And there are the roots that you can’t see at all because they are below the surface…. But you know they are there…
Above and Below the Surface Questions:
This tree is also a symbol for things in life….
There is the part that everyone can see easily, the who, what, when and where of life. We call these Above the Surface Questions that get Above the Surface Information.
And there are the parts of life that are just hinted at, that you have to figure out based on what you know….the why, how and what if of life. The could, would and should of life…We call these Below the Surface Questions, that get Below the Surface Information.

Cornell Notes: Communism and Fascism
Review 1. Communism Definition:
a society where the government owns the economy and enforces equality through a dictatorship; opposite of capitalism
2. Related Words: Soviet Union, no free market, poverty, Workers are best, everyone is equal, oppressive government
3. How does it work: Government collects all wealth and redistributes it population. In reality, gov’t gives extra to friends. Jobs are assigned. Few choices. Few innovations. Propaganda makes everything seem important. Country more important than the individual. Few rights.
4. Current or former leaders:
Khrushchev, Stalin, Lenin, Castro, Kim Jong Il, Mao
5. What part of society does Comm. appeal to?
The workers (who are supposed to benefit if everyone shares and no one gets rich)
6. What part of society did not support Comm.?
The artists, the educated and the wealthy. They lose power and money (which is given to everyone equally) and they can’t try new ideas or have different thoughts because it might create inequality.

Review 1. Fascism Definition:
a totalitarian dictatorship, stressing nationalism and often racism
2. Related Words: Hitler, Mussolini, Franco, Nazis, racist, Germany in WWII
3. How does it work: Capitalist society, but minorities are oppressed, their wealth stolen and used by the gov’t. Propaganda used to make an Us Vs. Them society. Minorities blamed for everything bad. Gov’t controls all media to keep opposing ideas from being heard. One way to think. Country and power is MOST important. Individuals and rights are not important. Yay technology!
