Global Water Technologies announced plans to expand its opportuni-

ties in the emerging smart water sector with the addition of two new

acquisitions.

The first addition is a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) platform to pro-

vide better data to utility customers on usage analytics. GreenSuite

helps users track their consumption, make plans to improve efficiency,

learn more about sustainability and earn rewards for such activities.

The software can also be used as a demand-side tool for utilities.

A second acquisition brings expertise and technologies in the water

Centrisys Corporation has begun replacing a 13 dewatering cen-

trifuge systems at the Wards Island Wastewater Treatment Plant in

New York City.

Industrial waste management company Newalta Corp. of Calgary,

Alberta and DuPont Canada, a unit of chemical company DuPont of

Wilmington, Del., have signed an agreement under which the two

companies will develop a technology to treat wastewater generated by

oil and gas production activities in Alberta.

Siemens Water Technologies and Texas A&M AgriLife Research

have signed an exclusive license agreement and a research and devel-

opment agreement to continue to develop and commercialize a chemi-

cal-based technology to more efficiently and cost-effectively remove

heavy metals from water and wastewater at power utility, mining,

refinery and remediation sites. In a single process unaffected by tem-

perature or pH-levels, the technology can remove selenium, mercury,

zinc, copper, chromium and other heavy metals as well as metalloids

to meet National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES)

limits. The commercialized system is being designed to occupy a

smaller footprint than current remediation treatment systems to reduce

capital expense and to operate more efficiently in a wider range of

environments.

their self-manufactured products for the recently completed 14,000 sq.

ft. New Mexico Consortium Biological Laboratory located in Los

Production is slated to begin in October as they move operations from

their Marathon plant in Yerington, Nevada to the new Phoenix loca-

important for unmanned containment areas where oil contaminated

stormwater could runoff or overflow into the environment. SPI’s

Water, in and of itself, is quite an amazing commodity. It is one of

the building blocks of life—organisms ranging from human to plants

to animals cannot survive without it. Municipalities could not exist

without a readily available supply of water, teamed with the munici-

pality’s ability to consistently deliver that water to a wide array of,

for example, residences, businesses , hospitals and community cen-

ters.

The operations in many of the world’s major industries would also

halt without water, which is used as an ingredient in thousands of fin-

ished products, from food to cosmetics. Water is also used as a clean-

ing or cooling agent for equipment in many heavy-duty industrial-

equipment applications. In instances like these, water often becomes

wastewater, which must either be treated or disposed of. With empha-

sis being placed on environmental responsibility in many industries,

this means that proper wastewater handling and treatment is becom-

ing more and more crucial.

So, with water playing such a critical role in the lives and industries

of Earth’s inhabitants, there is paramount need for pumping technolo-

gy that can efficiently, reliably and safely handle water, from its most

pristine state to the soiled variety that flows into a water-treatment

facility. Wastewater can be especially problematic for pumping

equipment because it can become fouled with abrasives or solids that

can harm pumps, or hazardous materials that must be contained in

order to protect the safety of plant personnel and the environment.

This white paper will highlight why one type of pumping technolo-

gy—positive displacement peristaltic (hose) pumps—can rise to the

challenges inherent in the handling and treatment of water and waste-

water in any of a wide variety of municipal and industrial applica-

tions.

The Challenge

The design and operational characteristics of peristaltic (hose) pump

technology, which was patented in 1925 in France, make it a wise

choice in a wide range of waterhandling applications—from moving

viscous and/or abrasive slurries to the transfer of water-thin, nonlu-

bricating fluids and shear-sensitive materials. These characteristics

make peristaltic (hose) pumps ideal for the full array of diverse oper-

ations within the water-and-wastewater industry.

Peristaltic (hose) pumps satisfy the requirements of such a wide

range of water-and-wastewater applica-

tions because their operation is based on

the alternating contraction and relaxation

of the hose, forcing the contents to move

through the pump and into the discharge

piping. A smooth-wall, flexible hose is

fitted in the pump casing and

is squeezed between shoes on the rotor

and the inside of the pump casing. This

rotating action moves the product

through the hose at a constant rate of

displacement. The hose restitution after

the squeeze produces an almost full vac-

uum that draws the product into the hose

from the intake piping. The pump casing

is lubricated to cool the pump and lengthen the service life of the

shoes and hose. Since the product only contacts the hose and not the

internal pump components, this pumping technology is very suitable

for abrasive and corrosive applications.

