Delcam Programs Used for Turbo Milling Demonstrations 30 November 2012 Delcam’s PowerMILL software for five-axis machining is being used to program a novel machining method for the creation of "fir-tree” profiles in components for turbo machinery. The new process, which provides an alternative to broaching, will be demonstrated during a "Turbo Milling Process

Chain” event to be held by INIRAM Precision, a New England-based importer and distributor of five-axis milling machines, in Peabody, Massachusetts, on 5th and 6th December. The milling approach, which is based on the trochoidal machining strategies in PowerMILL, has been patented by Iruba, a German provider of engineered solutions. It allows complex "fir-tree” profiles to be produced on five-axis milling machines, rather than having to use specialist broaching equipment. For the Massachusetts event, the demonstrations will be carried out on a Hermle C60 five-axis machining centre, which will be used to machine a complex fan disk. The use of trochoidal strategies gives a number of benefits, in particular giving high material removal rates with lower, and more consistent, cutting forces. The more consistent cutting forces also ensure higher accuracy in the position and in the shape of the slots, with minimal thermal effects on the surface of the profiles. The process also reduces the number of specialist cutting tools that are required, and cuts the machining time by between 30 and 40 per cent. Dassault Systèmes’ 3DEXPERIENCE Platform Used on Visteon’s e-Bee Vehicle Concept Project 4 December 2012 Dassault Systèmes today announced that Visteon Corporation, a leading automotive global supplier, is applying the 3DEXPERIENCE platform’s 3DSwYm social application on the cloud to its recently unveiled e-Bee vehicle concept. The use of 3DSwYm’s social, cloud-based community environment helped Visteon quickly develop innovative new concepts for this demonstration vehicle in its product areas of climate, interior and electronics. Visteon achieved efficiency gains in the development process, while reducing early prototype costs. Visteon also applied the 3DSwYm application to co-create with strategic customers and key supplier/partners on the e-Bee project. “Transforming our current creation environment was one of the primary goals of the e-Bee project,” said Tim Yerdon, Global Director Innovation and Design, Visteon Corporation. “Visteon designers in multiple regions can now work as if they were all in the same room, speaking the same language of 3D. This enables them to visualize the design as it evolves, leading to more effective interactions and faster product development.” Visteon’s e-Bee co-creation project involved people from around the globe, connecting joint venture partners and internal Visteon departments not typically involved in the innovation process. In most product development solutions, few personnel beyond engineers can share and view data in real-time. With Dassault Systèmes’ 3DSwYm application, ideas are now socially shared and informed decisions are made, keeping everyone in the loop without numerous change reports or electronic files. The “experience and demonstrate” capabilities of a socially shared 3D environment helped make it possible for Visteon to show its first design in seconds instead of weeks. Additionally, Visteon was able to solicit real-time project feedback from customers, joint venture partners, and suppliers. 3DSwYm communities on the cloud can be created very quickly, as users don’t have to purchase and set up hardware or buy specialized applications to connect people, share their ideas and collaborate. Globally, Dassault Systèmes has more than 1000 3DSwYm communities on the cloud.

Leading the Instant Foundry Adaptive Through Bits (iFAB) effort, the manufacturing arm of the DARPA AVM portfolio, ARL-PSU is working to develop an automated, end-to-end solution that provides real-time manufacturing routing and cycle time data along with detailed production cost estimates. These tools are intended to evaluate submissions on a series of design challenges being released by DARPA related to a new generation of military ground vehicles. aPriori’s Product Cost Management software platform will enable ARL-PSU to determine the cost and manufacturability of a design by pulling geometric and feature information from any 3D CAD model. The software leverages intelligent cost models based on the manufacturing process, materials and the plant where a product or part will be produced. It is anticipated that this knowledge will help iFAB and DARPA understand product cost and cycle time implications earlier in the product lifecycle and target the optimal suppliers, manufacturing processes and materials for its new defense vehicles. “The concept of deploying an automated engine for costing and manufacturing analysis powered by aPriori can have tremendous benefit on cycle time optimization, product cost and innovation for any manufacturer,” said Stephanie Feraday, president and CEO of aPriori. “Given that more and more large manufacturers are relying on their supply chain to design and manufacture a substantial portion of their products, we expect to see this approach really take hold in the broader marketplace over the next few years. It requires the right technology platform and consulting expertise to implement and support this kind of automated, end-to-end process, and aPriori can deliver both to its customers.”

