the United States' leading cattle exporter; these ranches were the precursors to Florida's vast agricultural economy. In the late 19th century, purebred beef and dairy breeds from Northern Europe were imported to the state; these cattle, crossed with the earlier Spanish cattle, likely influenced the genetic makeup of what we now know as Florida cracker cattle. According to the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer services, "In 1970, Mrs. Zona Bass and Mrs. Zetta Hunt, daughters of pioneer cattleman James Durrance, donated five heifers and a bull -- descendants of their father's original herd -- to the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services on behalf of the Florida Cattlemen's Association. The old cracker cattle of this ranch were regarded by many in the industry as the purest of the pure. With this small herd, the Department was entrusted with the preservation of the breed."

MAKING NEW FRIENDS

used as a storage unit for batteries, the occasional opened bottle of Chardonnay, and treats for my poodle. Needless to say, food is not normally a subject that I feel strongly about one way or another. Throw a protein bar or a vegetable tray on the table, and dinner is served. I place more emphasis on culinary preparation for the aforementioned dog than I do for human consumption. This is not a secret to those individuals within my close circle of family and friends.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy most anything someone else takes the time to prepare. Just don't ask me to cook. Ever.

It is through necessity, and this clearly communicated unwillingness to learn how to operate an oven that I have learned how to adapt nicely to most available food options. I consider this an engaging personality trait. I am officially "not picky". But no bugs. I draw the line at bugs.

So I find it interesting how many cultures focus celebrations around feasts and specially prepared dishes. While I do reminisce about Thanksgiving dinners with family members, my most memorable food experiences are typically associated with a certain place and time. There

was that evening in Morocco when I tried a pastilla, an odd combination of pigeon, phyllo dough and powdered sugar. And more recently the Irish pub that served me three sausages skewered on mini swords, hovering in mid air six inches above my plate. Now that caused some raised eyebrows with the other dinner guests!

But my most favorite meal was not elaborate, nor presented with any fanfare. Many years ago, I had the opportunity to spend time visiting with a small mountain village in Fiji. I slept in a thatched hut, swam in rivers during the day, and drank kava in the evening. Nasty stuff, that kava. Tasted like water you may have washed socks in, and always made my tongue numb.

One afternoon, Miriam, the chief 's daughter, took me to visit her uncle. The family of six lived in a lean-to shelter built cliffside, overlooking a beautiful mountain vista. After a short visit, her relatives invited us back to have breakfast with them the next morning. Because they seemed to have so little, I didn't want to impose and cause them additional work. I tried politely to decline. They wouldn't allow it, so we agreed to come at sunrise the next morning....

Upon our arrival we were greeted with smiles and hugs all around. I can say with all honesty

that I never felt more welcome, nor had I ever met happier people than this small family. When we sat down on in a semi-circle on the ground, small bowls were passed down to each person. And then a plate that had a tubular vegetable that resembled a potato, and dollop of something cooked and green was passed in my direction. Our hillside breakfast was to consist of watercress harvested from the river, cassava root, and steaming milk (from the cow that was grazing about 20 feet from me).

This is the point at which I should tell you it was delicious. Alas, it was not. It was one of my best performances, and I'd like to believe that I was able to convince my gracious hosts that I enjoyed every morsel. I don't believe I will ever have any craving to drink boiled milk. Ever again. But I did enjoy that day and that moment, and in an odd way, I enjoyed even the meal itself.

While there are many foodies out there that continually are on a quest to seek out the best steak or the ultimate marinade, I'm going to continue to experience those precious moments that allow me to break bread with wonderful people that I may have little, if anything, in common with. Because no matter what, we've all got to stop for a moment to eat.

By Teana McDonald

SHOULD YOU PUT

This is a question that I’ve struggled with all of my life. It applies to so many different aspects, like when I’m on vacation in Vegas

and wondering if I should put all of my chips on a single number while playing roulette. Or should I make that huge business investment that might or might not pay off? I think we all struggle with risk (even the risk takers) as entrepreneurs, solopreneurs, employees and executives. Indecisiveness and hesitation could be major setbacks and obstacles in our personal and professional lives if we don’t take risks or step outside of the box every now and then. There’s always a process that every individual should take before deciding IF you should put all of your eggs in one basket- I’ll share mine:

Make a ListI know it sounds clichéd, but the good old-fashioned list of pros and cons does work. What would the benefits be if you did take the plunge and bet it all on one chance? What would be the impact if you won or if you lost? The list is effective but can cause you to overthink and over-analyze things too. The goal is to keep it short and sweet. Make a promise to yourself that whatever side of the list wins (pros or cons), that’s the side that you will stick with. If you need a second opinion, just ask someone other than your mother or spouse for an objective opinion.