This pump style also maintains excellent volumetric consistency,

making it ideal for the strict dosing and 24/7 operating cycles that

can be required in wastewater treatment applications. The pump’s

seal-free design makes it dry-run, self-priming and low-slip capable,

and eliminates any potential leak or contamination points while

simultaneously providing superior suction lift. Finally, peristaltic

(hose) pumps are easy to operate and easy to maintain. The pump’s

reversible operation also allows for pumping in both directions.

In order to successfully handle the challenges of water-and-waste-

water handling and treatment, the peristaltic pump’s hose—which,

because of its seal-less design, is the only component to actually

come in contact with the pumped medium—needs to achieve the

highest level of material compatibility, while also being able to rel-

iably deliver the millions of pumping cycles that are required

during its lifetime.

Another consideration when selecting a hose material is its “fatigue

resistance.” This trait defines how resistant to failure the hose materi-

al is as it runs through its millions of pumping cycles. A hose materi-

al that is susceptible to developing cracks and holes relatively early

in its operational life is not as desirable as a material that can reliably

handle the demands of the repeated contraction and relaxation of the

hose, especially when particulate-laden liquids are being pumped.

The reinforced construction of the peristaltic hose and its use of rub-

ber compositions that have been specially designed for the stresses

within the peristaltic hose allow for the optimum life cycle and per-

formance.

The Solution

Abaque Series pumps feature a seal-free design that eliminates leaks

and product contamination, which enables them to handle the tough-

est water-and-wastewater pumping applications, from abrasive and

aggressive fluids to shear-sensitive and viscous materials. The

pumps, which can run in either forward or reverse, are self-priming

and offer suction-lift capabilities to 9 meters (25.5 feet), as well as

the ability to run dry continuously without adversely affecting the

pump’s performance. Ductile-iron and steel construction lets the

pump produce discharge pressures as high as 16 bar (232 psi).

Abaque pumps are available in 10 different sizes and 19 total models

with flow rates ranging from 1.7 to 1,249 L/min (0.46 to 330 gpm).

They have been designed to handle products with water-like viscosi-

ties to those as high as 70,000 cSt (352,000 SSU), solid particle sizes

from 1.5 mm to 18 mm (0.06 inches to 0.71 inches) and soft particle

sizes from 1.5 mm to 31 mm (0.06 inches to 1.22 inches). All Abaque

pumps can handle product temperatures ranging from 0ºC to 70ºC

(32ºF to 158ºF) with models featuring an EPDM hose capable of han-

dling maximum temperatures to 80ºC (176ºF). Optional equipment

includes hose-failure detectors, vacuum kits and non-metallic (PPH

and PVDF) inserts.

Conclusion

The water-and-wastewater universe is one of the most diverse in the

global economy. This diversity means that the pumps used in all

types of water-and-wastewater operations must be nimble and versa-

tile enough to cope with fluids with many different levels of viscosi-

ty, temperature, corrosiveness, toxicity, abrasiveness and particulate

levels, to name a few. These varying product characteristics must also

be successfully handled while adhering to strict production quotas

and environmental requirements. For more than 80 years, peristaltic

(hose) pump technology has been a leading choice for water-and-

wastewater handlers and treaters who know the value of highly reli-

able, environmentally friendly, maintenance-free pump operation.

The scientific and regulatory communities have long been aware of

the potential for migration of vapors from contaminated subsurface

areas into buildings. As a result, in 2002 the US EPA issued draft

guidance that provided recommendations for determining whether the

vapor intrusion pathway posed a risk to human health at cleanup

sites. These guidelines led to the development of two EPA methods,

TO-15 and TO-17, for the determination of toxic volatile organic

compounds (VOCs) in air. In Method TO-15, the vapor is collected

in a metal (summa) canister, withdrawn and concentrated onto an

adsorbent trap. The sample is then desorbed from the trap and

focused onto a GC column for separation and detected by mass spec-

trometry. However, there are several limitations with the TO-15

approach, because it only recovers up to naphthalene (nC10), while

several regulatory directives require measurements up to at least

nC13. In addition, many soil gas samples contain diesel vapors, and

canisters cannot recover higher boiling components of diesel. Other

challenges include high moisture content and the requirement for a

greater number of analytes over a wide range of concentrations.

Method TO-17 overcomes many of these problems by using a sor-

bent tube instead of a metal canister, containing adsorbent material

specifically selected to trap the analytes of interest. The soil vapor is

sampled through the tube, and then desorbed onto a secondary trap

into the analytical column to be analyzed by GC/MS.