Vessix Vascular Prepared for Growth and Compliance with Empower PLM 27 November 2012 Vessix Vascular is a privately held, venture-backed company developing novel radiofrequency balloon catheter technology directed towards a variety of clinical applications including the treatment of medication resistant hypertension via percutaneous renal denervation, and peripheral in-stent restenosis. This new technology has the potential to help the one in three adults in the world who suffer from hypertension–a condition that is more common than cancer, diabetes and coronary artery disease combined. Their newest product, the V2 Renal Denervation System for hypertension, recently received CE Mark and promises to greatly simplify the renal denervation procedure. Challenge/Situation: Manual Product Development Processes Vessix Vascular offers a unique approach to treating uncontrolled hypertension that is faster, easier to use and less painful for patients than any renal denervation system currently available in the market. Comprised of a group of individuals with previous experience at successful medical device companies, one of their first priorities was to formalize their product development processes to prepare for their market introduction, successfully meet regulatory guidelines and implement best practices early on. As a small group, Vessix could ‘get by’ with their paper processes for managing engineering changes, product documentation, and Bill of Material (BOM) information but knew this process would not be effective as they grew-particularly where they needed to track engineering change history with full audit trails to meet regulatory requirements. “Even as a start-up, we faced multiple challenges using a paper-based system to manage product revisions,” stated Rinda Sama, Director of Operations and Quality for Vessix Vascular. “Documents would pile up on people’s desks, which meant that items were not reviewed right away, causing delays, and many times by the time it was reviewed, the product was already in the next revision.” Goal/Strategy: Implement Product Lifecycle Management Early On The team at Vessix had previous experience with Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) software as a tool to automate product design and development processes. They wanted to implement PLM early on as a best practice for managing BOMs, engineering changes, product documentation, training records, and Corrective and Preventive Actions (CAPAs). “Implementing a solution early on prevents the company

Page 28

from being bogged down by legacy data and processes when transitioning to an automated system in the future and also helps to eliminate resistance to change from employees entrenched in those practices,” stated Mr. Sama. “Tools like Omnify that are affordable, already configured to meet the needs of medical device manufacturers and can adapt to a company’s processes make it easy to adopt PLM as a start-up and get off on the right foot.” As they evaluated PLM vendors, they were looking for a solution that did not require huge backend support and that they could install on their existing servers. Omnify Software was recommended by a colleague at another medical device company using the Omnify Empower PLM system. “We looked at Agile due to previous experience with the software but found it to be very expensive and not quite what we needed as a start-up,” stated Mr. Sama. “After viewing a demo of Empower PLM we found the tool to be identical to Agile, and even better in some areas, but with a much more affordable price tag.” Vessix selected the Empower PLM solution because it met their needs as a small start-up with an easy to use and configure system and also delivered the features they needed for controlled product development processes to meet compliance requirements. The scalability of Empower PLM ensured Vessix that they would be able to continue to use the tool as the company grew. Customer Success: Time to Process ECOs is Transparent Empower PLM has supplied Vessix Vascular with a proven scalable solution as they have already grown from ten users to twenty-five. “Empower PLM is part of our day-to-day life at Vessix and the employees here love it,” commented Mr. Sama. Empower PLM addressed Vessix Vascular’s manual revision management issues by providing team members with the ability to see all Engineering Change Orders (ECOs) in real-time. ECOs no longer pile up on people’s desks. All of our product design and development processes are streamlined and viewable in a single snapshot and the time to process an ECO is transparent,” stated Mr. Sama. “We converted the Vessix Approved Supplier List from a static Excel spreadsheet to a dynamic Omnify list,” said Joseluis Espinosa, Project Manager and Omnify Administrator at Vessix Vascular. “In this way, vendors are now able to be linked with individual parts and assemblies. Opening a vendor record displays every part acquired from them. Another advantage to dynamic vendor management is the simplicity with which secondary vendors are able to be qualified and linked to pre-existing parts.” Omnify Empower Vendor Management provides an additional layer of information not available through the legacy paper system. Similarly, all tools and equipment are now managed through the Omnify Empower Training Management Module in order to track calibration and preventive maintenance. “Since we have test and manufacturing equipment both in-house and offsite at various contract manufacturers, using Omnify Empower PLM for automated equipment tracking and maintenance has substantially increased our overall efficiency,” added Mr. Espinosa. Vessix Vascular is ISO 13485:2003 compliant, which specifies requirements for a quality management

