INTRODUCTION

In the years 1963-1968 the late Hungarian coleopterist, Dr. Z . KASZAB, collected a large amount of insects in Mongolia, among them the about 620 specimens of Platygastridae treated in the present paper.

When species are so difficult to separate as in Platygastridae, it is always a problem on the basis of morphospecies to decide when to name species as new to science, to assign them to already known species, or as questionable. As most species are described from Western Europe, a fürther problem with regard to Mongolian species is that geographic variation comes into the picture. In the present work minor differences in colour, sculpture etc. w i l l not be regarded as sufficient to justify species rank, though very possibly there are biological differences between the widely separated populations of Europe and Mongolia. However, to prevent an inflation of new names only clearly differentiated morphological entities are named as new, and to give a fairly clear idea of the diversity as many species as possible are placed under already existing names (when the alternative would be no name), though often with a question mark and an explanation. However, it is impossible to give purely objective criteria for determinations, especially with regard to poorly

characterised, variable taxa with most often unknown bionomics such as platy-

gastrids.

A l l the already described species recorded below (or their very close relatives)

are well known from N W Europe, except Pyrgaspis haloxylonomyiae KOZLOV,

1967 and Anirama marikovskii (KOZLOV, 1967) described from Kazakhstan, and

Synopeas dentiscutellaris (SZABÓ, 1979) described from Mongolia. The platygastrid fauna of Mongolia was hitherto virtually unknown apart from the total of 11 species recorded by KOZLOV (1972,1974,1975a, 1975b) and SZABÓ (1979).

A l l material is deposited in the Department of Zoology, Hungarian Natural

History Museum, Budapest, Hungary.

Platygaster crenulata sp. n. (Figs 29-32)

Female - Length 1.4 mm. Black, antennae and legs hardly lighter, very dark brown. Head in dorsal view (Fig. 29) fully twice as wide as long, very slightly wider than mesosoma; occiput rather strongly and densely transversely striated; vertex finely and somewhat transversely reticulate-coriaceous; frons finely fan-like reticulate-coriaceous. Mesosoma 1.5 x as long as wide, 1.1 x as high as wide. Sides of pronotum finely longitudinally reticulate-coriaceous, smooth along rather narrow hind margin. Mesoscutum with few hairs, finely reticulate, almost smooth on lateral lobes and posteriorly on mid lobe, sculpture stongest in front of notauli, these missing in anterior 0.4; mid lobe slightly prolonged to base of scutellum, rather narrow here; scuto-scutellar grooves moderately hairy. Remarks - Differs from P. intermedia BUHL, 2004 and P. uniformis BUHL, 2004 in shape and sculpture of head and in sculpture of T1-T2, from P. eriphyie WALKER, 1835 in having notauli incomplete. P. crenulata is generally similar to P. gyrone SZELÉNYI, 1958 but has slightly less slender antennae, denser microtrichia on fore wings, and more striated T2 than this, cf. SZELÉNYI (1958). P. cre-

nulata is perhaps closest to P. misella BUHL, 2004. It is as dark as this species but larger and with slightly more slender antennae than misella, with wider metasoma, more unevenly sculptured T l and stronger striated T2, this last being a key character of P. crenulata.

Hind wing 5.0 x as long as wide; marginal cilia slightly more than 0.4 width of wing. Metasoma (Fig. 78) as long as head and mesosoma combined, slightly narrower than mesosoma, 1.0 (holotype) to 1.4 x as wide as high. Hind margin of T2, and T3-T6 entirely, with faint reticulate microsculpture, sometimes almost smooth; apical tergites with some fine hairs.

Material examined-Holotype female: Mongolia, Bajanchongor aimak, oasis Echin gol, 90 km NE of border post Caganbulag, 95Ó m, 27-28. V I . 1967. Paratypes: 2 females, same data as holotype.

Figs 72-78.72-74 = Synopeas mongoliens sp. n. female: 72 = head in dorsal view, 73 = antenna, 74 = metasoma in dorsal view. 75-78 = S. neglectus sp. n. female: 75 = head in dorsal view, 76 = antenna,

77 = scutellum in lateral view, 78 = metasoma in dorsal view

Remarks - The two paratypes have metasoma distinctly less convex than

holotype. S. neglectus is similar to S. neuroteri KlEFFER, 1916, but antenna somewhat differently shaped, cf. KlEFFER (1926, Fig. 274), especially A l of S. neglectus less curved (and darker). S. neglectus is close to S. mongolicus sp. n. but with

sculpture of frons more finely and uniformly reticulate, and more dull than in S. mongolicus which has sculpture stronger and exclusively transverse in lower 0.4; S. neglectus has also shorter, narrower and more convex metasoma and darker body appendages than in S. mongolicus, cf. above for further details.

as wide, hardly 1.1 x as high as wide. Sides of pronotum distinctly and slightly longitudinally reticulate-coriaceous all over. Mesoscutum evenly and moderately hairy, uniformly reticulate-coriaceous (slightly weaker than head), without trace of notauli; hind margin medially distinctly and broadly prolonged above anterior margin of scutellum, sometimes brownish here, laterally with dense, whitish hairs. Mesopleuron smooth, in upper 0.3 with faint longitudinal sculpture. Scutellum (Fig. 85) below level of mesoscutum, with sparse hairs (somewhat denser postero-laterally) and faint microsculpture, posteriorly with at most a weak indication of a tooth, slightly excavated below, dark, without lamella. Metapleuron smooth and bare in about anterior 0.4, rest with dense, whitish pilosity. Propodeal carinae very slightly semitransparent, almost fused. Suchebator aimak, river Baján gol, 85 km NE of Somon Dariganga, 1100 m, 8.VIII. 1965; 1 female, Midgobi aimak, Choot bulag, between Chuld and Delgerchangaj, 1480 m, 13.VII.1967; 1 male, Bajanchongor aimak, Cagan Bogd ul, Tooroin bulag 13 km E of border post Caganbulag, 1500 m, 24^1.1967^.

Remarks - Close to S. euryale (WALKER, 1835), but this species has female A5 not longer than A6, scutellum in lateral view less convex, propodeal carinae more convex, and it has female T3-T6 longer and T6 less transverse than S. vulgaris, cf. V L U G (1985). S. vulgaris differs from S. involulus KlEFFER, 1926 e.g. in sculpture of head, and from S. daucicola KlEFFER, 1916 in having A8-A9 transverse, and from both last mentioned species in length of OOL, cf. KlEFFER ( 1926).

Synopeas spp.

Remarks - A couple of species very similar to S. deniiscutellaris (SZABÓ,

1979), S. hyllus (WALKER, 1835) etc. were not placed, as well as a couple of species similar to S. vulgaris sp. n. Further material is needed to be more certain of their status.

Trichacis sp.

Material examined - 1 male, Central aimak, Ulan-Baator, Nucht in Bogdo ul, 1650-1950 m, 4.VI.1966.
