Week 1

AnnouncementsHi class!

As you might have guessed, I am your teacher for the semester. My name is Patricia Murphy but please feel free to call me Trish or Professor Trish or Prof Murph, or any other friendly moniker you feel comfortable with.

I am 35 years old and I am originally from Cincinnati, Ohio. I have two cats and one dog, and I love to train for sporting events. Last October I raced in the SOMA half Ironman triathlon. It was so much fun. This semester I will be training for the Cincinnati Flying Pigs marathon which takes place May 7th. I love having a goal to work towards.

I also love to travel, and my husband and I have a promise to each other to visit a new country every year. Last year we went to Argentina for the first time. It was one of the greatest places I have ever visited. I think this year we will be back in Europe, perhaps in Croatia or Spain.

This is my 13th year teaching at ASU, and I have really enjoyed meeting all of my students along the way. I hope to have a great semester with all of you. Please log on and introduce yourselves.

Trish

Lecture Notes

Hi Class,

Welcome to English 102, First-Year Composition. This class focuses on academic research and writing. I have taught this class 30 times at ASU, and my students continue to amaze me with unique topics, strong writing, and excellent research. I hope this session will bring more of that.

Please note the following due dates for our first week (these can also be found under the “Course Schedule” area):

Read: Course Website thoroughly and post any questions to Questions about the Course Board Read: Paper 1 & Paper 2 Assignments and post any questions to Questions about the Course Board Read: Chapter 1 Everything is an Argument Read: Chapter 20 Intellectual Property WJ1: First, state your major, or if you don’t have one, your field of inquiry. Read the current paper assignment and make a list of 3 potential topics. For each potential topic answer the following questions: Why are you interested in the topic? What makes the topic controversial? How much do you already know about the topic? Rate the topics in order from most unique to most common. Describe the ratings and why you chose them. Finally, write a 300 word description of the topic you have chosen for the current paper. Include a discussion of background information you have on the topic and where you found it.

Page 4: Policies - public.asu.edutrishm/worddocs/.../ENG102.doc · Web viewLast October I raced in the SOMA half Ironman triathlon. It was so much fun. This semester I will be training for

The goal of this class is to introduce you to the rigors of writing and research at the University level, preparing you to excel at writing tasks you will receive in your future classes. For that reason I have designed a sequence of Writer’s Journals, Annotated Bibliographies, and Papers that will help challenge you to research and write in topics in your field.

Because this is a class that will prepare you to write at the University, I will expect your research to come from scholarly sources accessed through the ASU library. If this were a class on writing web pages, popular magazine articles, or newspaper articles, I would ask you to gather source materials from those types of publications. But this is an academic writing class and I therefore expect academic source material. This is a key skill that will set you apart from other students when you get into your upper division coursework, and I want you to succeed no matter what writing and research tasks come your way.

For that reason, the course is divided into a sequence of 2 sets of 2 linked assignments. The first set of assignments asks you to pick a policy, program, or law in your field. The second set of assignments asks you to pick a specific problem in your field. Please start thinking about these two topics now, and pay attention to readings and lectures in your major classes for policies and problems that would be unique and interesting to research and write about.

The sequence of linked assignments includes Research and Writing. First you will gather 10 scholarly sources on your topic, analyzing them in an Annotated Bibliography. Then you will write an academic argument paper using the sources you gathered in your Bibliography.

This week you will complete brainstorming work in your Writer’s Journal to prepare for Paper 1 (an Annotated Bibliography).

To supplement that work you are required to read Chapter 1 Everything is an Argument, Chapter 20 Intellectual Property, Assignment for Paper 1, Assignment for Paper 2. Please note that Papers 1 & 2 are tied together and will cover the same topic, so let’s make sure you pick a good one. You should read both Assignments so that you understand how the topic will manifest in Paper 2.

Writer’s JournalRead the current paper assignment and make a list of 3 potential topics. Why are you interested in each topic? What makes each topic controversial? How much do you already know about each topic? Rate the topics in order from most unique to most common. Describe the ratings and why you chose them.

Week 2

AnnouncementsHi Class,

Thanks so much for Posting your WJ1’s. I have written responses and updated grades in the grade book. Please read through the posts and my responses, since it will give you a better idea of the finer details of the assignment.