Page 29

system. The company has already been through two ISO 13485 Quality System audits using the Omnify Empower PLM system. Prior to Empower PLM, they would have to find and print documents to pull for an audit. Now, they can quickly search in Empower PLM to show the necessary documents along with change history, who approved the change, when it was released, change justifications, and links to any other Omnify items relevant to that part. The company recently received their CE Mark, which will allow Vessix to begin marketing the product throughout the European Union, making their Renal Denervation System available to the wider number of people suffering from drug-resistant hypertension. “Omnify PLM offers some subtle yet powerful advantages to the CE Marking application and review process,” stated Mr. Espinosa. “Design History Files and Phase completions were enhanced by citing project deliverables with dynamic links through the Omnify BOM structure, which increased the response speed when regulatory bodies inevitably requested more information. In addition, the web interface kept overseas employees in the loop with time-sensitive signoffs and item releases, and uploading legacy design documents en masse was a breeze, facilitating research into previous-generation projects to address regulatory concerns.”

CIMdata PLM Industry Summary

Page 31

Independent of the AutoCAD platform since Version 2012, Advance Steel improves its ergonomics and ease of use by providing a new user interface element, the "palette", which contains animated buttons and tooltips. New features, such as direct access to workshop drawings with a simple right-click in the model or the improved capabilities of working with joint groups, further enhance the simplicity of this new version. NEW PRODUCTIVITY TOOLS Advance Steel has many new innovations: first, the ability to create custom connections allowing users to define, store and reuse custom connections in their projects and thus easily adapt to all types of situations. For Olivier RASQUIER, Steel detailer at Ets J-C FASSLER (France) and Version 2013 beta user: "Until now, I was frequently creating my connections "manually" because my projects are all specific. With Advance Steel 2013, I can create my own custom connections and save them in my library. I can then easily reuse them in my new projects because they automatically adapt to new situations: changed profile orientation, different section etc. I can also clone them and create slightly different ones, as nothing is fixed anymore." Version 2013 also adds new connections for cold rolled profiles (anti-sag and tie rod systems, trimmer cleats, and eaves beam connections) for faster and more efficient drawing creation. Many other features are also available such as the option to create welding lines in drawings. This function is based on recognition technology of "notable points" that updates automatically when the model is changed which also applies to manual dimensions that are updated automatically by Advance Steel 2013. These innovations provide greater efficiency in terms of modeling and document creation for fabrication and assembly, and significantly increase user efficiency. Advance Steel "Professional" and "Premium" versions come with an Application Programming Interface (API) which allows users with computer programming skills to enhance and customize the software. NEW MARKETS Version 2013 has been adapted for the Australian, Indian, and Brazilian markets. Besides translation, the following software configurations are implemented: initialization of software settings according to local usage, enriched libraries (profiles, bolts, cladding, etc.), and drawing style configuration that meets local requirements. Advance Steel 2013 has also been enhanced with specific connections for the Australian market.