CARO Analytical Services

CARO Analytical Services, headquartered in British Columbia, is

considered one of the leading authorities on soil vapor analysis in

North America, having authored several reports on the sampling and

analysis of VOCs in soil gas samples. However, they were aware

that current tube technology was incapable of recovering higher boil-

ing components such as diesel, while still being able to capture the

low boiling point gases. In addition, the Canadian Council of

Ministers of the Environment (CCME) wanted to add aromatic

hydrocarbons above naphthalene to the target analyte list. These

directives led CARO to look for innovative ways to analyze higher

boiling point compounds. The challenge they faced was that there

were no thermal desorption tubes available that could fully support

the new regulations. It was clear they had to come up with a solution

that could handle the full range of components from the most volatile

gases through to C24, in order to fully meet the demands of their

clients.

Collaboration

This led CARO to approach PerkinElmer for their expertise in ther-

mal desorption and air monitoring. This collaboration eventually

resulted in the design of a new adsorbent tube with the following

capabilities:

• Extends analyte range beyond naphthalene

• Achieves high recovery of the high boiling components

• Ensures retention of the most volatile components during sam-

pling

• Contains adsorbents that do not produce target artifacts

• Enables quick clean-up of the tubes with no carry-over

• Optimizes water management

• Increases sampling volumes to achieve regulatory detection

limits

The tube contains multiple layers of different charcoal-based sor-

bents, arranged so that the sample is exposed to increasingly stronger

sorbents as it penetrates the tube. This design prevents the absorption

of the heavier components onto the stronger sorbents that would oth-

erwise not release them. Instead, the heavier components are

adsorbed onto the weaker sorbents in the front of the tube, while the

lighter components are adsorbed onto the stronger sorbents in the

back end of the tube. The weaker sorbents protect the strong adsor-

bents from irreversible adsorption and leave the tube clean after one

desorption cycle. The new tube, which is shown in Figure 1, handles

the broadest possible analyte range from dichlorodifluoromethane

(nC3) to phenanthrene (nC24).

Real-World Capability

A critical factor in the performance of an adsorbent is the “break-

through volume”, which is defined as the volume sampled when the

amount of analyte collected in a backup sorbent tube reaches 5% of

the total amount collected by both sorbent tubes. The results from a

rigorous, real-world experiment of spiking a sample in triplicate with

0.3 µg of 83 VOC mixture, 0.25 µg of a suite of polynuclear aromat-

ic hydrocarbons and 10 µg of diesel using a flow rate of 100 mL/min

of humidified nitrogen for 100 minutes, detected only two compo-

nents that showed a slight breakthrough - dichlorofluoromethane

(1%) and choromethane (5.4%). Figure 2 illustrates this experiment

in greater detail.

Another very important performance criterion is spike recovery,

which involves the analysis of a blank tube and then re-analyzing the

spiked tube described earlier to determine if all analytes are desorbed

off the tube from the first desorption. The table below demonstrates

the excellent recovery of the higher boiling point analytes.

Summary

There is no question that this collaboration has resolved traditional

limitations in sampling and detection capability associated with soil

vapor analysis and air sampling in general. It has resulted in a ther-

mal desorption tube that is clearly better suited to solve real-world

application problems than previous designs. This has enabled CARO

Analytical Services to develop procedures to analyze a wider range

of soil gas samples, achieve significantly lower detection limits and

meet the demands of its customers.

Around 90 % of city dwellers in the European Union (EU) are

exposed to one of the most damaging air pollutants at levels deemed

harmful to health by the World Health Organisation (WHO). This

result comes from the latest assessment of air quality in Europe,

published by the European Environment Agency (EEA).

The report, ‘Air quality in Europe – 2013 report’, is an EEA contri-

bution to the European Commission’s review of air quality policy

and the EU ‘Year of Air’.

Vehicles, industry, agriculture and homes are contributing to air pol-

lution in Europe. Despite falling emission levels and reductions of

some air pollutant concentrations in recent decades, the report

demonstrates that Europe’s air pollution problem is far from solved.

Two specific pollutants, particulate matter and ground-level ozone,

continue to be a source of breathing problems, cardiovascular dis-

ease and shortened lives. New scientific findings show that human

health can be harmed by lower concentrations of air pollution than

previously thought.

Hans Bruyninckx, EEA Executive Director, said: “Air pollution is

causing damage to human health and ecosystems. Large parts of the

population do not live in a healthy environment, according to cur-

rent standards. To get on to a sustainable path, Europe will have to

be ambitious and go beyond current legislation.”

