AGM Meeting 2015 Tuesday 7th July.

The election of Officers for 2015/16 will take place at this meeting. Also a motion for the use of the pool and gym by residents’ house guests over the age of eighteen will be voted upon.

Also at the meeting there will be a discussion on the possibility of getting a number of resi-dents to form an action group to get a better deal for our electricity and solar panels.

Morning tea will be served after the meeting.

Presentation by the General Manager: Tuesday 21st July at 2pm. This will include

updated information on entering Aged Care and Home Care Services.

Library News: from: Joy Hart (Honorary Librarian)

I am very pleased to see the library being used so often. I attend every day to check for in-coming books and put them on the shelves. Many thanks for all the donations. They keep on coming and are always most well received. We have a small selection of Large Print books on the right hand shelf as you come into the library.

If any resident would like me to deliver books for them I am happy to do so. You may like to ring me with a favorite author and I can check if we have any of their books.

BBQ at the Village: On the 1st Sunday of each month at the Rotunda in Harbourside. Just $2.00 – bring your own nibbles and drinks.

A wonderful crowd of over 32 people were at the last gathering and we would like to thank Nancy and the Craft Group for the generous donation of tables and chairs. A note of thanks must go also to Maintenance who removed broken pavers and replaced with the concrete extension. A large awning is also now in place. Your BBQ Hosts: Peter and Kris Maunder.

A must attend for your health - in the Recreation Hall. This is extremely popular with

residents who are feeling the benefit of exercise in a controlled environment.

Craft Open Day:

Fifty residents attended the Craft Open Day including four gentlemen. A Devonshire tea was served and a great time was had by all.

Anyone clearing out their wardrobe, donations of good clothing can be made to the craftroom. Nancy McEwan President: Craft Volunteer Group

Future Musical Events: Please check out the ad in this newsletter and come along on the 2nd Sunday of July at 2pm. Have some fun and a great afternoon tea.

Thanks for reading over the last eight years. You are all wonderful!

Greetings from Bernie Thompson Park

Thanks to the Maintenance Staff who cut our grass on Tuesday the 26th May. This was very efficiently done in One Day. They also trimmed the grass adjoining the public

walkway past the caravan park. Much appreciated.

Request for lighting and Walkway

Following concerns raised by one of our residents, action has been taken to get Council to provide adequate lighting in Council owned Bernie Thompson Reserve on the walkway from our exit gate to Government Road. Our request was sent to Council on the 5th June with copies to Ausgrid and to Councilor Sally Dover and accompanied by a petition signed by about forty residents. Here’s hoping.

Soup Afternoon

This was quite a popular afternoon. Dell provided a hearty pea and ham soup. I did a leek and potato one and Mary and Neil did garlic bread. It was nice to enjoy some quiet time with everybody feeding their faces!

Get-To-Gether (4th June)

It was great to welcome Rae back from Queensland after catching up with family.

We discussed briefly the possibility of celebrating Christmas in July at a local, handy

Venue as opposed to traveling to the Blue Mountains and nearly freezing to death as Brian and I have done in the past. I have made initial enquires at the L’il Buddha Restaurant

located in the Peninsula Motel, Nelson Bay. They are happy to provide lunch specials from their Asian cuisine menu and the suggested date will be Thursday 23rd of July if anyone is interested in joining us - please phone me on 4934 9632.

Country and Blues Musical Festival

A couple of us went along to cheer for our local line dancers competing at West’s as part of the Festival. The expertise and enthusiasm of our locals was great. Lyn who competed and Betty was just having a good time was great to see.

If anybody would like to contribute to our page in the Village Voice let me know by the 16th of the month.

Love to see you Thursdays at 3pm at the Rotunda.

Carol Russell, Assistant Advocate BTP.

SALAMANDER HAVEN VILLAGE NEWS

Winter arrived right on time with some really cold overnight temperatures and cold winds. However we

have been rewarded with some lovely sunny days. With winter upon us we are all inclined to shut our

front doors and hunker down inside with our TV on or a good book, IPad or other indoor activitiy to keep

ourselves occupied. This is a time when some people do feel shut out and lonely.

Let’s remember that there are lots of activities on offer in the village, and they need YOUR support to

keep on going.. Just check the calendar of events on the board in the Rec. Hall. On Mondays why not

join in the fun of Zumba? It’s a fun activity held every Monday at 1pm and helps to keep the body fit and

active.

Wednesday offers a choice of activities..start the day with our 8am Aquarobics class—it will really make

you feel energised and ready for anything—and the pool is delightfully warm! If that is too much for

your constitution, come along at 10.30 for a friendly game of carpet bowls..Ted or one of the ladies will

give you helpful hints..more new participants are welcome. Art class is on in the Craft room on Wed

morning, and Maureen and the girls always welcome visitors. Many men enjoy the camaraderie of the

Men’s Shed who also meet up on Wednesday mornings. Check out the re-located pool table and hone up

your skills.

After shopping on Thursday morning you can join up for Happy Hour at 4pm with other residents for a

chat and byo drinks. Happy Hour is replaced by our Sausage Sizzle on the first Thursday of each month

at 5pm and a good crowd has been turning up to enjoy John’s well turned snags served with Des’s hand

cut onions.

Every second Friday the Three C’s group meet in the Craft room at 10am—you do not have to be inter-

ested in craft to join this friendly group, many of whom just go along for a chat and a cuppa. Friday’s at

4pm is when the big table tennis comp is on!

The monthly bus outing is another Friday event on the Fourth Friday of each month. There have been

some interesting outings, some of the most popular being Destiny Haven at Clarencetown and our visit to

Kooragang Coal Loader. This month’s destination is Cooranbong to visit the South Sees Museum and

adjoining historical Sunnyside House.

As well all these regular activities, our energetic Social Organiser, Yvonne Milligan has some interesting

events scheduled. We are all looking forward to the Xmas in July excursion to Buttai Barn. The recent

excursion by bus via the Newcastle beaches to Belmont 16 footers Club for Sunday lunch was well

supported and enjoyed by all, despite the

unfavourable day. Do not forget our Sunday afternoon movie each month! Or why not join the group

who play cards every Saturday afternoon, or you can always go and find a good book in our well stocked

library, thanks to the dedication of Jenny Halpin and Shirley Harvey. One of our regular participants in

nearly all of these activities has recently celebrated her 90th birthday—congratulations Mary

Walker..enjoy your jaunt to Central Australia on the Ghan We have quite a few remarkably fit 90+ year

olds in the village who are getting out and about and join in many activities, which is great to see.

Several people have expressed concern about the recently introduced changes to costs of entry to

Aged Care. If you are computer savvy you can try the My Aged Care Website but is complex and

confusing. To save you any headaches the best option is to make an appointment with a Financial

Services Officer at the local Centrelink office, who will give you advice based on your particular

circumstances.

Energy Australia has changed their method of refunds for solar generated electricity, which you will now

have to claim by phoning them when you receive your account and requesting that your refund be paid

directly into your bank account/or a cheque sent to your address. Jann Thomas

PIANOLA SING-A-LONG AFTERNOON

TEA AT HARBOURSIDE

On Sunday 12th July at 2pm all residents of the villages are invited to come along and use the latest technology to join in a musical

afternoon. Join your fellow residents and sing or listen and laugh and just have fun like we did when we were young.

The words will now be displayed on the big screen so there is no

excuse not to raise your voice in singing the old favourites.

Please bring along a small plate for afternoon tea.
