Which Design I will use

• I have decided to use the ‘Mid-Close up design’. This is based on my research into front covers. Most of the front covers I researched used a medium close up as their main photo on the cover and therefore using this convention will make my magazine more professional looking.

Which Design shall I use?

• I have decided to use the first layout of the contents page. This is based on ‘The Source’ contents page which effectively had two big photo’s (or perhaps I could use one big photo) with a relatively small amount of text. This will make my magazine appear more professional because it will be based on a real magazine. H

Which Design shall I use?

• I have decided to use the first design for my Double Page Spread. This is because I feel that it is an easier design for me to replicate whilst based on my research. Most of the pages I researched had a photo one side and text the other so this design will make my magazine appear more professional.

Masthead

I have elected to use this masthead font. The font is ‘Arahoni’. I like it because the shape of the letters is blocky and bold which is perfect to the audience. It also

stands out amongst the other fonts meaning it should stand out in a shop making it more likely to sell.

Page 18: Planning

Mode of Address• My target audience for this are fans of hip/hop, rap, r’n’b etc. This means

that it should be informal so it relates to them better. My main age group is 15-24 who mostly speak informally to each other thus emphasising the need to use informal language.

• Magazines however don’t use words like ‘lol’ or ‘obs’ or ‘wtf’ in the text, so to make sure my magazine is more professional it should use full English words but maintaining the informal tone.

• The actual tone should be an ‘in your face’ ‘intimidating the audience’ tone because the magazines that I researched tried to intimidate the readers into reading and buying, also it’s something commonly associated with the genre of music my magazine will be covering.

Page 19: Planning

Colour Scheme

• From my research I deduced that white, black and red are the main colours of text on a front cover. For this reason my front cover will use these three colours to make it appear more professional.

• The background of the pages in a magazine, as shown by my research, is white with black text as they both look professional and clearly stand out from each other, so inside the magazine my pages will be white with black text.

• Red goes with black and white professionally (as shown by my research) so if any other colour is needed in the text, red would be the best to use.

Page 20: Planning

Fonts

• Most of the cover pages I researched used bold fonts such as this and for that reason, my font on the cover will be ‘Arial black rounded’ as it stands out and looks like a cover font.

• Inside the contents page and double page spread a font like ‘Times New Roman’ was used because it is clear to read. For this reason my contents and double page spreads will use the font ‘Times New Roman’ for ease of reading.

Page 21: Planning

Articles to use in the contents pages• My research told me to include chart coverage. One of my articles could be about

the top 20 R’n’B, Rap, Hip Hop and Pop songs currently in the chart.• Another article could be reviewing the number one songs from the above charts.• Another article could review the latest album from artists in the genres the

magazine covers. My research showed that my audience wanted reviews on albums so this helps me meet audience criteria.

• Another article could be on upcoming gigs based around the genres that the magazine covers.

• Another article could interview an artist. • Another article could be a photo-style article about a recent gig or event from an

artist in the genres the magazine covers.• Another article could interview a band.• Another article could be on upcoming singles and releases.• Another article could be on upcoming/less known artists trying to get them a

helping start in the music industry

Costume and props- cover

• No props required. To give a tough girl look she has agreed to wear a grey jacket, zipped up. This will help emphasise an intimidating look. Because it is only medium shot, her legs won’t be in the pictures and therefore they are not important, however, jeans would be appropriate to continue a tough look.

Page 28: Planning

Costume and props- contents

• No props required. A leather jacket, perhaps some fur around the neck and jeans would be best again to emphasise a tough look to intimidate the audience. Quite a few teenagers wear jeans so this is an effective way of attracting that particular target market.

Reasoning

• The reason there is a range of personas and a mix of ideas in the storyboards is so that when it comes to producing the magazines I have a lot of different pictures to chose from and can therefore convey different personas easily and am not constricted to the one personality. This also gives me a lot of leverage with the articles as I am not constricted to the one personality.

• My contents page only has long shots as in my research it was mainly long shots.