Delcam adds OrthoticSelector to Software Range for Custom Insoles 4 December 2012 Delcam has added a new program, OrthoticSelector, to its range of software for the design and manufacture of custom orthotic insoles. OrthoticSelector provides a lower-cost solution for practitioners and laboratories by allowing them to identify, from a library of existing designs, the prefabricated orthotic or cast that best fits a patient’s requirements. It also enables faster development of new designs when the patient needs fully-customised insoles. OrthoticSelector is Delcam’s first software that can also be used in the retail orthotic market, either for sports or medical applications, as well as by practitioners and laboratories. It provides a scientific method for the selection of the most appropriate orthotic design to match a patient’s foot anatomy and needs from a stock of existing devices. This approach is often more cost-effective than developing a customised orthotic since standard designs for frequently-found problems can be mass-produced. In addition, using standard designs means that patients can have their orthotics off-the-shelf rather than having to wait for them to be made to order. OrthoticSelector can also be used to select the most appropriate cast positive to match a patient’s pathology, again from a set of existing designs covering the most common pathologies. It is ideal for laboratories that have developed a physical database of casts covering the spectrum of foot conditions they need to treat most frequently. Vacuum-forming the orthotic from an existing cast again reduces costs and speeds up delivery to the patient. In both cases, the process starts with a scan of the patient’s foot, from which key anatomical features are extracted. These features are then used to select automatically the appropriate orthotic or cast design from the database. The software always lists the "ideal” fit for the patient, plus a range of suitable

CIMdata PLM Industry Summary

Page 40

alternatives on either side, giving the practitioner or laboratory complete clinical control over the selection process. OrthoticSelector is unique in that it can even accelerate the development process in many cases when a new design of custom orthotic insole is required. It can be used to select an existing design from the database which best fits the pathology of the patient. This design can then be scaled to match the size of the individual’s foot and the key anatomical features, before being passed for manufacturing. If required, the design can be added to the database to expand the laboratory’s offering to future patients. "The OrthoticSelector offers a way to provide relief for a patient more quickly and at a lower cost,” claimed Delcam’s Healthcare Business Development Manager, Chris Lawrie. "It will be of most benefit to those patients with relatively minor problems and those requiring additional support, for example, from sports orthotics. However, it will also mean that patients with more unusual or more extreme needs can have their custom orthotic insoles made more quickly.”

Delcam’s New ArtCAM Pro Makes Complex Artistic Designs Easy 6 December 2012 The new release of Delcam’s ArtCAM Pro CADCAM software for artistic applications has made it much easier to create complex designs, especially those that include repeated elements that are similar but not identical within the design. Unlike most other CADCAM systems, ArtCAM Pro is aimed at skilled artisans rather than engineers and requires little knowledge of engineering or computing. It has been particularly successful in the signmaking, woodworking and engraving industries. In these areas and in other artistic applications, ArtCAM Pro allows users to increase productivity, improve quality and deliver new designs more quickly, by combining their craft skills and creativity with the power and precision of computer-aided manufacturing. The main addition in the latest release of ArtCAM Pro is a new way of working called ‘Free Relief Modelling’. This technique allows previously-created reliefs to be selected and then moved, rotated, rescaled and copied, either individually or as part of a group. Any part of the design can be isolated, edited and then recombined into a group for duplication or further editing within the group. At any stage in the process, either individual items or a group of items can be saved within ArtCAM Pro’s clipart library for use in future projects. The overall result is much more natural than simply duplicating a single shape across the design, while also being much quicker than modelling each item individually. Examples where the technique could be used include creating the feathers in a model of a bird or designing a forest of similar trees without them all appearing identical.

CIMdata PLM Industry Summary

Page 41

A related development that will also make it easier to create more complex designs allows the interaction between different layers to be viewed in real time. This will make it much faster to choose the optimum combination of the different layers as the effects of changing the overlap can be seen instantly. Sketching in ArtCAM Pro has been made easier by giving the designer the freedom to alternate between straight and curved vectors whilst drawing. Once created, vectors can now be added to or closed, and any nodes within them can be edited or deleted, at any time, either in the 2D or 3D view. The ability to add textures to designs has always been an important feature within ArtCAM Pro. This ability has been extended with a new patent-pending ‘Texture Flow’ tool to create more natural organic textures, such as hair, fur and scales. More natural effects can also be obtained with an addition to the sculpting tools. Sculpting effects can now be scattered randomly across the design as well as placed systematically. More control is available over all the sculpting options as these can now be limited to a specific area or to a set height. Of course, the "undo” option is still available if the results aren’t as expected. All of these new capabilities can be displayed with even more realistic renders of designs created in ArtCAM Pro. The software now comes with POV-Ray ray-tracing technology, allowing high-quality images to be generated for customer approval or marketing materials.