Environment Commissioner Janez Potočnik added: “Air quality is a

central concern for many people. Surveys show that a large majority

of citizens understand well the impact of air quality on health and

are asking public authorities to take action at EU, national and local

levels, even in times of austerity and hardship. I am ready to

respond to these concerns through the Commission’s upcoming Air

Policy Review.”

Between 2009 and 2011, up to 96 % of city dwellers were exposed

to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) concentrations above WHO

guidelines and up to 98 % were exposed to ozone (O3) levels above

WHO guidelines. Lower proportions of EU citizens were exposed to

levels of these pollutants exceeding the limits or targets set out in

EU legislation. These EU limits or targets are in certain cases less

strict than WHO guidelines. It is not just cities - some rural areas

also have significant levels of air pollution, the report notes.

National differences across Europe are presented in a series of coun-

try fact-sheets accompanying the main findings. There have been

several success stories in cutting emissions of air pollutants – for

example, sulphur dioxide emissions from power plants, industry and

transport have been reduced over the last decade, reducing expo-

sure. Phasing out leaded petrol has also reduced concentrations of

lead, found to affect neurological development.

Eutrophication

Alongside health concerns, the report also highlights environmental

problems such as eutrophication, which is when excessive nutrient

nitrogen damages ecosystems, threatening biodiversity.

Eutrophication is still a widespread problem that affects most

European ecosystems.

Emissions of some nitrogen-containing pollutants have decreased,

for example, emissions of nitrogen oxides and ammonia have fallen

by 27 % and 7 % respectively since 2002. However, emissions were

not reduced as much as anticipated, with eight EU Member States

breaching legal ceilings a year after the deadline for compliance. To

address eutrophication, further measures are needed to reduce emis-

sions of nitrogen.

The natural gas production industry is experiencing record growth.

The gas reserves in the United States are thought to hold enough nat-

ural gas for hundreds of years and the gas and oil industry has

improved extraction techniques that make gas production more

affordable and less impactful on the landscape.

The Midstream Process

Midstream gas processing plants are complicated production facili-

ties. These plants process large quantities of natural gas and hydro-

carbons. Safety comes first at every site and high quality standards

drive every decision. Natural gas has to be processed to very

demanding industry standards.

The process involves cleaning

natural gas of harmful impurities

and water. When natural gas is

extracted from the ground it con-

tains high amounts of CO2,

water, and corrosive sulfur com-

pounds. A common processing

operation includes glycol dehy-

dration and amine stripping. An

amine stripper is a counter cur-

rent stripping operation where

natural gas is directed into the bottom of a tall tower and an amine

liquid solution is poured into the top of the tower. As the gas contacts

the liquid, the CO2, water, and H2S impurities are adsorbed from that

gas and held in the liquid. The natural gas is now processed and

ready to be directed to the downstream users. The amine system uses

a re-boiler that boils off the CO2, water, other VOC’s, and H2S so the

amine solution can be re-used. The vent gas from the re-boiler is the

subject to EPA guidelines; 40 CFR, Part 63, Subpart HH. Under this

rule, greater than 95 percent of the pollutants must be destroyed

before release to atmosphere.

The Problem

The typical off gas from an amine treatment system is rich in CO2,

contains substantial amounts of water, and varying concentrations of

hydrogen sulfide (H2S). These three components combine to form a

corrosive gas that has a tendency to condense and form a corrosive

liquid. The gas also contains a variety of hydrocarbons such as;

methane, ethane, propane, butane, benzene and others, all in varying

concentrations. To further complicate the abatement plan, the gas

contains no oxygen. Oxygen is a necessary ingredient when “oxidiz-

ing” VOC’s.

Given the complications the vent gas presents, many operators have

opted to use flares as the abatement device. However, flares have

several drawbacks that prevent efficient operation and under recently

proposed EPA changes to the rules, flares will surely be discontinued

in many future plant designs. (See, for example, 40 CFR, Part 63.11b

for flare design criteria that will apply to flare installations in the

future). As a replacement technology for flares, thermal VOC abate-

ment can be broken down into two common technologies:

1. Catalytic Oxidation uses a catalyst to initiate conversion of hydro-

carbons to CO2 and water vapor at low temperatures. However, given

the presence of sulfur compounds (sulfur is a catalyst poison),

Catalytic Oxidation is not a good long term choice.

2. Thermal Oxidation is a process by which the vent gas is raised to

1,400°F, held in a reaction chamber where the hydrocarbons are oxi-

dized to CO2 and water vapor. Thermal Oxidation provides very high

destruction efficiency and is considered a safer method than flaring.

