Podcasting 101 What is Podcasting?
Podcasting means making digital audio and video files available on the internet in such a way that others can see their computers to automatically download new episodes in a series as you post them.
Came from the two words: pod and broadcast
Podcasting 101
What makes podcasting different than other audio or video files? You can subscribe to what is known as a
“feed” using application that supports RSS, such as Apple’s iTunes
Do I need an iPod to listen or subscribe to a podcast? No. Podcasts can be listened to from your
computer or MP3 player.
Podcasting 101
What is RSS? RSS stands for “Really Simple
Syndication” or “Really Simple Subscription”
You subscribe once, then new issues arrive on a set interval without you having to request them.
The RSS program automatically downloads those files for you.
Your subscription never expires—but you can unsubscribe.
Podcasting 101
What is contained in a RSS files? RSS files contain special tags (similar to
HTML tags in web pages) that hold information about each individual episode such as:
TitleBrief summaryLink to internet address where these
audio or video files can be found
Podcasting 101 Are there other uses for RSS files?
RSS has been used for a while to deliver news headlines by sites such as CNN.
RSS feeds have also been used by blog authors to let their readers know when the blog has been updated
Educational Use of Podcasts
Improve Writing, Speaking, Technical, Planning, Interpersonal, Marketing, and Integrated Activity Skills
Podcasting 101 What are some different topics used for career and
technical education podcasting?
Software tutorials Teacher lectures/lessons Student created audio reports Audio and video exchange projects Vocabulary builder Make audio walking tours of your city or a favorite
museum. Record a restaurant review while you're actually
dining. Give dating tips. Multi-cultural awareness
Podcasting 101 Where do I find a listing of podcasts?
Podcast Alley iTunes Music Store (accessible with iTunes only) Google Yahoo Podomatic.com
Subscribe to podcasts on iTunes and you can transfer your downloaded podcast episodes to an iPod for listening to later.
Podcasting 101 Is iTunes the only place to find podcasts?
No. The more popular podcasters will list their podcasts in as many directories as possible
Yahoo lists them in their directory At Yahoo, you can listen to the podcast on the
Yahoo site and video podcasts are also supported
Free Podcast Hosting www.podomatic.com
Free hosting of audio and video podcast Can have multiple accounts Link to the site from your school site Keeps large audio and video files from taking up space on
school/district servers Check to see if it is blocked by your school district
Free Podcast Hosting
www.mypodcast.com Free hostingContains advertisementsHas proprietory recording software
Podcast Host Odeo is another option where you can produce an audio
podcast on their website using a flash-based interface. You can also record a podcast using your cell phone with Odeo
Podcasts recorded with Odeo are saved directly to the Odeo servers.
Podcasting 101
Three types of podcasts:1. Audio only2. Enhanced (with photos and chapter
markers)3. Video
Podcasting 101
Audio Podcast: Most podcasts on iTunes are audio only Audio podcasts require less power from a
computer than video editing does You will need a desktop microphone or a
headset with a built in microphone Microphones cost between $10-$50
Podcasting 101
Programs needed for recording audio podasting-Windows Audacity—free program—is supported by
both Mac and Windows, and even Unix-based Linux)
Need LAME encoder to export audio files as compressed MP3 files (very small in size)
Podcasting 101
Adding music to a audio podcast: Used to create transitions between segments Must use music you hold the copyright to or
download copyright free music Freeplaymusic.com is one source of free
music—must get permission to use in podcasts
Podsafe Music Network good site for music from independent bands—music for purchase
FTC Publishing —music and sound byte CD’s--$24.95 for 3400 royalty free sound and music MP3 files
Podcasting 101
Enhanced Podcast: Includes still photos Includes chapter markers used by the
view to skip around to different segments Each chapter marker can include a title as well
as a hyperlink used to visit a website mentioned on that segment
Podcasting 101 Video Podcasts:
Requires video cameras and firewire to connect your camera to your computer
Video files are large even after compression
Video podcasts take longer to edit than audio podcasts
May require an external hard drive to save videos on
Podcasting 101 Programs for video podcasting: PC/Window:
Windows Movie Maker 2.1—free with Windows XP or can be downloaded from the Microsoft site.
Pinnacle’s Studio DV--$100 Adobe Premiere and Adobe Premiere Elements
(easier to use than Premiere and designed for home use)
Mac: iMovie—part of the iLife suite—installed on all
new Macs Quicktime Pro7—record and edit video Apple’s Final Cut Pro—step up from iMovie and
QuickTime Pro—steep learning curve Final Cut Express—entry level program
Podcasting 101
PhotoStory can be used with Windows to create chapter markers
This website is a resource for including chapter markers using Windows Media Encoder.
Enhanced podcasts created on the Mac can only be saved as AAC files. The MP3 format does not currently support enhanced podcasts

SourceForge provides access to a program called Lame Encoder for this
Lame Encoder
Link to Lame
Encoder download
Downloading Lame Encoder
After clicking on the link to the Lame Encoder download, follow the directions for downloading the program
Most people download the program into the Audacity program folder to make it easier to find
You will need to locate one of the files in this program the first time you export an Audacity file as a MP3 file
Downloading Lame Encoder
Links to the zipped program files for Windows, Mac, and Linux are on the same web page.
Choose the version you need
Unzipping Lame Encoder Files You will need a decompression program such as WinZip to unzipped

to cut or delete them The selected portion will appear darker
Recording Tips
If you mess up, use the Pause button to start and stop during the recording
When more than one person is recording, use the Pause button to switch the microphone to the other person rather than the Stop button
Always play the recording back before exporting it to ensure it is how you want it
Saving the Audacity File
Save the recording as an Audacity file before exporting it. This allows you to edit it within Audacity if needed.
Saving the Audacity File
A new folder is created for each Audacity project
Audacity files use the extension .aud
Exporting Audacity Files Audacity files are most often exported as MP3 or
WAV files You will need to know where you saved the Lame
Encoder program file the first time you export a file Multi tracks will be mixed down to one mono
channel when exported
MP3 Files
MP3 files will have a .mp3 extension on them, and can have either the same or different name than the Audacity file name.
Locating the Lame Encoder File The first time you export an Audacity file as a MP3
file, the program will need to locate the Lame Encoder file
You may need to navigate to the location where you saved the files and change the file type to “All Files” to find the necessary files
Lame_enc.dll file needed first time files are exported
as MP3
Other Uses for Audacity
Mixing narration and background music to MovieMaker videos