DST Announces SimWise Version 8.5 4 December 2012 DST (Design Simulation Technologies, Inc.; www.design-simulation.com), has announced the availability of SimWise V8.5. This release introduces significant new capabilities for CAD integration and FEA solving along with a 64-bit version of the product. These enhancements will allow all engineers to test, refine and validate their designs without the high cost and complexity of traditional CAE systems. SimWise complements existing CAD and PLM infrastructure by working directly with product design data and adding simulation specific objects, resulting in a model that provides answers to fundamental engineering questions such as “Does it work?” “Is it optimized?” “Will it break?” Knowing the answer to these questions early in the design cycle allows necessary changes to be made at the most cost effective time without going through expensive and time consuming steps of building a physical prototype, testing it, and redesigning it.

CIMdata PLM Industry Summary

Page 42

SimWise enables small and large manufacturers to reduce their development time and costs by eliminating physical prototypes until a concept is proven in SimWise. The results are better products and higher profits. SimWise makes it easy for companies whose products contain moving parts and assemblies in the automotive, aerospace, consumer products, and machinery fields to perform dynamic motion simulation and finite element analysis in a single product at a price that makes it possible to place a copy on every engineer’s desktop. “SimWise provides simulation capabilities previously available only in high cost products de-signed for use by engineering analysts” said Jeff Arrigotti, DST Director of Sales. “Simulation has its greatest impact when it is used as an integral part of the design cycle allowing more de-sign alternatives to be explored; resulting in better final designs. SimWise has the power and the cost effectiveness to make up-front simulation a reality for all product teams no matter the size.” New capabilities in SimWise V8.5 include:

• A 64-bit version that allows large models to be simulated and better utilizes the capabilities of today’s computer hardware.

• An associative interface with Solid Edge that translates Solid Edge parts, assemblies and assembly constraints to SimWise via Solid Edge add-in. Associative translations via an add-in is also available for SolidWorks and Autodesk Inventor.

• Expanded data translation capabilities. SimWise can read the following data formats; Catia V5, NX, Creo/Elements, SolidWorks, Inventor, ACIS, Parasolids, STEP, IGES, and STL.

• A new data translation API that allows anyone to transfer part and assembly constraint data to SimWise.

• Enhancements to the Finite Element Solver to support normal modes, buckling, and steady state thermal analyses. The solver makes much better use of multi-core processors resulting in a significant decrease in solution times.

