(2) Glossiness of Uncarved Jade – Special Auction of Cui Ruzhuo [VII]

| 2pm, 3rd October

As one of the China‟s most important contemporary artist and the most expensive living artist, Cui Ruzhuo masters a

unique kind of artistry beyond traditions. „Glossiness of Uncarved Jade: Grand Exhibition of Cui Ruzhuo‟ opened its

curtain at the Meridian Gate of the Palace Museum in February this year. The harmonious marriage of Cui‟s

sophisticated and vigourous style and the Gate‟s magnificent vistas symbolises the evolution and heritage of Chinese

ink wash. This September, Cui will showcase his work at Manezh Central Exhibition Hall in St. Petersburg, Russia,

followed by the „Glossiness of Uncarved Jade‟ grand exhibition at Manezh Central Exhibition Hall, Moscow in

October.

The technique of ink piling was pioneered by Huang Binhong and further developed by Li Keran. Cui Ruzhuo took the sophisticated artistry to new heights, while also mastering Zhang Daqian‟s splashed ink painting techniques. Cui also blended Pan Tianshou‟s renowned finger-ink painting of flowers and birds into his very own aesthetics. Cui‟s extraordinary combination of ink piling, finger-ink and splashed ink paintings on large-scale paintings consolidated his unprecedented status as China‟s ink painting maestro. The auction presents 32 of Cui Ruzhuo‟s remarkable works, including in particular his 96-foot „Lotus in the Autumn Wind‟ noted for the significant contrast of the delicate lotus and dark leaves depicted with the technique of ink piling against the rugged rocks in the background. Cui‟s mastery of brushstrokes manifests the spirit and aesthetics of Chinese ink art.

(4) Memories of the Past – Important Collection from Mr. Wang Boqun and the

Republic Period | 6:30pm, 3rd October

The late Mr Wang Boqun, political leader of the Republic Period, was an ardent collector of paintings, calligraphy,

doubt, one of the most sought-after segments of the season.

Born in Xingyi, Guizhou; Wang Boqun (1885-1944) was an influential figure in pivotal historic events such as the

of Nanjing‟s Nationalist Government, Member of the Central Executive Committee and Committee Member of the

Nationalist Government. Besides closely associated with influential politicians in the likes of Sun Yat-sen and Chiang

Kai-shek, the illustrious personage was in close touch with legendary painters and calligraphists. Impressed by his

revolutionary visions, art maestros such as Xu Beihong, Zhang Daqian, Pu Ru and Yu Youren would gift Wang with

This auction comprises the most influential maestros in the likes of Zhang Daqian, Xu Beihong, Li Keran, Fu Baoshi. The auction will also feature ‘Autumn of Mount E'mei’, one of the most important still life paintings by Li Keran in the 1950s. In addition to an incisive and imposing conception, the technique of ink piling also evokes a serene and noble mentality. Although essentially a still life, „Autumn of Mount E'mei’ paves the way to the classic „red landscapes‟ series in the later stage of Li‟s artistic career. More than outlining autumn leaves, red ink is piled up in a naturalistic way to depict rugged cliff on the background. The painting is featured in the artist‟s still life album published by Beijing‟s People‟s Fine Arts Publishing House in 1959. The book is one of the few publications compiling the most important works of the artist.
