Dear Parents and Students,

It is our highest priority at Monte Vista Middle School for students to master

grade level standards and academic achievement. We as a staff strive to work

closely with parents to help every student succeed!

This handbook highlights all the curriculum content standards we work towards

for middle school. These standards define what we expect every student to learn

at each grade level. They are to provide the blueprint for teachers, students and

parents to clearly understand what students are expected to be able to know, do

or describe at the end of each unit of study. Essentially, standards provide us

clear goals for learning outcomes and students are accountable for meeting

those expectations.

Schools and parents provide instruction, assistance and support where necessary

for students to reach their goals in every class. This handbook is not intended to

describe in detail the instructional strategies or specific particulars on how each

teacher leads their classroom, but it does describe major expectations in each

class offered at Monte Vista Middle School.

Curriculum design prepares each student to be successful in life and is the

responsibility of all Pleasant Valley Educators. However, it is only with the

participation of parents and members of the entire school community that we

will best prepare students for high school and beyond. We welcome your

involvement, support and feedback.

Sincerely,

Joe Herzog,

Principal

Science 6 Year Course In 6th grade we will address earth science. Our focus will be on the forces that shape and reshape the earth’s surface. We will explore the transfer of heat (thermal energy) and how heat affects many phenomena on earth. We will also explore the solar system. This is an exciting curriculum that will give students the opportunity to study the science that happens both locally and globally. Board Adopted Text: McDougal Littell Science – Focus on Earth Sciences

SAI Science 6 Year Course Prerequisite Required All Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) for earth science are included along with the middle school earth science standards. This course follows the general education earth science curriculum with individual accommodations with whole class guided instruction, modeling, and guided practice. Science 7 Year Course Life science is the study of all living things – from the tiniest bacterium to the largest tree. This scientific knowledge is becoming essential for all of us to understand the new technologies, problems and discoveries that are occurring every day. We will learn about the cells that make up every living thing, moving to genetics and DNA, then how these influenced the evolution of life over the history of earth. Using that background, we will learn about ecosystems, the levels of organization and systems in plants, and then focus on the human body’s organ systems. We’ll then move on to our senses, in particular the ear and the eye (including, if budget permits, a dissection of a cow’s eye). We end the year studying FLASH – family life and sexual health and about the effect of drugs on teen brains and how to resist pressures to use them.

Digital Media (Grade 6) Year Course

Research has demonstrated that the definition of literacy has expanded beyond the printed word to include the digital and media “texts” that our students interact with on a daily basis. A Career Technical Education (CTE) course, Digital Media Language Arts is an engaging, hands-on course where students will not only develop the skills needed to analyze and evaluate multimedia messages, but create their own authentic media artifacts for a variety of purposes and audiences. Students will explore and create a variety of texts; including, but not limited to, digital (memes, digital posters, blogs, websites), video, and audio texts. Digital citizenship lessons will be interwoven throughout the course; covering such topics as creator’s rights (copyright, fair use, media remixes) and the “digital footprint” students leave behind through their online activity. Students will meet with industry experts and embark on fieldtrips. This course is connected to the high school pathways program at Pacifica, Oxnard, and Adolfo Camarillo High Schools.

Digital Publishing (Grades 7 and 8) Year Course Prerequisite Required – Teacher Recommendation Students in the Monte Vista Digital Publishing class are entirely responsible for the creation of the Monte Vista annual yearbook. This course involves book planning, basic graphic design including Adobe Photoshop (GIMP) and online formatting tool, photography, working with a budget and basic journalism principles. Digital Publishing is a teamwork-intensive project so students should be prepared to work closely with others. When not working on a yearbook project, students will be working on various projects using computers including but not limited to: learning about how computers work, adding and configuring software, graphic design, creating an online webpage, creating a school newspaper, creating flyers and forms to assist staff and PTSA, creating brochures, creating audio and video projects, learning advanced skills with various productivity applications, and more.

Directed Studies (Grades 6, 7, and 8) Year Course Prerequisite Required This course is an opportunity for students with Individualized Education Plans (IEP) to have extra assistance on finishing assignments and homework from their core academic classes, as well as work toward meeting individual IEP goals. The Directed Studies teacher will focus on small group instruction and individual attention as students work through core subject matter with their accommodations in place. Other topics covered include organization of materials and filling out school agendas properly. When needed, the teacher may act as a liaison between the student and their core academic teachers.

English Language Development (Grades 6, 7, and 8) Year Course Students identified as English Learners are taught additional language skills through designated and integrated English Language Development (ELD) standards. Field trips to California State University, Channel Islands and several community speaker presentations afford students the opportunities to see many career and college possibilities. Core curriculum is supported within the course by scaffolding of instruction and specific support appropriate to the student's language level.

Leadership (Grades 6, 7, and 8) Year Course Prerequisite Required – Teacher Recommendation The Associated Student Body (ASB) is an organization of student leaders who plan and coordinate school functions such as spirit assemblies, fundraisers, and academic achievement parties.