I will state this, since I found myself saying it a lot in my responses. The paper assignments 1 & 2 call for you to write about a POLICY, PROGRAM or LAW. You cannot write about “ringworm” for instance, since that is not a policy, a program or a law. You must have a very specific policy, program or law to address or your papers 1 & 2 will fail. So instead of writing on “ringworm” you would study “a preschool’s policy on children with ringworm,” or “a state program to eradicate ringworm” or “a federal law against traveling with ringworm.”

I did ask some of you questions in my responses, and I did ask for more information from some of you. You can post that on the board. I did see some really great topics. Thanks for being creative, unique, and careful with your choices.

Out of 64 students, 11 of you forgot to post. Please note that not only equals an absence, it also lowers your Writer’s Journal grade, which is worth 20% of your final grade. Please be aware that you have a WJ due every week, and it must be turned in on time for credit.

Two notes: First, please do not post attachments in the WJ board. With so many students I don’t have time to keep opening attachments. You will use attachments for Paper Drafts, but not for WJ’s. Second, don’t post work ahead of time. This is not a self-paced course so I need you to follow the calendar.

Your WJ2 is due tomorrow night at midnight. You also have some reading this week, Chapter 21 Assessing and Using Sources, and Chapter 22 Documenting Sources.

Next week (Week 3) you have a first draft of your paper due, so please be gathering sources in the next few weeks so that it does not sneak up on you. Research takes patience and care. To succeed in this course you will need to devote time and energy to your research and writing.

Thanks for your hard work so far.

Trish

Week 3

AnnouncementsHi Class, I hope you had a great weekend.  I can't believe we are in week 3 already!  Your week 3 folder is available in myASU so you can get started on your work there.  You have work due Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday.  I will be grading your papers today from 1-4 pm so you will be able to find those in the student gradebook this evening. I have a few announcements.  First, the good news.  I am very proud of all of you for getting your first paper in on time!  And you all managed to send Word documents, which I think is a first in my online teaching career.  Hooray!  Great job!   Now the bad news.  I received several complaints from students who said that the peer review of their papers were sub-par.  In fact, I read all of the peer reviews and some of them did not follow my directions, most of them did not use the reviewing features in Word, and many of them ignored my assignment entirely and said "great job" on papers that would fail my assignment because they were incomplete and incorrect.   So.  We need to have some serious work on peer review before the next paper.   The first thing you can do is re-read the peer review activity.  I have one with pictures that might help: http://www.public.asu.edu/~trishm/classes/activities/peerreview.html.  You MUST use the reviewing features in Word, not only because it is a good thing for you to learn, but also because it is the easiest, most uniform way for us to comment on each other's work.   The second thing you can do is print out the assignment for paper 2 and read it several times.  Keep it next to you as you compose.  Keep it next to you as you peer review.  I follow the assignments to the letter.  I don't grade you on anything that isn't in the assignment. The assignment states very clearly what your paper needs to include.   I have added the assignments as Word documents to myASU so they are easier to print out.  If you click on the "Papers" button you will see the 4 assignments listed there.  Click on the assignment you wish to print, and under "Assignment Files" you will see a Word doc.  Please print this out, read it closely, highlight important points, and ask questions if you have them.  I promise that everything you need to succeed on the paper is there.  You will also submit your final drafts in this same "Papers" area. Hope this helps.  Overall I am so proud of your work.  This is a challenging class to take in 16 weeks, much less 5 and I am very happy with the work you are doing. Trish

Hi Class,

Great job this week! I have read all the WJ Week 3’s and responded to each of your potential topics. Please read all of my responses in that area so you can get a better understanding of the assignment. I also read your Evidence and Integrating Sources Activities. Great work! I responded to a few of the Integrating Sources activities that forgot signal phrases. Just remember I will expect to see signal phrases when you use source material in your paper.

Page 8: Policies - public.asu.edutrishm/worddocs/.../ENG102.doc · Web viewLast October I raced in the SOMA half Ironman triathlon. It was so much fun. This semester I will be training for

I also read through the drafts of paper 2 and I would like to make some general comments.

Each paper must have a clear claim on the first page of the paper. This will be a declaration, not a question. As the assignment states, “Make a claim that your subject is good/bad, effective/ineffective, best/worst, competent/incompetent, successful/unsuccessful, or any similar comparison of value.” So on the first page of your paper we should see a clear statement that says “The ABC Program is ineffective,” or some variation of that.

