Mindfulness & Wellbeing

Mindfulness means paying full attention to something. It means slowing down to really notice what you're doing. Being mindful is the opposite of rushing or multitasking. When you're mindful, you're taking your time. You're focusing in a relaxed, easy way. (https://kidshealth.org/en/kids/mindfulness.html)

During these uncertain times it's really important to consider how our children are dealing with it, especially the very small children who don't have the words to explain.

The following slide will show some basic emotions. Please ask your child to say or point to show how they are feeling. Talk to your child about their choice.

Well-Being Activity – Shark Fin

A few minutes daily mindfulness practice can see children reduce stress and anxiety, increase concentration and engagement, sleep better, improve social skills, and develop problem-solving and decision-making skills.

Shark Fin is a fantastic tool that you can use during any quick moment in your day. Place the side of your hand on your forehead, with your palm facing out to the side.

• Close your eyes.

• Slide your hand down your face, in front of your nose.

• Say “shhh” as you slide your hand down your face.

• If you are sitting down, you do the 5 Ss while you move your hand: Sit up straight, sit still, sit silently, soft breathing, shut eyes.

• If you are standing do the same but you are standing straight, still, silently, using soft breathing and shut eyes while you move your hand down you

• “Master of Mindfulness” (Grossman & Alvarez, 2016)

Skill of the WeekPracticing Fasteners

This week we will concentrate on learning how to fasten and unfasten buttons, zips, velcro and poppers.

You can help your child to do this as they get dressed or undressed, when putting on their coats and shoes or you could collect a variety of clothes and shoes and do it as a daily activity.
