Harold Martin trophy for the best swimming program in the Florida District of Kiwanis. The club partners with the City of Winter Haven’s Parks, Recreation and Culture Department to provide this important public service. In the Every Child a Swimmer program, swimming lessons are provided to children ages 5 through 10 years of age at no cost to their families. The Kiwanis Club of Winter Haven has offered the program for 12 consecutive years and has been awarded the G. Harold Martin trophy for excellence in four of those years. The “Every Child a Swimmer” program is recognized by the International Swimming Hall of Fame and is embraced by the Kiwanis International organization. In 2015, 50 children were certified upon completing the nine-session program. The Club recently completed its Spring 2016 swim program. Children who have completed the program over the years have reported they applied their new swimming skills right away. Statistics show that nine out of ten drownings occur within six-feet of safety, many in swimming pools and backyard ponds and lakes which are abundant in Florida. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that from 2015-2014 an average of 3868 fatal unintentional drownings occurred annually in the U.S. and that about one in five people who die of drowning each year are children 14 and younger. The CDC also reports that non-fatal drowning can cause severe brain damage resulting in long term mental and physical disabilities. The Every Child a Swimmer program saves lives! As a result of our generous benefactors in the community, we have a small number of Eaglebot and Technobot need-based scholarships available for students. We strongly encourage those interested in the program who may have financial limitations to complete the following process for financial assistance.

The Waiver Request Form and Instructions are located to your right. Please open a copy and review the document to determine if your child/children would qualify for scholarship relief.

In order to qualify for a partial fee waiver, you must provide items 1 and 2 below:

1. Complete the Waiver Request Form which is available as a link on this page (to your right). Please list all members in the household using the space provided on the waiver request form, including parents/guardians and all other children and/or adults.

2. Demonstrate financial need and submit proof of Current Year Income Tax Return – i.e. a copy of page 1 and 2 of your 2015 federal income tax return is required.

3. Submit proof of good academic standing (3.0 or higher GPA requirement) – i.e. a copy of your child’s last report card is appreciated. Note, if you do not have the last report card, Polk State College will verify the child’s academic standing through the school district office.

Important Note: the $35 non-refundable deposit is required of all registrants and it is highly recommended that you go ahead and complete the online registration process to ensure your child has a reserved seat.

Guidelines for Awarding TALON Robotics Partial Fee Waivers

Selection: The Review Committee will process the initial screening of applicants based on the stated qualifying criteria. Final approval and selection of each recipient will be made by the TALON Scholarship Committee. Recipients must use the partial fee waiver in the current session, or it will automatically be voided.

TALON Robotics

Partial Fee Waiver Guidelines

Through the generous contributions of Polk State TALON donors, some scholarship relief will be available for those with significant need.

This year, all participants will be required to pay a registration fee of $35.00.

Partial fee waivers will be awarded on a sliding scale based on household income and number of persons in the family. To assist us in determining eligibility, we will use the established Federal Income Eligibility Guidelines.

Anyone wishing to apply for a partial fee waiver will be required to provide proof of household income at the time of application.

In order to qualify for a partial fee waiver, you must meet all of the requirements below*:

Democratic Women’s Month Celebration Brunch Saturday, May 14, 2016, 11:00am  – 1:00pm 

 The DWC East Polk Ridge will be hosting a brunch on Saturday, May 14th, celebrating Democratic Women’s Month in Florida.  Our guest speaker will be Ghazala Salam.  Ghazala speaks out on human rights, freedom and opportunity for women and girls in every sphere of life. In 2015, Ghazala was recognized as a meritorious woman for her dedication to improving the lives of Florida women and serving as a positive role model for women and girls with the FCSW

The good news is that there are simple things you can do to get those steps in!