Each paragraph should support that claim. Make sure each paragraph has a clear link to the claim. You will need to explain how your argument and evidence support the claim. That is your job, not the reader’s.

Nice work everybody!

Trish

Lecture Notes

Great job! Thanks so much to all of you for getting your first drafts posted on time and correctly. I can’t tell you how much I appreciate your hard work. I have skimmed through the drafts and would like to recommend that you look at these papers as very strong models: Corwin Coppinger and Jessica Stocks. Cory, work a bit on MLA punctuation. Jessica, work a bit on adding more detail to annotations (some are 80 words). But overall these are two really great papers.

One thing that will make it easier to peer review (and I should have thought about this before, sorry) could you put your name in the subject line of your paper post? That will make it easier for you to see who you need to read. All you have to do is “modify” your original message and change the subject line.

Peer Review Instructions****When you reply to this message please erase the subject line and type your name in it. It will make it much easier for you to find your post.****

Your assignment is to read and comment on the three posts below your post using the Reviewing features in Word. If your post is towards the bottom, start again at the top. Each student will read 3 papers and get 3 responses on their work. Please focus on content and organization over grammar and spelling. I will expect to see at least 3 content comments per page of the paper. Focus on the ideas within the paper rather than on the sentence structure and word choice.

General Comments on DraftsI read through all 18 drafts and I would like to make some general comments. Please keep my comments in mind as you are completing peer review.

Scholarly SourcesAs stated in the assignment, you must gather SCHOLARLY SOURCES printed in 2000 or later for this Annotated Bibliography. As I read through many of the papers I saw websites, newspapers, popular magazines and books. You are welcome to use those sources in paper 2 as a supplement to your 10 scholarly sources, but for the annotated bibliography all 10 sources must

Page 9: Policies - public.asu.edutrishm/worddocs/.../ENG102.doc · Web viewLast October I raced in the SOMA half Ironman triathlon. It was so much fun. This semester I will be training for

fit the definition of “Scholarly Sources” as described in the first Activity you completed for the class. (If you have a question on a source, re-visit the “Scholarly Sources” Activity completed in Week 1. If you are having trouble finding scholarly sources please email me.)

As you are completing your peer review, if you can’t tell if an article is scholarly or not, simply copy the name of the journal, paste it into google, and see what comes up. I just did a search on one of Cory’s journals, Food Additives and Contaminants. (Sounds like a fun read.) From the site I can see that all of the editors have academic affiliations, a yearly subscription costs $2140, and the front cover uses no pictures. These are all clues that the journal is scholarly.

AnnotationsEach annotation should be about 100 words long, and must cover the following questions:

Brief summary of the main purpose of the cited work (what is it about?) Author's intellectual/academic credentials (what has the author contributed to the field?) Work's intended audience (who reads the publication?) Significance of the work as a contribution to the field (how groundbreaking or important

is the source?) Possible shortcomings or bias in the work (what is missing from the argument? what

viewpoints are not covered?) Relevance to your research (how does the source relate to your topic?)

I am expecting specific answers to these questions, so instead of “The general public reads this journal.” I should see, “The intended audience is American medical doctors.”

MLA FormatMLA Format should be pretty easy since the sources will all be scholarly journals. Each citation will include author, article title, journal title, volume number, issue number, date, and pages. Here’s a sample with correct punctuation:

Barton, Ellen L. "Evidentials, Argumentation, and Epistemological Stance." College English

55.1 (2005): 745-69.

Please note that when citing a source that was found using a periodical index (such as Ebscohost, Lexis Nexis, or any other index on the ASU library site), you will list the source as a scholarly journal article rather than as a web site. Using a periodical index to find an article is like using a library to find a book. You would not cite the library you used to find the book, just as you would not cite the periodical index you used to find the article.

By now you have gathered and assessed the sources that will help you write a strong persuasive essay for Paper 2. If you find that you need to gather more sources, feel free to do so. You may have as many sources on your Works Cited for Paper 2 as you wish. Remember that 10 of them must be scholarly sources published after 2000.

Page 10: Policies - public.asu.edutrishm/worddocs/.../ENG102.doc · Web viewLast October I raced in the SOMA half Ironman triathlon. It was so much fun. This semester I will be training for

Paper 2 is an essay that studies at a program, policy or law to make a judgment about quality. The paper will have a clear claim in the introduction that states the main point of the essay. That means you must make an assertive statement about the quality of the program, policy or law you are examining. Please read the paper assignment very carefully. I would also suggest that you print a copy of it out so you cna refer to it while you draft your paper.

The paper must fully define the program, policy, or law, and it must also fully define the criteria you use to determine its level of success.

To help prepare you for the next paper you will compose a Writer’s Journal that asks for potential topics for Paper 3. Picking a strong topic is very important, so I want you to start thinking about it early in the process. You will also complete Activities to help you integrate source material into your essay, and to pick strong evidence for your arguments.

To supplement that work you are required to read Chapter 8 Structuring Arguments, Chapter 3 Readers and Contexts Count, Chapter 18 What Counts as Evidence, Chapter 16 Arguments in Electronic Environments. To prepare for next week I also want you to read the Assignment for Paper 3.

Your grade for Paper 2 is worth 20% of your final grade. It is broken into three parts: Paper 2 First Draft Due Wednesday at midnight, Paper 2 Peer Reviews due Friday at midnight, Paper 2 Final Drafts due Sunday at midnight. Your First Draft and Peer Reviews are a very important part of the writing process. I do not have time to reply to First Drafts, so your student feedback will be critical to your grade.

Writer’s JournalRead the next paper assignment and make a list of 3 potential topics. Why are you interested in each topic? What makes each topic controversial? How much do you already know about each topic? Rate the topics in order from most unique to most common. Describe the ratings and why you chose them.

Week 4

AnnouncementsHi class, Is it really possible we only have 2 weeks left?  I am so proud of you and all of your hard work.  We have been moving forward at a scorching pace, and you are all doing such a wonderful job. Your "Week 4" folder is now available under the "Weekly Work" button.  You have a WJ and 2 activities due Wednesday at noon, a paper 3 first draft due Wednesday at midnight, a peer review due Friday at midnight, and a final paper 3 due Sunday at midnight.   I will be grading paper 2 today so check back this evening for my comments in your gradebook.   A note on system outages: when the server is down I can't access the course either, so it's not like I'm in there grading your work.  If the server goes down again, just be patient and try back the next day.  That's what I'll be doing =). Great work class! Trish

Lecture Notes Congratulations! You have now completed one Annotated Bibliography and one persuasive essay. We will now go through the process a second time to give you more practice at academic research and writing. Hopefully the first Bibliography and Essay left you with a good idea of how important it is to pick a strong topic. For the second sequence of papers, you will focus on a very specific problem that exists in your field of study.

Your Writer’s Journal this week asks you to think about the problem you have chosen in great depth. The two Activities will ask you to think about popular opinion on the problem you are examining, and logical fallacies used when arguing about the problem.

To supplement that work you are required to read Chapter 14 Figurative Language and Argument, Chapter 15 Visual Arguments, Chapter 19 Fallacies of Argument, Chapter 12 Proposals, Assignment for Paper 4.

Your grade for Paper 3 is worth 20% of your final grade. It is broken into three parts: Paper 3 First Draft Due Wednesday at midnight, Paper 3 Peer Reviews due Friday at midnight, Paper 3 Final Drafts due Sunday at midnight. Your First Draft and Peer Reviews are a very important part of the writing process. I do not have time to reply to First Drafts, so your student feedback will be critical to your grade.

Week 5

AnnouncementsHi class, Congratulations for making it through this session at a scorching speed. You have all done such great work and I am really proud of you.

I have just a few announcements for this week.

On Monday I made your Week 5 folder available under the "Weekly Work" button. You have a WJ and 2 activities due Wednesday at noon, a paper 3 first draft due Wednesday at midnight, a peer review due Friday at midnight, and a final paper 3 due Sunday at midnight.

After that—all the work is up to me! You will be able to access your course grades through myASU (just log on to the asu.edu page and choose ASU Interactive). Grades are due Tuesday July 5 th so I will have them ready by then. I have finished grading all of the paper 3’s (except for one that was submitted in WordPerfect). All I can say is, WooHoo! You did an amazing job, and the research and MLA and annotations were really strong. I am so impressed by every student’s ability to adapt to the rigorous demands of academic research. There was such a big difference between paper 1 and paper 3. That tells me that you really learned strong research skills, and strong assessment skills. I am proud of you! Please read my comments on your paper and email me if you have any questions.

And finally, it has come time for you to evaluate the course, so if you could take a few moments to fill out the evaluation at http://www.asu.edu/english/forms/evaluation.html I would really appreciate it. Those evaluations are used for re-hiring, raises, and annual assessments so they are very important to me. I would really appreciate any helpful words you might share. Our line number is 63288 and my full name is Patricia Murphy. Thanks in advance for taking the time to fill it out.  Good luck this last week! Please email me with any questions. Trish

Lecture Notes Great job! Now we only have one more paper to go—the last persuasive essay, this time in the form of a proposal. This paper will be your last chance to show off your persuasive writing techniques in the class. To that end, we will do some specific reading and work with different modes of argument: emotional, value-based, logical, and ethical.

Your Writer’s Journal this week asks you to profile a professor at ASU to gain a better understanding of expert opinion on the topic you have chosen. The two Activities will ask you to use rhetorical appeals, especially in your introduction and conclusion, to strengthen your argument.

Page 14: Policies - public.asu.edutrishm/worddocs/.../ENG102.doc · Web viewLast October I raced in the SOMA half Ironman triathlon. It was so much fun. This semester I will be training for

To supplement that work you are required to read Chapter 4 Arguments from the Heart, Chapter 5 Arguments Based on Values, Chapter 6 Arguments Based on Character, Chapter 7 Arguments Based on Facts and Reason.

Your grade for Paper 4 is worth 20% of your final grade. It is broken into three parts: Paper 4 First Draft Due Wednesday at midnight, Paper 4 Peer Reviews due Friday at midnight, Paper 4 Final Drafts due Sunday at midnight. Your First Draft and Peer Reviews are a very important part of the writing process. I do not have time to reply to First Drafts, so your student feedback will be critical to your grade.

Writer’s JournalFind a professor in your field at ASU and profile that professor. What is the professor's educational background? Where does the professor publish articles? At which conferences does the professor present papers? What are the professor’s opinions on the problem you are writing about?

AnnouncementsThanks for your work on the WJ6. I don’t have time to respond to every one of them, but I have complied an important list of points that will apply to all of your topics. Please read them carefully, and if you have individual questions about your post please email me.

Claim:

The assignment for paper 2 states, “Your paper will start with a claim that your subject is good/bad, effective/ineffective, best/worst, competent/incompetent, successful/unsuccessful, or any similar comparison of value.” That means that a successful paper will include evaluative language to make an argument of evaluation rather than making a proposal or an argument of cause and effect. Here are examples.

Proposal: “Religion should be taught in public schools as long as it is educational and not devotional.” That argues about what should happen rather than evaluating what has happened.

Cause and Effect: “Teaching religion in the school causes some students to feel alienated.” Since that is an argument of cause and effect rather than an argument of evaluation.

Evaluation: “Teaching religion in public schools is not an effective policy.”

If your claim contains the word “should” you can be pretty certain that your paper will fail to complete the assignment. “Should” indicates that you will propose something rather than evaluated something.

Make sure your arguments are distinct from your claim, but clearly support your claim. Make

Evidence:

Types of evidence include statistics, expert testimony, studies, case studies, etc. This must be gathered from outside sources.

Your Paper:

Your paper must clearly define the actual program, policy or law you are evaluating. This should happen in the beginning of the paper.

I hope you found additional indexes you can use, or at least found that you already liked the one you had. I enjoyed reading your responses and I appreciate your attention to that assignment. I was missing work from a few folks, so don’t forget that counts as an absence and it drops your Activity grade down a +/-. I updated the gradebook so you can see how you are doing.

Now on to peer review. I really want this process to go well. And to make the board cleaner, I would like you to CHANGE the subject line to your name. That way we can see where the threads are going. So erase what is there and type in your name. If you already submitted and did not write your name in the subject line, you can still change it by opening your message and choosing the “Modify” button. This should really help the board be easier to manage.

Another note on threads is that there are two “Views” to the threads. When you have a message open, the thread will be disturbed. When you don’t have a message open the thread will be intact. So when you are looking for the 3 posts under your name make sure you don’t have a message open. Play with this a few times and you will see the difference pretty quickly.

First drafts are due tonight at midnight. Peer Reviews are due Friday at midnight. And Final drafts are due Sunday at midnight. I will be grading these Monday morning.

Thanks again for your work. I am proud of you.

Trish

Just a reminder we will not be meeting in the classroom Thursday, and my office hours will be held online.

Some of you were confused about what it means to hold Thursday's class online. As you know, in this hybrid class your "Tuesday" class is held online, with Activities and WJs that count as attendance due at a certain time during the week. We don't actually log on together on Tuesday.

That's what I mean by "Thursday's class will be held online." Your peer reviews are due at a certain time Friday at midnight. You get credit for attendance if you do them, and you are counted absent if you don't. We don't need to log on together during our class time.

I hope that is more clear.

I will be on email today if you need me.

Peer Review First, post your First Draft of Paper 1 here by Wednesday at midnight. By Friday at midnight you are required to peer review the 3 papers below your post. If your post is on the bottom start again from the top. You will make your peer review comments with the reviewing features in Word. You MUST use the reviewing features in Word, not only because it is a good thing for you to learn, but also because it is the easiest, most uniform way for us to comment on each other's work. Make sure to have the assignment for the paper next to you and read it several times as you peer review. I follow the assignments to the letter. I don't grade you on anything that isn't in the assignment. The assignment states very clearly what your paper needs to include. Please help each other fulfill all the requirements in the assignment.

Announcements

Hi Class,

I have finished grading your Correspondence Packets. You will find your grade in the “Student Gradebook.” To read my comments on your paper please click on the grade (it’s a hotlink) and open the Word doc I attached for you.

I really enjoyed reading your packets. There were some very creative and interesting scenarios, and most of you did an excellent job creating strong pieces of writing, each with a specific sense of audience and purpose.

Out of 34 students there were:

16 A’s6 A-‘s1 B+6 B’s4 C’s

So as you can see you did an excellent job.

Please remember your WJ 4 is due tonight at midnight. As with the Correspondence Packet, the topic you choose can make or break your grade. Please do some careful thought and research before submitting your topic. Also please think about the next two major projects: the Report answers a research question, and our last project the Proposal proposes a solution. So make sure your topic matches the assignment.

As for next week’s work, you have an activity on Integrating Sources. I’m going to make that due Wednesday at midnight, since it works well for me to grade those on Thursday while I am on campus and my myASU is faster.

That activity asks you to practice using signal phrases to integrate source material. You will need to perfect that skill for your Report and Proposal.

Thanks for your hard work. I appreciate all of you very much.

Trish

AnnouncementsHi Class,

I hope you are not reading this right now, because I hope you are having a wonderful week off instead. However, for those of you reading this, I just have a few updates. I have responded to all of the WJ8’s that were posted (there were 7 posts missing—please email me your topic if you forgot to post). I have approved some topics, and I have asked for more information on others.

I am still working on your papers and I hope to have them posted some time next week.

Thanks for your work and have a great spring break.

AnnouncementsHi Class,

I have finished grading Paper 2. Here is the grade breakdown:

A 12A- 11B+ 4B 11B- 2C 6D 4E 4

As you can see, there were many very, very good papers. I am very proud of your hard work. I understand it is difficult to write strong academic writing, so I am very pleased with the results. If you received a grade you are unhappy with, please feel free to see me in office hours Thursday 11:30-1:30, or email me to request a phone conference. Th

Many of you noticed that although I graded WJ8 I did not update the Gradebook. I will be doing that Thursday afternoon. I was not on campus, and it is hard to do from home.

I hope you all had a great spring break. It will be hard to come back to work. For this week you have the following due Wednesday at midnight:

Read Chapter 14 Figurative Language and Argument Read Chapter 15 Visual Arguments WJ9: Assessing Sources

Thanks for all of your hard work. I really appreciate it.

Week 11

AnnouncementsHi Class,

I have graded WJ9 and updated the gradebook for all 9 Writer’s Journals, so you will see those changes on the board. Thanks for your work on those.

Please note that next week the following is due:

Read Appendix C Documentation Guide Read Chapter 10 Revising and Editing for Usability Paper 3 First Draft due by midnight Wednesday Mar 29 Peer Review due by midnight Sunday Apr 2 Paper 3 Final Draft due by midnight Sunday Apr 9 WJ10: MLA Format (due Wednesday Mar 29 at midnight)

Based on feedback about the assignment for paper 1, I have made two slight changes to the assignment for this annotated bibliography (paper 3).

First, I changed the length of each annotation from 100 to 125 words. Try to match this limit as closely as possible. If you have 145 words, find some way to cut 20 words out of your text. If you have 105 words, add another sentence. The goal is to give just enough information in a concise way.

Second, I removed one of the 6 required parts of the annotation. The five parts you must now cover are:

• Brief summary of the main purpose of the cited work (what is it about?) • Author's intellectual/academic credentials (what has the author contributed to the field?) • Work's intended audience (who reads the publication?) • Possible shortcomings or bias in the work (what is missing from the argument? what viewpoints are not covered?) • Relevance to your research (how does the source relate to your topic?) Please try to write about a 25 word sentence on each of these, since each part should be covered equally. Do not skip any of these 5 parts. Use Google or Ulrichsweb.com to gather information about the author and journal.

Part of my goal for this assignment is for you to become an expert on a content area or field. I want you to be one of the best writers in your upper division courses. One of the ways you can achieve that is to learn who are the important scholars and researchers publishing in your field, where they are publishing, and what they are publishing. The annotated bibliography helps you find the best sources from the most esteemed scholars.

I am excited about this research you are doing because it puts you leaps and bounds ahead of other students. I am really proud of all of you.

Thanks for your work,

Trish

Week 12

AnnouncementsHi Class,

Thanks for your WJ11’s. I enjoyed reading them, and I appreciate your reflection on our last project. I have updated the gradebook to reflect that work.

Please note your paper 3 is due Sunday April 9 at midnight.

Also due next week is:

Read Chapter 4 Arguments from the Heart Read Chapter 5 Arguments Based on Values WJ12: Find a professor in your field at ASU and profile that professor. What is the professor's educational background? Where does the professor publish articles? At which conferences does the professor present papers? What are the professor’s opinions on the problem you are writing about? How might you appeal to that professor’s emotions? How might you appeal to their values?

WJ12 is always a fun one. You can gather this information online, or if you can’t find it online you can call the department and ask for the information. Try to find some of the professors’ publications on your problem to determine their opinions.

Nice job everybody. It is hard to believe this is the end of week 12. You are doing great. Hang in there!

AnnouncementsHi Class,I have finished grading Paper 3 and I have updated those grades in the Gradebook. Thanks for your hard work on those annotated bibliographies. I had many perfect papers. Here is how the grades broke down:A 26A- 11B 6C+ 1C 2C- 1D 3E 4

Four people did not turn in papers. The C and D range papers failed to provide scholarly sources as the assignment required. I want you all to do very well in this class. If you received a grade you are unhappy with, please feel free to see me in office hours Thursday 11:30-1:30, or email me with your phone number and a good time to call and we will have a phone conference.

We have only 2 ½ weeks of classes left, so we are almost through, and I am very proud of the hard work you have done this semester. I believe you have all come a long way towards understanding the requirements of University level research and writing. I feel happy and confident that you will go into your upper division courses and be able to handle any writing assignment that comes your way. I am proud of all of you.

We have a little bit of work left. For this week you have the following due:

AnnouncementsHi Class,

I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving.

We are almost done with the semester, and I am so proud of all of your hard work. In honor of that hard work I am going to cancel the last activity, “Evidence” since I noticed I failed to put it on our Course Schedule anyway. So all you have left to do is the Proposal first draft, peer review, and final draft. As a reminder, here are the due dates for the proposal:

First Draft due Wednesday Nov 30 at midnight

Peer Review due Sunday Dec 4 at midnight

Final Draft due to "Paper Assignments" section Wednesday Dec 7 at midnight

I have had a few questions about the proposal so I would like to answer those here so everyone can benefit from the answers.

Every proposal must have a Qualifications section. For the Qualifications section I would suggest writing about any work experience or coursework you have had, or even research you have done on the topic that makes you knowledgeable. You can also write a generic description of an "IT" person or any other personnel who might assist you, based on assumed qualifications.

Every proposal must have a Works Cited even though the sample in the book does not. I use this to check your research.

If you have any further questions please feel free to contact me.

Trish
