WELCOME ADDRESS

Professor Michael Hann (University of Leeds, UK)

Cigdem Cini (Marmara University, Turkey)

Joint Presidents of Ars Textrina

It is our delight and pleasure to welcome all participants to the fourth International

Textiles and Costume Congress (ITCC), hosted for the second time at the Institute of

Technology Bandung (ITB), one of Indonesia's highest-ranking, education establishments.

The International Textiles and Costume Congress (iTCC) was founded through the combined

efforts of staff at the University of Leeds (UK), ITB Indonesia), members of the Costume

Culture Association (CCA) of Korea, and institutions in Turkey (Marmara University,

Istanbul) and Thailand (Kasetsart University, Bangkok). Since its founding, the ITCC has

been closely associated with the organisation known as Ars Textrina.

Ars Textrina itself'has origins going back over thirty years with the founding of a

journal by the same name, at the University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, Canada, by Professor

Ralph Stantin, also the founder of the Charles Babbage Research Centre (in Winnipeg,

Canada). The first volume of the journal Ars Textrina appeared in 1983, following a

conference concerned with advanced woven structures (held in Mineral Point, Wisconsin,

USA) in July 1983. The associated conference continued to be held on an annual basis, at

university locations in North America until 1995, when the conference was hosted by the

University of Leeds (UK). Subsequently, two issues of the journal Ars Textrino were

published at the University of Leeds, and the organization of the conference was transferred

there also. Ars Textrinn is now considered a UK organization, though membership is drawn

international.

The International Textiles and Costume Congress (ITCC) fosters and develops

knowledge relating to the textiles and costumes of the world. The Congress meets on a bi-

annual basis and the emphasis is on encouraging participation worldwide. Again, lt is a

pleasure to welcome all participants to this Congress, hosted by the prestigious ITB

(Indonesia). Also, we are pleased to extend out thanks and appreciation to the organising

committee and to senior staff of the host institution (ITB) for providing the facilities for the

duration of the conference.

WELCOME ADDRESS

Dr. Yan Yan Sunarya, M.Sn.

Head of Craft Program StudyInstitut Teknologi Bandung

Welcome to Aula Timur, Institut Teknologi Bandung!

First of all, I am very honored to host this event and would like to convey mygratitude towards the distinguished keynote speakers, presenters, invitees from various

universities and higher education institutions, participant, committee, to ITB and Ars

Tettrina UK, to the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Design at Institut Teknologi Bandung

ald the staff, to our Craft Program Study staff, to Bekraf as our main supporter,

We are hosting 2017 International Textile and Costume Congress simultaneouslysrith the 70th anniversary of the Faculty of Arts and Design ITB. It takes me back to when

ITCC was first established along with Prof. Michael A. Hann as the president of Ars Textrina,Prof. Biranul Anas who was the Vice Dean of Resources Affairs, and Dr. Ratna Panggabean

r-ho was the Head of Craft Program Study at the time. I myself was still a junior lecturerq-hen Prof. Michael A. Hann first visited ITB. It is now the second time ITB is hosting ITCC.The baton of leadership has been passed on from Prof. Biranul Anas to Dr. Kahfiati Kahdar, who once was a brilliant student of mine.

The theme of the congress this time tackles the milestones in craft and textiles. Inthe past decade, we have witnessed a post-creativity development of textiles and costume

:pearheaded by the post-millenial generation in the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

Textiles and costumes are no longer mono-discipline, inter-discipline, or even multi-discipline subjects. Textiles and costumes have now entered a trans-discipline era, in whichrrsual culture creates a discourse and develops into designs that have true purposes in thehuman daily life.

To encourage this discourse, I would like to wish you all a merry congress, enjoy theexhibition, and soak in the beauty that is Bandung!

"Every Day with Sumba" is thetitle of collection produced throughresearch process in order to create fashionproducts by utilizing Sumba woven as themain material and the daily life of Sumbapeople as inspiration. The existence ofSumba woven for the ]ocal and outsidecommunities has undergone some

changes withln this century. Based on

earlier research, those were caused by twomain factors which were the tourism andIocal regulation. Originally Sumba wovenwas produced in a very manual process,

although some areas have shifted in morepractical ways but they are still moreconventional when compared with otherregions in Indonesia. This manual process

makes Sumba woven's price high, but themarketability is not likely because thecompetition of woven from other regionsthat are currently traded in Sumba itself.Related to this situation, the role ofvarious parties in order to increase thelocal potential is required. One ofthem isthe role of designers to continueinnovating through their products.

In this study, the researcher as adesigner tried to approach the localweaver to make various woven size. The

variation of sizing was expected to avoiddesigners from cutting the big size ofwoven because of its pattern composition.By producing smaller variety of sizes, thewoven can be sold easier so that the localweaver economy would be more stable, therefore improved. The manual weavingprocess so far had not been widely knownby the Indonesian community, especiallyby those who are the market of thiscollection. Due to that fact, researcherintended to pour it into a series ofillustrations with embroidery techniquescombined with Sumba woven into a

fashion collection.

Various methods were conductedto obtain comprehensive understandingincluding expert interviews, libraryresearch, current trend, market, fieldstudy, and local weaver approach. Thesemethods resulted in a collection titled"Every Day with Sumba" which wasexpected to fulfill the market needs ofready-to-wear fashion products withoutlosing the impression of locality as a

potential in Indonesia.
