Haubstadt K-8 School was designedsimultaneously with its sister-school atOwensville. Each school required its owncurriculum programming.

Serving as the school district prototypes intechnology, these schools are the first inSouth Gibson to be fiber-optically wiredthroughout for computer networking.Audio-visual capabilities were provided tothe entire school via a media centerlocated near the central office.

A design innovation by architect TimHenning involved encasing a storageroom large enough for twenty-fvvestudents in reinforced concrete off of eachclassroom. This area doubles as a safe areaduring tornadoes or earthquakes andtriples as a mezzanine for mechanicalequipment.

Another key design element is the centrallocation of the stage between the cafeteriaand the gymnasium. A curtain can beopened from either side to entertainaudiences of varying sizes. The areabelow the stage serves as a storage area forcafeteria seating.

Location: Haubstadt, Indiana

Size: 54,000 square feet

Saints Peter and Paul Parish had not had arenovation since 1960. This presented twoopportunities: a major expansion to anexisting school, and the opportunity tomaster plan the future construction forPhase II and Phase III.

Architecture Plus chose to use an innovativeICF building system to add a multi-purposefacility and classrooms to the existingschool. This is the first school, public orprivate, to use ICF construction in Indiana.

Exterior walls can withstand a 250 mile perhour wind making the entire building a"safe zone". Exterior walls have an R-Valueof over 50.

Special variable refrigerant flow HVACsystems eliminate a significant amount ofduct work while supplying zoned heatingand air conditioning. Although 28,000square feet of space was added, utility billsonly increased from $5,000 per month inJanuary and February of 2009 to $5,300 permonth in January and February of 2010.