Lantek and Kerf Work Together to Offer the Best Profile Cutting Solution 5 December 2012 Lantek Systems and Kerf Developments have been collaborating for over five years in the UK to offer sheet material manufacturers a one-stop, premium solution for CADCAM, oxy-fuel, plasma and waterjet cutting. Together the two companies have installed around 100 systems at all types of companies, including leading end users within the industry. Dan Taylor, Managing Director of Kerf Developments says, “Our most popular machines are high density plasma and oxy-fuel. We work with Lantek because of the support it offers and the capabilities of its Lantek Expert software. In particular it minimizes user input with automatic lead-in and lead-out moves. Its auto nesting is quick and easy to use and produces excellent material utilization results.” Kerf’s oxy fuel and plasma machines use the Burny 10 control system which is the market leader and, in addition, the plasma machines use the Kaliburn high density plasma cutting power supply. This uses the company’s proprietary technology which includes special ramping and piercing routines. These routines increase consumable life, produce a high quality cut and reduce operating costs. Furthermore, the machine can achieve 2 degree bevel on the profiled part edges for the lifetime of the Kaliburn consumables. Dan Taylor adds, “We have the ability to remotely interrogate a machine at the customer’s site to diagnose any fault or operating problem. Because Lantek’s engineers understand the machine control interface as well as their CADCAM software, we can, where necessary, allow them to remotely access the machine control as well. This ensures that with Lantek we can accurately pin down any issues on the customer’s site and deliver a solution which often avoids the need for a service visit.” Kerf keeps an extensive range of spare parts at its Rochdale headquarters. Remote diagnostics ensure that when a service visit is required, the correct spare part can be brought along at the first visit, getting the user up and running again as quickly as possible. Lantek Expert includes dedicated technology for the full range of Kerf’s machines including its waterjet profilers. These machines are ideal for cutting non-conductive materials, eliminate any thermal damage to the parts being cut and remove the need for secondary operations on the component. Dan Taylor says, “The technology in Lantek Expert addresses all the techniques required by the three different processes. For example, the software has a heat avoidance routine which cuts one area on the oxy-fuel machine,

CIMdata PLM Industry Summary

Page 49

then moves to the opposite corner to continue cutting while the first area cools.” Rob Powell, Managing Director of Lantek Systems says, “We have a very good relationship with Kerf Developments. They supply high quality machinery and together we offer a system which is optimized for efficient and profitable manufacture. Our engineers understand Kerf’s machines and technology, and Kerf’s engineers understand our software, giving customers a uniquely seamless and integrated solution.”

SENER launches new FORAN Release, V70R2.0 5 December 2012 Following a strong strategy for innovation, last 30th of November SENER launched its newest V70R2.0 FORAN release. With a good payload of new capabilities and innovative developments, FORAN continues as a provider of integrated CAD/CAM solutions for shipbuilding and offshore. Nowadays, when the design cycle has shorten and the globalization allows companies to provide design services virtually from anywhere, the key factors to guarantee staying competitive are the right management of information through the complete design process and the seamless transition from one design stage to the next. This is, taking the right decisions as early as possible and developing them gradually, from basic design to production, with no data loses or derived drawbacks. For this last FORAN release, we at SENER have strengthen the links between the basic and detail designs, and between the ship design and the running PLM solution. Another step towards a cost-effective, energy-efficient, green design as the market demands. Ship model in FORAN V70 FORAN remains as the only CAD/CAM system which has been fully in-house developed, completely ship oriented. In FORAN integration doesn’t come as an effort to communicate between different disciplines from different developers, but as the natural result of accessing the same information from different perspectives. This natural integration has been even improved for the new release by unifying input data windows, opening the electrical data to generic pipe and HVAC fittings, controlling the equipment position in the ship regarding the maturity of the already connected cables. The FORAN V70R2.0 also includes the complete management of the ship applicability, which means full control of sister ships (like modifications applied downstream but restricted upstream, integrity of

CIMdata PLM Industry Summary

Page 52

the shared standards…). The PLM links have been extended too, yet in the process to integrate completely to the degree demanded by the most stringent markets, such as the naval ships and the offshore. In relation to enhancements in all the design disciplines, the new FORAN V70R2.0 incorporates new capabilities to improve the designer´s routine. Starting from the Initial Design discipline, a new and revolutionary module FBASIC replaces all the former Naval Architecture applications, with a single and modern environment. This, in addition to the FORAN General Arrangement module (FGA), also subject to improvements, allows a fast and successful management of the initial design stage. Many changes in the Hull Structure discipline allow a quick generation of the 3D model of the structure. The most relevant are the new module FNEST for the management of the nestings, the new profile definition options and the new clash detection command to calculate interferences between structural parts. It is worth to mention the benefits of the FORAN link with FEM tools, being an important approach especially relevant when the 3D model is built at early design stages. Regarding the Machinery & Outfitting discipline, the most remarkable improvements are FSYSD, the new application for the complete management of system diagrams (symbols, P&I and electrical diagrams), enhancements in the clash detection algorithm, a new level of integration between the 2D diagram and the 3D model for pipelines (including even a graphic selector of pipes from the diagram), as well as the interactive solid routing of HVAC ducts and cable trays. For the Electrical Design discipline, beside the new FSYSD already mentioned, the most relevant development is a new set of commands for the complete calculation of electric loads on board. About the drawings generation in FDESIGN module, it is worth to mention the new option to perform a multiple selection of sections, as well as the filtering of structure drawings, among other useful developments. Some other general innovations are the new solution to extract material reports from any ship discipline, and the incorporation of stereoscopic visualization and tracking in FVIEWER, the Virtual Reality viewer. Minor, cosmetic change but with everyday impact is the new palette for FORAN 3D model: it was time to replace the very basic and strong colors with new, softer and more natural ones. Sometimes just small details make the difference. With a continued history of more than 45 years in the market, SENER keeps on developing the cutting-edge solution for the shipbuilding success.