Page 34: Planning

Organisation of Location- Cover

• I feel a wall would be a simple as it is not constricting and could help add to the “tough” look which is common in these types of photographs. And since I can use my own wall permission would not be required and would therefore be simple enough to use.

• This will be carried on into the contents page to make the contents a continuation of the cover making the audience feel more comfortable with the magazine.

PRODUCTION?ADDITIONAL COMMENTS

Look around the location. Yes It will add to and help create an intimidating look and will relate to the audience.

Talk to people there, organise filming permissions. Not required. I own the wall. Identify the equipment you need to use. Camera I own a camera Examine and identify any potential health and safety issues(Both people and equipment related issues e.g. crowd numbers being controlled; using safe cabling practices and video equipment being set up in a sensible location that does not block access points or that damages the environment or frightens livestock)

No health and safety issues as no cables are used, it’s just a compact camera with nothing else.

Check the position of the sun and lighting conditions. The wall blocks the sun. Flash may be required. Look for interesting shots and camera angles. Close ups-medium shots would

work best so it’s just the wall as a backdrop.

Check the electricity supply. (For the majority of exterior locations you will be using battery power)

No electricity supply required.

Do a test sound/video recording and check for potential noise problems (traffic noise may be a problem; is a location on a main flight path to an airport?)

Sound and video will not be recorded.

Confirm times and dates with technical crew/actors or anybody you are interviewing, etc.

Sunday at 2 PM/3 PM

Arrange car parking, access, loading, security, where possible.

Not required. My subjects live on the same street as me so they can walk to the wall easily.

Make sure everybody concerned with your video production knows what is happening and what is expected of them when on location.

Been arranged through text.

Organisation of Location- Double Page Spread

• For my double page spread shoot I have booked photography studio 2, 14:15-15:15, Thursday 23rd February to take photographs of my model for my double page spread.

• This location is appropriate because it is a professional studio with all the equipment I need and will allow me to take more professional looking photo’s and also allows me to experiment and try new things with the lighting.

Look around the location. Yes It is a professional Photography Studio Talk to people there, organise filming permissions. The studio has been booked for the time

agreed with the model.

Identify the equipment you need to use. Camera, Flash Examine and identify any potential health and safety issues(Both people and equipment related issues e.g. crowd numbers being controlled; using safe cabling practices and video equipment being set up in a sensible location that does not block access points or that damages the environment or frightens livestock)

The cables will be covered, the model will not be allowed near the light bulbs for her own safety and the floor will be cleared so that she doesn’t fall over anything.

Check the position of the sun and lighting conditions. Lighting conditions can be manipulated by me as it’s artificial.

Look for interesting shots and camera angles. Because it is a studio a lot of different photographs could be taken from different positions, one thing I would like to experiment with is a low angle shot of the model.

Check the electricity supply. (For the majority of exterior locations you will be using battery power)

Batteries will be charged the day before.

Do a test sound/video recording and check for potential noise problems (traffic noise may be a problem; is a location on a main flight path to an airport?)

No video or sound will be recorded.

Confirm times and dates with technical crew/actors or anybody you are interviewing, etc.

Thursday 23rd February 2:15-15:15PM

Arrange car parking, access, loading, security, where possible. Not required, done at college.

Make sure everybody concerned with your video production knows what is happening and what is expected of them when on location.

This has been done by allowing my model to see the idea storyboard I have for shots of her.

Double Page Spread

• I have elected to make my double page spread based on an interview with an artist. One of the magazines I researched had an interview as their double page spread so therefore this would be good for mine.

• There will be seven questions I ask for my double page spread: (see next slide).

Page 40: Planning

Questions1. What influenced you to start making music?2. Do you see yourself expanding into different genres in the

future.3. Your recent single ‘Wrong Love’ was an instant hit. Was this

a reaction you were expecting?4. Any news or developments on future songs?5. Did you struggle writing the lyrics for the song?6. Have you considered an album?7. Which artists inspire you to make music

I will also ask any questions that occur during the interview. The interview will start after the photo-shoot in the Canteen.
