    Planning an Expedition

Your Task is to produce a document that will enable you to take part in a2 day expedition around the local countryside including an overnight

    stay in a local campsite.

You must plan every aspect of the trip from food and tent down to usinga map and compass correctly

    1. Location Where will you be actually walking from staying and thenwalking back to?

Give the 6 figure grid reference for the following places?

Start = Bath Community Academy (BCA) (729,628)

Camp = Bury View Farm Campsite (671,644)

Finish = Bath Community Academy (BCA) (729, 628)

    2. Describe the type of terrain you will be working over based on lookingfor evidence on the OS Map. Describe the hills, valleys, rivers, streams,

hedges and fences, roads, field and paths that you will follow?

We will be following concrete roads for most of the journey and some

rocky footpaths; this should lean in our favour and use this as an

advantage with time. Also, there will be some minor hills that we will

face but this shouldnt be a problem to walk up and down. As we

proceed along our journey in the countryside we will be surrounded by

various hedges and bushes to the side of us, this should be fine unless

we come across broken branches etc, that we may have to move in caseof any danger.

will the campsite cost, what facilities it has, are their any rules

regarding use of the campsite that need to be followed. How will the

campsite be paid for, is there a last entry time for the campsite, or a

    lights out time?

Bury View Farm Campsitehave really good facilities, they offer a

    8. A first aid kit will be carried by the teacher supervising the expeditioncan you write down what should be included in the first aid kit for the

expedition. Also explain why a first aid kit is needed?

We will take a small First Aid kit in need of an emergency. The kit is

needed to aid somebody who is injured so this is vital that we have this

kit.The First Aid kit will have: Plasters, Various Bandages. Antiseptic

Cream, Antiseptic Wipes, Gloves, and Scissors.

    9. In the event of an emergency can you explain what you would do. Atip would be to look on the St Johns Ambulance website for first aid

advice. After administering first aid what would you do? Who would

you need to inform? In the event of an emergency you will need to react appropriately, if

someone has tripped and had a bump, to someone getting a larger

injury you will immediately need to administer First Aid and inform the

expedition leader as the injured person may not be able to carry on.

10.To carry out the expedition you will need a large amount ofequipment. Make a list of the equipment you need to take. You could

if you found it easier divide the equipment up into the following

    categories.

11.Use the Natural England website to find and write down the mainpoints of the Countryside code.

Enjoy, respect, protect the countryside with the refreshed Countryside Code

    Enjoy the outdoors

Even when going out locally, its best to get the latest information about

where and when you can go. For example, access to some areas of open

access land and coastal land may be restricted in particular places at

particular times. Find out as much as you can about where you are

going, plan ahead and follow advice and local signs.

    Protect the natural environment

We all have a responsibility to protect the countryside now and for

future generations, so make sure you dont harm animals, birds, plants

or trees and take home everything you brought with you. When out with

your dog make sure it is under effective control, and does not disturb

farm animals, horses, wildlife or other people.

Respect other peopleConsider the local community and other people enjoying the outdoors.

Remember that the countryside is a working environment and even

small actions can lead to big disruption. Leave gates as you find them

and take extra care to avoid the risk of starting wildfires.
