Introducing the PMD sensor from ifm efecA new price-to-performance benchm

efector pmd sensor for distance measurement

Collision avoidance “Shelf occupied” detection

Background  suppression and ultrasonic sensorsare lower-cost alternatives

for distance

measurement but have shorter ranges. Traditional time-of-flight

systems offer animproved level of performancebut are much

higher in cost.The efector  pmd

sensor combinesthe advantages of these systems: a 10meter range at anaffordable price.

Developed for a broadrange of applications

The efector pmd sensor can pran analog signal (4...20 mA) thproportional to the object-to-sdistance. The analog output cascaled to fit a variety of applicincluding automated storage aretrieval systems.

 Absolute distance

measurement

The efector pmd sensor can operateas a background suppression sensorat distances up to 10 m. Using a laserlight source with a spot size of only6 mm, the sensor accurately detectssmall objects – such as a nut on a cardoor panel.

Long range background  suppression

To monitor the position of an objectin a continuous process, the sensorcan be programmed to provide twoseparate outputs that will activate atpreset distances. Typical applicationis web tension monitoring.

Dual switch points for application flexibility

The efector pmd laser sensorfrom ifm efector is designedto measure distance based onthe "time-of-flight" principle. Each transmitted photon requiresa certain period of time totravel to the target and back

to the sensor. This time periods directly proportional to the

distance traveled.

Traditional time-of-flight sensorsuse a photodiode for a receiverelement with additional externalelectronics for signal acquisitionand processing. This type ofsensor design can be expensive, arge in size, and not ideal forndustrial applications.

n comparison, the efector pmd sensor’s receiver element is aSystem-on-Chip design. Thecomplete sensor element andelectronics are integrated ona silicon chip called a PhotonicMixer Device (PMD).

This innovative design by ifmoffers the right balance ofperformance, size, and price forndustrial distance measurement

applications.