Tribold and TM Forum Release Product Lifecycle Management Guidelines 4 December 2012

CIMdata PLM Industry Summary

Page 53

Tribold in collaboration with Telecom New Zealand and TM Forum have released a PLM Introductory Guide for the Digital Economy, which will prove critical for all companies seeking to capitalize on the explosion of new service revenue by reducing their time- and cost-to-market, whilst improving innovation and quality. This guide is a contribution from Tribold and Telecom New Zealand to TM Forum’s Frameworx suite of best practices and standards. It explores the rationale for PLM in the Digital Economy, the maturity of the frameworks available and how such organizations might go about deploying PLM fit for their purposes. Catherine Michel, CTO and founder of Tribold, observes that “with subscriber saturation in the communications sector at an all-time high, the emergence of multi-service providers from non-traditional sources, the convergence of user interfaces and increasing network abstraction, the pressure is on to execute a product strategy that delivers simplification and accuracy, personalization without customization, reliability and flexibility at a low cost. In this context, PLM is becoming an essential enabler of the Digital Economy.” The introductory guide outlines how PLM, if implemented correctly, can have significant operational, financial and customer experience benefits:

• Operating cost reduction. Decrease execution cost, increase human resource performance, decrease churn rate.

• Time management. Decrease time to market, decrease waiting time, decrease delay in delivery to the customer through improved collaboration and establishing a consistent, product development process across the business.

• Innovation. Organizations are looking for PLM to improve the business by enabling more innovation at the idea stage, producing better product designs, increased reuse, standards and consistency, clearer visibility and management of product data.

• Product and process quality improvement. Increases can be observed in product management process performance; customer value performance; value net performance; information agile product catalogues availability and accuracy; product launch quality; provisioning performance; service quality and reductions in technical defects.

“Product Lifecycle Management is rapidly becoming a key competency for service providers as they embrace digital services which demand dramatically shorter lifecycles and agile product data management,” said Nik Willetts, chief strategy officer, TM Forum. “This introductory guide, based on the collective expertise and experience of Tribold and Telecom New Zealand, provides a solid foundation for anybody embracing PLM, and for best practice in this area.” Follow this link to TM Forum’s Product Lifecycle Management Introductory Guide, Version 1.1

V8i (SELECTseries 3) Releases of Bentley’s SewerCAD, SewerGEMS, StormCAD, and CivilStorm Products Streamline Workflows 29 November 2012