Rally the TroopsThis is one that I use quite frequently (over a few adult beverages). Ask your business friends and networking buddies to join you for some light bites and cocktails to discuss a major decision that you’re thinking about moving forward with. Don’t ask just any friend; ask the business friends that are knowledgeable about their industry and whose opinion you value. The goal is to obtain sound advice from a group of

industry leaders. Lawyers, CPAs, and marketing professionals are just a few examples. Form your own free business advisory council and gather the folks that will provide you with solid information to make the right decision. Did I mention that it’s free?

Gut InstinctWomen’s intuition, gut instinct, butterflies - or whatever you like to call that strong feeling in your gut that gives you a sense or feeling about how to proceed with a major decision – is another option. You know exactly what I’m referring to. It’s that voice or feeling that influences your choice. Sometimes the feeling is on the money and sometimes the feeling could be mistaken for fear,

anxiety or pressure. When you experience this situation, take a step back and use another option as a backup just to be on the safe side. This is how I operate, but there are those who go with their instinct and make a decision on the spot. That’s fine too. Either way, don’t beat yourself up if the outcome is not in your favor. It’s a lesson learned.

Stick a Pin in ItUnless it’s a matter of life or death, you don’t have to make an immediate decision. It’s fine to put it on hold for a short amount of time and revisit it at a later date. Take the time to do some research, map out a strategy and sleep on it. I have found that making any decision on the spot never works for me.

It’s irrational, rushed and usually the wrong one. Write it on a post -it note and stick a pin in it on your bulletin board.

Wh e t h e r y o u decide to put all of your eggs

in one basket or not, it’s your decision to make. You have a 50/50 chance to get it right. Ask yourself, would you rather take a chance and hope for the best outcome or look back and wonder what would’ve happened if you did?

What is your favorite role that you have played?I have to say it has to be “Brothers & Sisters”. There are so many reasons, but the most important was the fact that this show was loved by absolutely everyone, was ahead of its time and with such an amazing stellar cast. Like I said before, every time I was going to work I felt like a kid going to Disneyland for the first time. I played Luc Laurent on the show and the writers were always trying to find meaningful ways to make my character someone far away from the Walker family, someone to a certain degree perfect for Sarah. It was intricate to play and very different from what my own life experience was when it came down to love and relationships. I loved to play Luc....How have these roles changed your life if at all?I don't think any of the roles I played changed my life when we are talking of my own personal life. Yes, to a certain degree by playing someone else you have tendency sometimes to integrate some of their life traits but not to the extent of changing something in your life. I kind of always left that at the studio. My wife would complain sometimes that I was more demanding when I was working a lot and she always said it was because they are treating actors on set like

royalty, pretty much explaining to me to come back to reality… Lol lol. What do you enjoy most about your career? The fact that every single day is absolutely different, to be challenged and also to know that somehow you make someone out there feel something about your performance. I love to entertain so being an actor is a blessing to me. You will never hear me complain...Can we expect a book from you?Not really sure, maybe one day. I have so much more to do and accomplish...Do you post for your own sites or do you have your assistants do the posts?I do it all myself. I told my fans during Dancing With The Stars that I will make sure not to get a big head and always stay in touch with my friends out there on the Internet. I have a dear friend of mine, Linda, who also takes care of my website when it comes down to changing stuff there and she does a forum from time to time, she also created a Facebook page called the “Gilles Marini Official Forum” (facebook.com/OfficialGillesMariniForum); she is very good with this internet thingy and always surprises me...

Tell us what to expect next from you...what other projects are you working on?Well I am here in Atlanta, GA shooting the season of “Devious Maids”. So far the cast and crew have been terrific to me, I live in the middle of the city and I love it. I’ll be shooting until mid-July. After that I will be shooting other films during my time off the show and encouraging fans to support me by watching the show when it returns…
