We helped protect 38,000 square miles of deep sea habitat and 27 underwater canyons in the Atlantic Ocean and a network of areas encompassing 16 percent of California’s coastal waters. We have played a key role in stopping overfishing and promoting the rebuilding of many of our nation’s once-depleted ocean fisheries. We’re now working to protect more ocean areas and to defend the fragile Arctic and the high seas as industrial activity increases and ocean acidification intensifies. Now is the time to ramp up our ocean conservation efforts. We must promote sustainable strategies that will safeguard the oceans for this and future generations. Funds raised from this event will benefit NRDC’s Oceans Initiative.
