Living up to its reputation forhorrendous traffic conditionsduring peak times,Burgersfort’s central businessarea was a nightmare to drivein last week Wednesday, justafter the Easter weekend.Unbelievable, but true, adeptmotorists managed to fit in fivevehicles abreast in the twolanes stretching from the TwinCity shopping centre to theMorone shopping centre. Tomake things worse, somebodydecided that one of the busiestdays on the traffic calenderwas ideally suited for someroad works at the BurgersfortToyota crossing (bottomphotograph). A number ofprospective shoppers did nothave the stomach forBurgersfort and carriedstraight on to Lydenburg,especially for banking (we metthem there), and guess what,one of the banks temporarilymoved staff to Burgersfort tocope with the volume ofbusiness. Ouch!

Aquarius Platinum has announced that thecompany has entered into a binding Sale ofRights Agreement with Northam Platinumand its subsidiaries to acquire the platinumgroup metals (“PGM”) and associated basemetals mineral rights on farms adjacent toAquarius’s Everest Mine on the EasternLimb of the Bushveld Igneous Complex.

Aquarius Group companies will pay thesum of R1.2 billion at transaction close(approximately US$179 million) to theNortham Group subject to certainconditions. The acquisition cost will befunded both from Aquarius’ existing cashresources and from future cashflowgenerated by operations.

The mineral rights acquired compriseseveral farms underlain by both the UG2and Merensky reef horizons, collectivelycalled “Booysendal South” and containapproximately 31.1 million ounces of PGM(4E) resources (comprising 1.9 millionounces of measured, 7.5 million ounces

of indicated and 21.7 million ounces ofinferred PGM (4E) resources) aftergeological losses and will increaseAquarius’ current resource base byapproximately 24%.

Aquarius Platinum says The UG2 orebody at Booysendal South is contiguous

with Aquarius’ Everest Mine, and as a resultAquarius is uniquely placed to access thisreef horizon in the short to medium termfrom the existing Everest infrastructure.Adding Booysendal South to the Everestmine plan has the potential to extend the lifeof the Everest Mine from some 8 years to inexcess of 30 plus years, while alsopotentially enabling Aquarius to raise miningvolumes at Everest to make use of bothcurrent excess and potential expansioncapacity at the Everest processing plant.

Accessing the Booysendal South orebody from the existing Everest infrastructurewill also significantly reduce theenvironmental impact of mining theproperties relative to any greenfield projectplan sited on the properties.

Commenting on the acquisition, StuartMurray, CEO of Aquarius, inter alia said“This acquisition is important for Aquarius,as it enables us to significantly extend themine life and potentially expand theproduction of one of our important assets.Everest is our mine that empowerment builtutilising the proceeds of our 2003 BlackEconomic Empowerment transaction withthe Savannah Consortium and it is gratifyingto see this particular asset potentiallytransformed by this deal.”

Tubatse Ferrochrome recently held afeedback meeting with stakeholdersregarding their environmental issues.The purpose of the meeting was to updateand give new information on theRemediation Strategy Process, newdevelopments and to respond to anyconcerns or questions raised.The Water Treatment Plant is used for theremediation process. Tubatse hasabstracted and treated 98% of the requiredvolume of contaminated ground water for

2011 (year to date). The targeted 100% wasnot met as some of the monitored boreholeshave less water than initially anticipated.641 220 m3 of contaminated water has beenabstracted and treated since the projectcommenced in August 2009. Only 11 370 m3

was abstracted from the Steelpoort Riverduring 2011. This is about 9.3% of the totalpreviously abstracted. The Bio-monitoringreport for 2010 indicated that there is noevidence of negative impact on the habitatintegrity of the river.

They are continuously monitoring boreholesin the Steelpoort area. The ground water inthe Steelpoort area is inherently poor due tothe high salinity. Due to this the installationof reverse osmosis filters are recommendedfor domestic use. Tubatse noted that therewas no significant changes observed in thecontaminant plume and that they’ve revisedtheir Integrated Water Waste ManagementPlan according to the newest availableinformation. This document will be submittedto the Department of Water Affairs during

the course of the month.New projects on the table are the closure ofthe hazardous waste facility. This projecthas already commenced.Tubatse is also busy with EIAs for a new 70MVA furnace with 24 MVA energy recoveryplant, a 30 MVA waste heat, energyrecovery plant at the existing furnaces andthe upgrading of their furnaces.EIAs for the new slag site, the cappedfacility, the upgrade of the sewage plantsand the brine dams are also underway.

Cutting it down to (the right) sizeTubatse Chrome Golf Club this weekreceived their brand new John Deerelawnmowers.The one, a 8700 Fairway Mower is speciallydesigned for cutting of the fairways.Previously the fairway grass was cut with atractor and slasher. This meant that theheight could not be adjusted as needed andthat instead of cutting, the grass wasslashed.The other machine, a John Deere PrecisionCut will be used for semi-surround, semi-rough and T-boxes. The previous machinewas about 14 years old and still goingstrong, while the average operational age forthis type of equipment is approximately 6 - 8years.The Club’s management is very excitedabout the new mowers. “You will not believethe difference this is going to make to thecourse. We would like to thank TubatseFerrochrome for assisting in buying them.Without their help we would have been stillfar away from making the purchase” saidJohan Swanepoel. The machines cost morethat half a million rand and the Club havebeen raising funds over the past few yearsfor this specifically. They’ve been able to payover R70 000 towards this and thanked alltheir members and other players whosupported their fund raising efforts.They are inviting all golfers in the area tocome and experience the newly precision cutcourse. On Saturday it will be the OhrigstadLaerskool Golf Day. By the time of going topress the field was just about fully booked.
