BASIC DATA

• Goal: R&D in potential industrial applications of concentrating solar thermal energy and solar photochemistry.

• Location: Distributed over 103 hectares in the Tabernas Desert (Almería).

• Budget (2010-2012): Approximately 30 M€, of which 30% was new infrastructure. 50% came from own income.

• Human Resources: Approximately 130 persons. Auxiliary personnel represent 50%.

Most of the R+D activities are related to parabolic trough collectors, which is the CSP technology with the largest commercial deployment so far: 2387.5 MWe in operation in March of 2013 in USA (415 MWe) and Spain (1972.5 MWe).

This technology concerns medium-temperature applications: 125º< T < 450ºC

Objective: Develop innovative components for solar fields and competitive technologies for using solar energy in the mid-temperature range (125ºC-450ºC)

LECE (Energy Testing of Building Components) consists of 4 16-m3 thermally insulated test cells with one wall prepared for testing architectural components.

These tests allow component thermal losses and some optical properties as transmissivity of light, etc., to be evaluated.

This laboratory has been quality-certified by ENAC
