EPCC NEWS The Joint Commission Accredited
Medicaid Certified “Helping Kids SOAR”
Evansville Psychiatric Children’s Center Volume 18, Issue 6 November 2018
On September 24th, EPCC held its first Spelling Bee! All EPCC children participated. The goal of this program was to increase the children’s ability to spell the words associated with our SOAR program. We chose SOAR program words because the children actively document points earned and deducted during their day and the reasons why they earn or lose points. They are responsible for knowing what their target skills are, and often need to document these on their point cards. Kids are even given opportunities to “take minutes” during daily Community Meetings! Knowing how to correctly recognize, spell, and write these words helps to increase the child’s success with the SOAR program.
The children received a list of 20 words to study prior to the spelling bee. The top three spellers received first, second, and third place prizes; however, no child left empty handed. Prizes and certificates of participation were given to all the kids.
The final winning word was “secretary”. This word actually served as a tie-breaker between the two best spellers!
All the children studied diligently on their spelling lists and it shows: the children have greatly improved their documentation of SOAR program essentials!
One thing children love about Fall is Halloween trick-or-treating. We make sure our kids at EPCC get to enjoy Halloween traditions every year. Our kids dress up in costumes, and staff help the children choose the perfect one, whether it be a superhero suit, a witch’s dress and hat, or using their imaginations and creating a one of a kind character!
Every year, the children trick-or-treat in the Administration Building by knocking on the doors of each office, proudly exclaiming “Trick Or Treat!”, and getting their bags filled with fun prizes.
Another EPCC tradition is the annual Halloween Carnival. Our Recreational Therapists and other staff decorate the gym and prepare game stations throughout the gym where kids can have fun with activities such as Dandy Donut Delight, Mummy Ring Toss, Pin the Nose on the Pumpkin, and Halloween Hopscotch. They win additional prizes, get their pictures taken in their costumes, vote for best staff costume, and
even receive some spooky sensory input with a feel-and-guess game (which included baby carrots for Frankenstein’s toes, spaghetti for zombie brains, string cheese sticks as “Witch’s Fingers”, gelatin for “Mummy Guts”, and dry beans for Swamp Thing’s Teeth.) Halloween is
certainly an event at EPCC!
Trick Or Treat!
Red Ribbon Week During the week of October 22nd, EPCC cele-brated Red Ribbon Week. This year’s theme was “Life Is Your Journey—Travel Drug Free”.
Red Ribbon Week kicked off on Monday the 22nd. All kids and staff were encouraged to wear a red article of clothing. Fun clothing days certainly continued throughout the week, includ-ing a tie-dye/bright colors day, mis-matched sock day, and Be A Smartie Day.
The children also participated in the annual Say NO To Drugs poster contest. The awards given for this year’s creations included Most Artistic, Best Slogan, Most Colorful, and Most Detailed. From looking at the posters, one could certainly gather that the kids definitely received and re-membered the message of staying away from drugs and alcohol. This year’s posters were
some of the most enjoyable we have seen in a while.

Our kids and staff participated in a Food Drive in early November to benefit the Ronald McDonald House of Evansville. Staff brought in canned or boxed non-perishable food items and then organized a Scavenger Hunt for the children! Staff hid different types of foods throughout EPCC’s Administration Building and then provided clues based on the type of food and how it related to EPCC staff members, or its location in the building. After our junior “gumshoes” completed their mission, all food collected was delivered to the Ronald McDonald House located on East Washington Street next to St. Vincent’s Hospital Campus in Evansville. Many of our families from outside the southwestern portion of Indiana utilize the Ronald McDonald House when visiting their child at EPCC. Please visit www.rmhcohiovalley.org to find out how to donate to or volunteer with this wonderful organization.

The Christmas season is always a big deal around here! EPCC staff begin to prepare early in the Fall to celebrate the entire month of December and ensure the children get a visit from Jolly Old St. Nick.
Several volunteer groups come to EPCC every year to provide Christmas gifts, parties, snacks, and gift wrapping services to make sure our calen-dars are full of fun and festivities. One special vol-unteer group who pays us a visit every year is 911 Gives Hope. This organization, made up of Evans-ville police, sheriff, fire, and civic leaders collect toys in early December at Walmart on the east side of Evansville. This wonderful group of ladies and gentlemen never fail to make us a stop on their delivery route, and they always bring us an over-whelming bundle of treasures while sharing their smiles with us. Be sure to listen to any local Townsquare Media radio station beginning the weekend after Thanksgiving to learn more about how to donate toys for community children in need.
We have individual friends of EPCC who bless us every year as well with donations of gifts, money,

time, and talents. We have even made some new friends along the way in 2018 who want to make sure Christmas time is exceptionally magical for our kids this year. If you or your group would like to see that our kids have a very Merry Christmas, please call the Community Services Direc-tor at 812-477-6436 ext. 232, or email at [email protected].
EPCC serves children, both boys and girls, ages 5-13 from the entire State of Indiana. We usually treat 12-15 kids at a time, with 75% of our population being boys, and 25% being girls. Our children suffer from severe emotional disturbances, often caused by severe abuse and neglect, a chaotic home environment, or in-utero exposure to drugs and/or alcohol.
Make sure to look at Page 3 of this newslet-ter, the EPCC Christmas Wish List for 2018, for gift donation ideas. Happy Holidays!