Gas processors are now focused on efficient operations of their

plants. The old school mentality of the gas processor did not consider

natural gas fuel efficiency because they had an unlimited supply of

the fuel. Now the modern gas processing facility understands the gas

they use in their operations is less gas they can sell downstream.

Plus, EPA considers Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions as a regulated

air pollutant. Methane, the primary component in natural gas, is a

GHG with a Global Warming Potential 21 times that of carbon diox-

ide, according to the EPA. Midstream processors have multiple

issues to think about when designing their plants:

• Reliable VOC abatement systems

• Long lasting designs that consider the corrosive nature of the vent

gas

• Safe designs that are capable of operating in hazardous areas

• Fuel efficient to help lower processing costs, provide more product

for sale, and limit GHG emissions

The Solution

For a successful project, the processor should work with a company

that has a long history in the petro-industries, offers a complete prod-

uct line, has the knowledge to integrate a safe system, and a support

staff with a proven track record of success.

Next, a thorough review of the expected vent gas must be conducted.

As noted earlier, different natural gas regions have different varieties

of gas, and thus different vent gases can be expected. Once the vent

gas has been defined the final choice of abatement technology can be

considered.

Thermal Oxidation can be segmented into three primary technologies

for the natural gas processor:

• Regenerative Thermal Oxidation – uses ceramic media and switch

ing valves

• Recuperative Thermal Oxidation – uses traditional shell and tube

heat exchanger

• Non-recuperative Thermal Oxidation – commonly called an after-

burner or combustor, this system does not employ heat recovery.

These systems easily meet EPA requirements, but consume substan-

tial amounts of fuel.

We consider all three systems appropriate technology, but the final

choice is usually based on the expected amount of VOC’s contained

in the vent gas. If the vent gas contains low amounts of VOC (usually

less than 10 percent of the LEL) then the Regenerative Thermal

Oxidizer (RTO) is an appropriate device. However, if the vent gas

contains higher LEL or upset conditions that may exceed 25 percent,

then the Recuperative Thermal Oxidizer is a better choice. Certain

circumstances may point to the use of the non-recuperative Thermal

Oxidizer, but considering the high fuel use, these systems are

Mine Water Treatment Plant uses Zero Liquid Waste Process to Improve Water Quality of Monongahela River Watershed

Veolia Water, a water and wastewater services and technologies com-

pany, has successfully commissioned and begun operational manage-

ment of the CONSOL Energy Inc. Northern West Virginia Water

Treatment Facility near Mannington, W.Va. The Zero Liquid Waste

(ZLW) facility designed and built by Veolia will treat 3,500 gallons

per minute of mine drainage. By employing a ZLW process, water of

low quality is extracted and treated, and clean water is returned to the

ecosystem, improving the water balance and condition of the

Monongahela River watershed.

Veolia will provide operational management of the facility for the

next 10 years, guaranteeing CONSOL continual performance and

optimization of the system. The ZLW treatment concept removes

contaminants in the mine water and reduces them to solid salts. The

process also uses a number of sustainable practices and technology

applications, reducing the carbon and energy footprint of the treat-

ment process.

This environmentally sustainable design and construction approach

was developed to help CONSOL meet discharge standards for chlo-

rides in West Virginia’s waterways. The facility will treat water from

time, under budget, and in full compliance with our permits,” com-

To quantify the benefits of the water treatment facility to the

Monongahela River, Veolia conducted a Water Impact Index (WIIX)

evaluation. Developed by Veolia, the WIIX measures not only water

volume, but the level of stress upon local water resources, overall

water quality and indirect water impacts from chemicals and electric-

ity. Measuring all these factors, the WIIX calculates the water impact

of the new treatment facility will be 1.3 billion gallons of high-quali-

ty water per year returned to the Monongahela River basin, validating

a positive environmental impact by the water treatment facility.

The U.S. Environmental Protection

Agency (EPA) is soliciting ideas and

input from the public and stakeholders

about the best Clean Air Act approaches

to reducing carbon pollution from existing power plants. Power plants are

the nation’s largest stationary source of carbon pollution, responsible for about

one third of all greenhouse gas pollution in the United States.

The feedback will play an important role in the effective guidelines that reflect

the latest and best information available. The agency will seek additional public

input during the notice and comment period once it issues a proposal, by June

2014.

EPA is holding eleven listening sessions across the country to solicit ideas and

input from the public and stakeholders. The Pacific Northwest listening session

will be held:
