The Poetry Packet A packet of poems created by you! We will be writing poems in class during the next two week. Use your best penmanship to write these poems and make this packet as neat as possible. You will be graded on your ability to write these poems and on the overall appearance of this packet when it is turned in. The following is a list of poems that we will be writing. Couplets, Triplets, Quatrain, and Cinquain:

Couplet: A couplet is a poem that is simply made up of 2 lines with end words that rhyme.Example: Mr. Tracy is cool

Triplet: A triplet is a poem made up of three lines that have end words that rhyme.Example: Often times I wonder why

I spend my time in junior highI love it here, I cannot lie.

Quatrain: 4 line poem formed by two rhyming couplets. Easy! This pattern is called a a b b. The first line rhymes with the second and the third line rhymes with the fourth line. Other quatrain patterns are: a b a b

  a b b a a b c b. 

Example: Winter Snowy, white, gray, cold

Chilly, frigid, freezing, brightThese words describe winter

When there's snow in winter, it feels so right.

Cinquain: 5 line syllabic verse form. It gradually increases number of syllables in each line until the last line, which returns to two syllables.

Line 1: 2 syllables    One word giving the title. (noun) Bats Line 2: 4 syllables   Two words that describe the title. (adjectives) Small,brown                    Line 3: 6 syllables   Three words that express action. (verbs) Gliding, landing, feeding          Line 4: 8 syllables    Four words that express feeling. Bugs, fruit, eating              

Line 5:  2 syllables    One synonym for the title.     Mammals          1

Acrostic and Alliteration:Acrostic Poem: A nominal poem is a poem in which you write the letters of a name down a page. You then need to think of words that describe that person that start with each letter from the name.

Example: CuddlyArtfulTeasing

Alliteration: The words in this poem all begin with the same letter and describe one thing. Example: Pretty Priscilla prances painfully in Paris.

Autobiography Poem:Line 1: Your first name Line 2: Four descriptive traits Line 3: Sibling of... Line 4: Lover of (people, ideas) Line 5: Who feels... Line 6: Who needs... Line 7: Who gives...Line 8: Who fears... Line 9: Who would like to see... Line 10: Resident of (your city) Line 11: Your last name

Diamonte and Concrete Poems:Diamonte: A diamonte poem is shaped like a diamond. It is has seven lines and follows the following pattern:Line 1: 1 Noun (subject)Line 2: 2 Adjectives (describing subject)Line 3: 3 Participles (verbs ending in ing or ed describing subject)Line 4: 4 Nouns (the first 2 relate to line one, the last 2 to line 7)Line 5: 3 Participles (telling about the opposite)Line 6: 2 AdjectivesLine 7: 1 Noun (the first and last nouns need to be opposites)

Concrete: A concrete poem or sometimes called a shape poem makes a picture of what the poem is describing.

Parts of Speech:Line 1: one article and 1 nounLine 2: adjective, conjunction, another adjective.Line 3: 1 one verb, one conjunction and one verbLine 4: 1 adverbLine 5: 1 noun or pronoun that relates to line one

Haiku and Limerick Poems Haiku: Haiku is a form of poetry that originated in Japan and is madeup of three lines. . Haiku poems usually depict a scene in nature and often include afeeling about that scene. A good haiku poem says a lot in a very small amount of space.

The first and the third lines have five syllables each; The second line has seven syllablesIf you draw a picture of a scene in nature, then you can use this scene to inspire your haiku poems.Example:

A weightless balloonSlips from the hand of a child-

The wandering moon.

Limerick: A limerick is a silly poem with five lines; they are often funny or nonsensical. Lines 1, 2 and 5 rhyme. Or the pattern is AABBA  Lines 3 and 4 rhyme

Example: There once was a jumping monkeyAnd jumping he would always beHe fell off a cliffBecause he was stiffNow jumping he will never be

Free Verse:An easy definition of free verse would be prose written rich in imagery and broken up with line breaks instead of punctuation and paragraphing.

Example:

Washed Away

Nothing's changed except me and the factsAnd the sadness I didn't mean to start.But it feels different now you've saidIt's wrong, and I still can't see your point.And I think as water runs over my hands thatThat's really all there is or can be.The gold is wearing off the infamous ring And something wears away from around my heart.

Here are the requirements: **Due Date: Friday, May 14th**

- Two (2) of each type of poem (26 total) see check list on page 1. Each type of

poem should have its own page but you can put two of the same poems on 1 page.

- Each page should have an illustration that relates to one or both poems.

- Cover page which includes: Name, number, grade/section, creative title, and

illustration

- Table of Contents (include page numbers)