CIMdata PLM Industry Summary

Page 54

Bentley Systems, Incorporated, announced that the forthcoming SewerCAD, SewerGEMS, StormCAD, and CivilStorm V8i (SELECTseries 3) releases will have a unified file format. As a result, users of each of these software products can now directly open models created in any one of the other three, eliminating the need to import one type of file into another. To support this streamlined workflow, the same hydraulic element types are now available in all four products. Together, these enhancements increase information mobility across the Bentley portfolio of sewer and stormwater products, reducing the risk of data loss and thus increasing not only users’ return on data but also the quality of some of their most complex projects. Numerous solvers have been proposed for the equations that describe wastewater collection system hydraulics because the calculations are so difficult to perform. They require users to solve equations for partly full and full pipes with pumps and various control structures, and conditions can change during the simulations. Until now, users were forced to rely on manual workarounds when importing a model that included a hydraulic element for which calculations were not supported in the destination application’s solver. Dr. Thomas Walski, Bentley senior product manager, explained, "The new unified file format and support for all hydraulic element types in the new releases of our sewer and stormwater products have made modeling teams’ workflows a great deal more efficient. This means that a model created in any one of these products can be seamlessly opened and edited in another. The huge time savings that result from this improved information mobility are especially valued by the large, distributed project teams using any or all of these software products. It also means that the inconvenience of data model differences that occurred during imports prior to our new unified file format have now been eliminated, saving time and user challenges resulting from model inconsistencies." For more details on the numerical engines supported by each product, and to learn when it’s best to use each solver, please download Dr. Walski’s technical briefing note "What Is the Right Way to Analyze Collection System Hydraulics." In addition to the new unified file format, the V8i (SELECTseries 3) releases of Bentley’s sewer and storm water software also include the following new features:

• The SewerCAD and StormCAD solvers are now included in SewerGEMS, making SewerGEMS a full superset of SewerCAD, StormCAD, and CivilStorm. This enables the automated design of sanitary and storm sewers in SewerGEMS.

• The StormCAD solver is now also included in CivilStorm, making CivilStorm a superset of StormCAD. This enables the automated design of storm sewers in CivilStorm.

• All four products can now publish i-models (containers for the open exchange of infrastructure information) in 2D or 3D.

• Low-impact development controls can now be analyzed in SewerGEMS, SewerCAD, and CivilStorm.

• Culvert inlet control calculations are also available in StormCAD and SewerCAD (in addition

to SewerGEMS, CivilStorm, and PondPack). • HEC-22 inlet capture efficiency calculations are automatically performed when using the

SWMM solver in SewerGEMS and CivilStorm. • Pond outlet structure calculations are now available in StormCAD and SewerCAD (in addition

to CivilStorm, PondPack, and SewerGEMS). • Support for catchment elements is now available in SewerCAD (in addition to

CivilStorm, StormCAD, PondPack, and SewerGEMS). • Support for v-shaped and parabolic gutters is now available in SewerGEMS, CivilStorm,

and StormCAD. • Support for pressure elements, including pumps, is now available in StormCAD (in addition

Vero Announce the Launch of Machining STRATEGIST V14.0 3 December 2012 Vero Software is pleased to announce the release of Machining STRATEGIST V14, a powerful multi-axis CAM solution that generates optimum High Speed CNC toolpaths for both the office and shop-floor environment. Machining STRATEGIST is a CAD independent solution and can work with data from all major 3D modelling systems. Within the latest release, support for VISI 20 has been added and the CAD interfaces have been aligned to Parasolid v25. Significant product enhancements include a new innovative Roughing algorithm that will greatly benefit both Machining STRATEGIST customers and OEM partners. The new roughing strategy massively reduces rapid moments by controlling the tool movement so that it remains on the part, following previous cut paths instead of rapid feeding to the new position. Additional toolpath optimisation features include the ability to automatically machine flat areas only instead of adding extra Z levels to clean up planar zones. The new roughing algorithm also permits to the use of a large step over (greater than 50%), where an innovative offset algorithm ensures total coverage of the machining area by adding smooth transition corner pips to clean up any remaining areas.

Other significant developments include:

• Improvements to linking core area clearance toolpaths. • Linking horizontal area passes from outside to in (core linking). • Use pre-drilled entry points for cavity regions of core roughing toolpaths. • Minimise retract moves on vertical walls. • More consistent lead arcs when linking.

Steve Youngs, MS Development Manager concludes "The ever increasing complexity of our customers work continues to drive forward the development of Machining STRATEGIST. Our ability to deliver solutions to their demanding requirements helps us all to win new business. Machining STRATEGIST v14 keeps us at the leading edge of CAM technology as we look forward."
